Not if he doesn't get some instant confidence. That next to last play before he left for the bench for the night, the one where he was all by himself at the basket - but wheeled around and flubbed a pass off was just a low point. You get a break in that situation, drive it into the basket. Don't stand around waiting for helpers. And that was just one of several really head scratching plays and sequences he was involved in tonight. Really looked just lost out there, but he always has looked like that. Whatever improvement he's made since the end of last season must be somewhere we can't see it right now - or he simply hasn't made any. B.MILLER SDUT did a write up on Heide two days ago: “It’s been a big thing for me to constantly get shots up and try to expand the court,” Heide said. “I’m shooting in practice with confidence.” There’s that word. Confidence. That might be the single biggest factor in unlocking Heide’s game at the college level. Coleman-Jones, Gwath and Compton are averaging more minutes early, but he has done things that were noticed. Heide finished with five rebounds during an exhibition against Cal State San Marcos and piled up eight boards, six on the offensive end, in Tuesday’s win over Occidental. Add in the moment against UCLA and there are breadcrumbs. Heide also has learned from the Aztecs who played before him, with the bruises to show for it. He faced LeDee in practice, picking up lessons on each collision with the Karl Malone Award winner as the nation’s top power forward. Just because Bryce Miller wrote a feel good piece about confidence doesn't mean it's there. Watching Heide on the court tonight would likely dispel any roomers about confidence. He may be shooting in practice with confidence, but that confidence hasn't shown up in a game - yet. Time, as always, will tell.

Byrd despite a poor offensive night showed his hidden value with five boards and three assists
BJ and Boyd are the real deal.
Don't rush Waters back. Please.
JCJ needs to put his body on the other teams best rebounder. Let somebody else clean up.
Compton plays big for 6'8". Heide and Goon need only play in garbage time. Schaeffer on the post game days Heide has been battling tendinitis
I like this team. We need to get better up front. Eight days to heal and practice.

I like our group.....
Boyd and Davis are a formidable tandem at guard and are active defensively....
Bigs are finding their way vs. elite competition.....Please tell the bigs every time they take and miss a 3, we have one less potential rebounder...
The only player to me that looks discombobulated is Heide...Looks robotic...Hopefully, he gets out of his own head and improves....
Nick and BJ were every bit as good as Gonzaga's guards.....

Just got back from the game: Heide is literally unplayable. His hands make Angelo Chol's look like John Stockton's. Every time he got the ball he immediately tried to pass it to someone. His screens are terrible and I can't figure out why he can get offensive rebounds but not defensive. And when he does get an offensive rebound he's terrible on put-backs. Really a disappointment, especially given his family history at the 5.
McKinney can shoot but he's worse than Trammell on defense. He's short without Trammel's ability to steal the ball. He took the most shots of any one, 12. They got him in bad switches time and time again. Taj actually moved him over to a smaller guy at least twice that I saw when he noticed the size disparity.
I think Taj will be an all-time Aztec if he stays here long enough. He has great size, can shoot but always looks for the open man, and is already really good on defense.
Pharaoh is like a big, strong puppy: wild and full of energy but kind of all over the place. I really hope it was just cramps but it looked more like a knee or hip. Hope I'm wrong.
BJ and Boyd will have some 25 pt nights this year. They're both really good with the ball, shooting and taking it to the rim. I'm excited to watch them this year.
JCJ needs to go to the rack more. He's fluid in the key but likes the 3 too much.(1-5) He only got 1(!!!) rebound in 30 minutes or as Smokey Gaines used to say, "that's one more than a dead man".
If McGoon can't hit his 3s, he's not going to contribute much offensively. He's just too weak for now. His blocks are great but he tries to block every shot which is why he fouls so much.
Byrd was being guarded closer than anyone else. He took four 3s but only one of them was open much. I hope it was his ankle but I don't think so. He went back to flashy-pass Byrd a couple times and had 3 TOs because of it.
I worry that 7'1" Kalkbrenner from Creighton may drop 50 on us inside the key. He's 3rd in D1 with 26.8 ppg, 3rd in FG% at 89.1% (41-46) and 90% FT(18-20).

Goon had 5 blocks in 14 minutes, he just needs to play at PF instead of center against big centers. After watching that game, it makes me wonder how good Majak is. Can't be worse then Heide right?

Aztecs played hard and held them to 80 points.I was hoping they would beat the spread. Gonz is in a different class right now. Grown men against boys. I think there were several times when the Aztecs had 3 freshmen and a sophmore on the court against a mt west player of the year, and most valuables from other teams who transferred to Gonz. I heard one fan say, "we have length this year, but their players are 3 inches taller." Coaching was better, but with that skill set, it should have been better. One major problem I see for the Aztecs right now is they need a center that can score, at least once in awhile. #0 got exactly that---zero points. Nice blocks but he needs to get some points to go with his D. Heide, one point. Like Smokey said that's one more point than a dead man.Time to put it together, big fella. Now lets hope the Aztecs can grow from this game and make a big step forward in the next couple of weeks. They are better than #4 in the MW.

He will be inconsistent all year until he understands that a simple and boring pass is greater than a spectacular pass. BJ Davis the last 3 games has brought it. Tonight he was being guarded by the best player on the floor and went toe to toe with him. Our backcourt kept us in the game if not we would have been blown out. We just didnt have an answer for IKE.

What happened to all the talk about practice hype for Magoon (Zeigler even bought it)? He is a good defensive presence but can’t contribute meaningfully on offense given how weak he is.

Gonzaga’s elite talented big men were too much for all of SDSU’s front court players. Heide will have his moments vs. less talented post players. He didn’t improve at all from last season. He even looks a little worse so far, maybe that’s just cause he’s on the floor more so he makes more mistakes.

Zeigler is full of it. I figured if he was that good he would have played last year. He falls in love with practice players. It took me a while to figure out coaching High School basketball that some players practice well and when the lights go on they shy away. Others practice poorly and then when game time comes around they look better. Allen Iverson had it right, "we taking about practice."

He's a RS freshmen playing in his first big college game, and he still had 5 blocks - just missed some shots. He just has to adjust his play, it's really not a big deal compared to how bad Heide played.

Gonzaga would have only won by a handful of points had that game been ref'd evenly. They were definitely better, but not that much better.

What world do you live in whereby you believe everything you read...... The kid has played 3 collegiate games and as Zeigler, and others have pointed out, has enormous POTENTIAL! Hopefully, he stays healthy, continues to develop and chooses to remain an Aztec for the foreseable future!

Zags were called for 21 fouls and SDSU was called for 22 fouls. It is clear that the officiating favored Gonzaga. That 1 extra foul called on the Aztecs made all the difference in the world.

He has a chance to set the all-time block record at SDSU. He also has a legitimate shot at playing in the NBA. Of course, he's going to have to eat his Wheaties along with perhaps some certain chemical additives so he can pack on another 30-40 lbs. of muscle. He's definitely a project and is going to require another year or two until he starts hitting his stride. But for now, he's like a big, floppy labrador puppy with a huge wagging tail running amok in a China shop. He has no business going mano-a-mano with the likes of grown men like Ike. And his offense inside the paint is awful -- he even blew a putback slam last night. He should only be on the floor when paired with a big body like Compton. Asking the Goon to try to hold down the fort by himself is like asking Custer to keep the Indians at bay on a certain Montana hilltop.

Feel more encouraged about the long term with this team than I did to start the season:
Good news: -we’ve got really good guard depth. Boyd is a top PG in the nation (I did feel like he could have hit the roll guy more on Zaga’s hedges). BJ Davis is a revelation and his scoring ability is the real deal. Only going to get better with Reese back and hopefully Byrd can get back to practicing. -Our freshmen largely don’t play like freshmen. Taj and Pharaoh can play with anyone, not many freshmen in the nation being relied on for heavy mins. They didn’t look scared at all out there.
Bad News: -I was concerned about big man depth, now very concerned. Starts with JCJ who has the most experience. He doesn’t look comfortable yet and isn’t helping on the boards. Gwath showed he still has a lot to learn and he’s going to be a project. I want to give Heide some grace because I think he had an injury preseason but he looks the exact same as last season at this point. Compton did alright before the cramps, he’s got to be in better positions to rebound since he is undersized. When we had Heide and Demarshay out at the same time the offense was tough to watch. Btw please say something nice about Demarshay, he gave solid, serviceable mins yesterday and this boards killed him for years. -we might be in for more tough games next week unless we can get everyone healthy and practicing ASAP.
I do think we’ll be a completely different team come February/March. Biggest question is can we put together enough early to make it to March.
