I'm hoping this is not the "real" Heide I'm seeing the first few games of the season. I think he would be fine, but man... Heide was decent on the boards, and standing tall. He still doesn't have much touch around the rim, and shoot bricks from three and is still less than 50% from the FT, he needs to learn is role, focus on what he does best, and not to jack up threes with 18 seconds on the clock, no matter how open he is. STATS - 2024 Games: 3 Minutes: 13.7 FG%: 33% (3-9) 3FG%: 0% (0-5) FT%: 20% (1-5) Reb: 4.7 Ast: 0.7 Blk: 0.3 Stl: 0.0 TO: 1.0 PF: 1.7 PPG: 2.3

But season has just begun. Heidi looked uncharacteristically out of sync, struggling to find his rhythm on both ends of the court, appeared tentative and intimidated, particularly when facing physical challenges in the paint against Ike. Decision-making was slow, leading to missed shots and turnovers. A performance like this highlights the importance of confidence and assertiveness, especially for a key big (#5)tasked with anchoring the paint.

Gonzaga wins tonight, 5-0 this year. Lets look at their 5 scorers so far:
vs. Baylor (won, 1-0) 101 to 63, +38 points vs. Arizona State (won, 2-0) 88 to 80, +8 points vs. UMass Lowell (won, 3-0) 113 to 54, +59 points vs. SDSU (won, 4-0) 80 to 67, +13 points vs. CSULB (won, 5-0) 84 to 41, +43 points
Despite injuries with Waters, Byrd & Compton + Goon fouling out, we defended better than others, but shot poorly.

The Zags are damned good period I watched the Marquette -Purdue game Tuesday night, SDSU is two steps below that level of play. Not saying it as a put down, but to describe where this squad is currently at. The primary difference being State is young and inexperienced. Our front line needs to focus on rebounding more than anything else.

RE: HEIDE
He has been the same nervous guy in all 4 games this year. He appeared uncomfortable vs CSUSM, UCSD, and Occidental which should not be the case. I suspect it's because he hits threes in practice so the coaches position him for that but then becomes a shell of himself in games.
On the positive he did a fantastic job on the offensive rebound side. I recall him having quick hands last season, not fumbling the ball away. The reality that this is a problem this season just is a confidence thing as I see it. He needs to calm down, think like he owns the arena. Instead of a "know" perspective he appears to walk in with a "hope" perspective. Needs to play angry.
RE: GONZAGA GAME
#3 Zags 100% healthy, mostly seniors, and deep with revenge mindset - especially Nembhard and Ike. SDSU: No Waters, Bird at 75% and out 2nd half, Goon fouled out, Pharaoh cramping, and JCJ & Heide nervous.
Our guard play was elite and kept this from a blowout. Our freshmen performed beyond expectations and I think they learned a lot from this game. BJ Davis, Boyd and McKinney is formidable on any given night. Just think how much better we'll be with a healthy Byrd and Waters! I left the arena feeling highly optimistic.
GOING FORWARD
I want to see Compton starting. Totally different offense with him in the game. We need someone who can bang inside and JCJ is more of a stretch-4 finesse. I want to see a few more post-ups by Goon. He looked good on his one missed hook. Soft touch just nervous. I want Boyd to attack the rim more often.

He just doesn't look right out there right now. The biggest concern was when he ended up with the ball on a fast break for a 1 on 1 against Ryan Nembhard. He's got 60 pounds and 11 inches on Nembhard, so all he'd have to do is dribble to the rack for what should be an easy layup or a foul. Instead, he picked up his dribble at the 3 point line effectively stopping the fast break attempt. He was already having a bad game, but that play showed that he had lost all confidence in himself.

Yes, it seems as though he's not comfortable creating so he didn't want to fumble his dribble, get picked by Nembhard, or get called for charging. He's more comfortable laying low in the post because that will hide his insecurities. I hope he gets better as the season progresses, because we need him.

Maybe a four guard line up like Villanova did a while back (Bryd, Reese, Boyd, and BJ?). Didn't they win a National title like that? Not a bad thought. I think you need a big who is a beast and dominant as the one big... maybe like a Mensah or Skylar I think we'd be really vulnerable on the boards if we tried with this squad

I could actually see us doing the opposite of that for short stretches this year. Something like Boyd, Taj/Waters when he's back, Byrd, Gwath, Compton would be a really good group that could switch and have a lot of length for help defense. That could be 5 guys that I could see us going to if we really needed to get a stop on a key possession.

JCJ needs to show he’s a legitimate three-point threat—haven’t seen it yet. On the other hand, Compton has an incredibly high ceiling, and so does Taj. This freshman class is packed with talent! (Goon too.)
