Awesome point. Zags were called for 21 fouls and SDSU was called for 22 fouls. It is clear that the officiating favored Gonzaga. That 1 extra foul called on the Aztecs made all the difference in the world. They didn't call shooting fouls in our favor all night, so many times where we attacked the rim and drew a block with no call. That's not the way I viewed it..... I thought we benefitted from ticky tack calls early, but just couldn't score and ride the momentum from those opportunities.... Other than some of our bigs settling for 3's, I thought the flow and movement of our offense was encouraging..... I'm especially encouraged with our " don't quit " defensive will..... If this team stays engaged, continues working and improves it's health, we could be a nightmare matchup come March!

The game went about how I was expecting. Gonzaga is an experienced, final four caliber team, that returned a ton of experience and brought in some big time transfers. The fact that we were able to keep it respectable, even with the foul trouble and injuries (missing Waters and then Byrd for much of the game) was very encouraging.
- Boyd: Looks like the real deal. He is a true floor general and you can tell that Dutcher wants the ball in his hands as much as possible. I have been impressed with his finishing ability around the rim. - BJ Davis: Love his on ball defense and scoring ability. I can see him being our top scorer in a lot of games this year. - Byrd: I know he tried playing hurt, so I will give him a pass for this game. - Gwath: When it is all said and done, he might be the best shot blocker we have seen at SDSU. You really can't take away his aggressiveness and tell him not to block shots. That is something he will learn with more experience. On the offensive end, he looked sped up at times and missed shots. As the coaches have said, he is still a freshman, so we will definitely see the ups and downs early in the season. - JCJ: I have to say that I have been pretty disappointed with him to start the season. I think he is still adjusting to a new team and a much higher level of competition. - McKinney: He had his moments last night. I think he is going to be a solid guard off the bench for us this year that will win us a game or two with his scoring. I do think that he struggled some last night with the length of Gonzaga inside. - Degourville/Compton: I know Compton was taken out by some cramps, but I was very impressed with both freshman. Excited to see their growth throughout the year. - Heide: Like many others have said, he has looked like he has regressed from last year. We are only a few games in, so hoping to see him settle in and provide solid rebounding and defense. I am assuming the coaches gave him the green light to shoot wide-open 3's, but I am not sure that is the shot we want.
How fast our freshmen come along, paired with the health of Waters, will determine how much damage we can do this year. Watch out for us come March!
On a side note: I have seen a few complain about officiating. I thought it was a very fairly officiated game and didn't have many complaints.

What happened to all the talk about practice hype for Magoon (Zeigler even bought it)? He is a good defensive presence but can’t contribute meaningfully on offense given how weak he is. What world do you live in whereby you believe everything you read...... The kid has played 3 collegiate games and as Zeigler, and others have pointed out, has enormous POTENTIAL! Hopefully, he stays healthy, continues to develop and chooses to remain an Aztec for the foreseable future! He is the Aztec beat writer and he does attend the practices and talk to the coaches. I would certainly hope he would have a good read on the quality of the players.

Zeigler is full of it. I figured if he was that good he would have played last year. He falls in love with practice players. It took me a while to figure out coaching High School basketball that some players practice well and when the lights go on they shy away. Others practice poorly and then when game time comes around they look better. Allen Iverson had it right, "we taking about practice." Magoon is an absolute terror as a rim protector. He has a chance to set the all-time block record at SDSU. He also has a legitimate shot at playing in the NBA. Of course, he's going to have to eat his Wheaties along with perhaps some certain chemical additives so he can pack on another 30-40 lbs. of muscle. He's definitely a project and is going to require another year or two until he starts hitting his stride. But for now, he's like a big, floppy labrador puppy with a huge wagging tail running amok in a China shop. He has no business going mano-a-mano with the likes of grown men like Ike. And his offense inside the paint is awful -- he even blew a putback slam last night. He should only be on the floor when paired with a big body like Compton. Asking the Goon to try to hold down the fort by himself is like asking Custer to keep the Indians at bay on a certain Montana hilltop. He isn’t adding 30-40 pounds of muscle. That’s also considering that he already added about 25 lbs from when he joined the team. To add 30-40 lbs of actual muscle (not fat) he would either need to switch his focus from basketball to weight lifting or take steroids.

I too thought the game was officiated well at least in the first half, we just couldn’t get to the line jacking up stupid 3 pointers by people who shouldn’t be shooting them. I hope Byrds back is not serious I’m sure the ankle injury led to that! I heard waters had a update scheduled this week has anyone heard anything I’m hoping he’s cleared for practice in 2 weeks the announcer said he’s out 8 more scary hoping he’s wrong!

Dude have you read or listen to anything he said? He said he has potential as shown it in practice. He literally said it on radio a ton of times. He going to have growing pains he has played games in a long time and is going to be rusty and not in game shape. He literally told people to pump the brakes on this year.

No with his body type. He is like a Jalen McDaniels. To all the people here and aztecbreakdown. All I heard last year and the beginning of this year. Gwath can play the 5. Not he is not a center and never should be one. He a 4 that can likely play the 3.

Feel more encouraged about the long term with this team than I did to start the season: Good news: -we’ve got really good guard depth. Boyd is a top PG in the nation (I did feel like he could have hit the roll guy more on Zaga’s hedges). BJ Davis is a revelation and his scoring ability is the real deal. Only going to get better with Reese back and hopefully Byrd can get back to practicing. -Our freshmen largely don’t play like freshmen. Taj and Pharaoh can play with anyone, not many freshmen in the nation being relied on for heavy mins. They didn’t look scared at all out there. Bad News: -I was concerned about big man depth, now very concerned. Starts with JCJ who has the most experience. He doesn’t look comfortable yet and isn’t helping on the boards. Gwath showed he still has a lot to learn and he’s going to be a project. I want to give Heide some grace because I think he had an injury preseason but he looks the exact same as last season at this point. Compton did alright before the cramps, he’s got to be in better positions to rebound since he is undersized. When we had Heide and Demarshay out at the same time the offense was tough to watch. Btw please say something nice about Demarshay, he gave solid, serviceable mins yesterday and this boards killed him for years. -we might be in for more tough games next week unless we can get everyone healthy and practicing ASAP. I do think we’ll be a completely different team come February/March. Biggest question is can we put together enough early to make it to March. Unfortunately due to our health we most likely won't have enough OOC signature wins to get an at-large. The good news is Dutch has a proven track record of having the team in prime form for the MWCT and I fully believe if everyone's healthy we'll win it and go dancing once again.

I think against Nembhard, you just have to have your big go under every high ball screen. Force Nembhard to pull up for three's and long 2's.
Ike will torch you on the 1 5 switches, or Nembhard will drive and kick and get a million assists. Nembhard was 1-5 from 3 point range.

The people saying Magoon shouldn't be on the floor, or only get garbage time minutes, are really exposing themselves. Yes, he is a defensive player only at this point in his career. Guess what? The Aztecs are a team that wins championships by playing defense. Five (5!) blocks against one of the premier offenses in the country and some people want to bench him for... who? Exactly. Gwath is the most important player on this year's team, and he doesn't have to be an offensive threat or elite rebounder to reach the level the team needs to be successful. He just has to stay on the floor, occupy the paint, deter drives to the basket and grab a few more rebounds.
And as the cherry on top his potential is unlimited once he settles into his 7'0 body.

I've seen enough to believe we have a good chance to win the conference tournament. But, even if we don't, I think we'll do well enough that, with our NCAA tournament success, we might get an at large bid anyway. Probably not a great seed in that case, but still in the Tournament. (This was very hard to type with my fingers crossed.)

I'm concerned about the big men, too, but I'm not sure it's fair to judge them against Gonzaga. Next week will be more telling.

He isn’t adding 30-40 pounds of muscle. That’s also considering that he already added about 25 lbs from when he joined the team. To add 30-40 lbs of actual muscle (not fat) he would either need to switch his focus from basketball to weight lifting or take steroids. Uh, if you don't think 80%+ of the NBA/NFL/MLB isn't achieving better living and contracts through chemistry, you're living on another planet.

Uh, if you don't think 80%+ of the NBA/NFL/MLB isn't achieving better living and contracts through chemistry, you're living on another planet. Two things. First, his frame won’t easily put on that much muscle. Second, maybe you’ve never lifted weights but 30-40 lbs of muscle (on top of a guy who has already gained 25 lbs) is a huge amount of muscle gain. It’s something that takes multiple years of strong focus. That isn’t something he would achieve unless he backed off of basketball and primarily focused on the weight room, which isn’t going to happen. He started here at 180, he’s now listed at 205. I think 225 is the max he would ever get to in college, but that isn’t going to be straight muscle gain obviously.

I'm concerned about the big men, too, but I'm not sure it's fair to judge them against Gonzaga. Next week will be more telling. Gongaza beat Baylor by 38 and Baylor is still ranked 13/14 in the polls. That shows a huge amount of respect for Gonzaga. Considering how early in the season and how young and experienced so much of our roster is, I think we showed well last night against a monster of a team.

I didn't read the whole thread, but people are crazy if that's what they're really saying. It's not like Heide, JCJ, or Demarshay are doing much better on offense. Compton is one forward who is gonna earn some more minutes for sure, but I think he'll play more as a 4.

Uh, if you don't think 80%+ of the NBA/NFL/MLB isn't achieving better living and contracts through chemistry, you're living on another planet. Chemistry isn't all banned though. Creatine + Branched Chain Amino Acids help a ton with muscle growth. Melatonin at night increases endogenous HGH levels, and MSM increases soft tissue healing - both of which allow for more frequent exercise, and quicker injury recovery. So you're right that chemistry is important, but there are a lot of college athletes doing it 100% clean. In fact, looking at Byrd and Compton's cramps makes me wonder if they are on creatine (Compton most likely, Byrd probably just a cramp from not exercising due to injury). They need to be taking a daily magnesium supplement, eat bananas, and have water with electrolytes throughout the day.

Man, if only this game were played a month from now, we'd have such a different result. Very strange game... neither team played particularly well. Felt like all of the fouls and injuries disrupted the flow of the game and kept the crowd out of it. Unfortunately this was too big of a stage too soon for this team. Biggest takeaway is that Nick Boyd stepped up BIG time. BJ also continuing to prove that he's the real deal. Getting Reese back is going to be huge. I like this team a lot and will love it even more in March.

Kalkbrenner, Creighton's 7' 1" center, is going to be a challenge next game. He put up 49 points in a game recently. I think you have to keep him in front of you, don't have the big help much on ball screens. You can have a wing player help defend the point guard while our guard gets around the screen.
This schedule is murder's row right now, especially for our team that's lacking a talented big. We would be fine with LeDee or Mensah, but Kalkbrenner is going to be a nightmare with our current centers.
We need to be practicing pick and rolls non stop - we are bad at them on both sides of the ball.

I think you have to give both teams credit. Viejas is no easy road game. And, although I had hoped we could keep the point differential to under 10, I am ok with 13 under the circumstances...banged up Byrd and no Waters. Gonzaga played defense all night like they were SDSU, and their guys were just longer and got to their defensive spots very quickly. But, the vaunted SDSU defense did their usual solid job. The Zags are just a very talented team.
