Our football program will NEVER be what the basketball program has been. Yet Boise has been. Looks like they might be again. You can make a strong argument they've been better than our basketball program. Given that football is substantially more important than basketball, they've really outpaced Aztec hoops. Yet, you say we will "NEVER" that good. That's typical Aztec fan mentality. You may be correct that we never will, but it doesn't mean that we never COULD. Just keep hiring mediocre coaches and that'll definitely be the case. I understand that you’re trying to make a point about there being no reason why SDSU can’t be a great football program, which I agree with. However, saying the Boise St. has outpaced SDSU in basketball is a ridiculous statement, even under the context of saying this because football is way more important to Boise St. Say that out loud and let it register with how absurd it sounds. Since 2010 (I think Boise joined the MW in 2010 or 2011) SDSU has made the NCAA tourney 11 times, advancing to the round of 32 six times, advancing to the sweet sixteen four times, and advancing to the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in 2023. I’m even excluding the 2020 team which was the best in program history. During this same span, Boise St. has made five tourney appearances, three of which were “first four” playin games and have amassed a total of ZERO VICTORIES. SDSU has won five MW tourneys since 2010, Boise has One. SDSU has won or tied for ten regular season championships to Boise’s two. I’m not trying to pick a fight here, and I enjoy most of your posts, but c’mon Dan, this is silly.

think the UNLV OC also applied for the Aztec HC - he lost a QB in the portal and then another but still has been able to produce a decent QB and offense
sure seems as though Lewis brought in a decent HS QB but will lose the Red Shirt Freshman QB -
brought in a quality RB but since he has over used him so he can get all those yards BUT will lose all the other RB's
should have learned the lesson that Colorado did from last year - a team needs quality OL and DL to win games
as expected will lose to the quality teams BSU - OSU - WSU But should Not have lost the game to Central Michigan - could cost the team a trip to a Bowl game - while not that big of a deal - it does when you come to recruiting and the extra days of Practice
Big Q who will he be able to keep of the quality players from this season for next and who will he be able to recruit from the next Portal
would also add that when recruits might be watching games at Snapdragon it looks terrible to see the sand field and empty seats - not his fault but he has to push that to the AD

If Boise can do it we can too Really? Thirty years ago we were supposed to become the "Miami of the West." We've had a hard time keeping up with Fresno State! Didnt Fresno just lose to Hawaii? -- I guess I'm an optimist, if you wanna go full doomer more power to ya!

OK, here's what I see.
Like Chuck Long, Coach Lewis came in here and was very personable. A likeable guy with a lot of energy who's a good talker. Unlike Chuck Long, he's actually done it successfully before.
And like Tom Craft he's got some good offensive ideas, but unlike Tom Craft he doesn't know how to get the most out of his offense.
What I'm seeing is a guy learning on the job like this is his first HC job - but it isn't. That's got me perplexed. What we all know is that coaching in the West is different than coaching in the East or Midwest. We've had a handful of coaches come in here with their Midwest mentality and coaching style, bringing in their Midwest coaches, and fail miserably because those systems and coaching styles just aren't as effective here. Chuck Long's OC and DC were not good fits out here. Certainly not with non Power conference type players.
Coach Lewis is more competent than Chuck Long, without a doubt. But, to this point, he hasn't been as competent as Tom Craft, and Craft was in over his head. With the experience he has, Coach Lewis shouldn't still be learning on the job by this point. He may not be capable of taking on double duty as HC and OC. Not here.
So what do we do? The defense looked pretty bad down the stretch tonight, and they got worked by Boise. The offense hasn't been good except for 2 or 3 games.
Time for new coordinators? (Coach Lewis stepping down as OC, replacing the DC.) Should that happen at the end of the season?
It feels like it's too soon, but we're seeing this team stagnate, and stagnating when you're just below mediocre isn't OK. Something needs to change, and soon.

The team is young and has a ton of injuries. Hoke left the shelf bare and the other half of the roster transferred. We should never lose to New Mexico in anything and I am pissed but this is a transition year and should be viewed as such. It just feels worse coming off of Hoke’s last 2 seasons. We actually should be 4-5 right now if we would have changed kickers earlier. If things aren’t better by the end of next season seats should start getting hot.

Agreed. He needs an offensive coordinator, but can he admit that fact? He can always leave, Kent State will more then likely be looking for a new head coach at the end of the year. We never get that lucky (to have an unwanted coach leave on his own without a buyout). At this point I'm not even sure Coach Lewis is unwanted, but he needs to make changes, and it damned well sure seems like he needs help.

But giviving up almost 500 yards again, a whole new coaching staff on defense. This defense is just not good at all. In every phase. And lewis should get a reduction in salary. We got Wickered.

This program has really had zero success for 30-40 years outside of when Rocky Long had been here. Tony White should have been hired. Not flashy but a football coach. We tried to go offense which we did with Tollner, Craft and Chucky. That did not go well. We tried doing that again and it’s failed.
Build with defense and toughness but find young innovative guys to run the offense.

I’ll take a defense that only gives up 21 points. And 14 of those came on two big runs. It wasn’t the defense that cost us the game, this hundred percent falls on the offense.

But disagree with the game analysis It wasn't the defense's fault After the two plays they checked out mentally in the first quarter, they gave up 7 points the rest of the way Any below average offense vs this New Mexico defense would be able to get at least 22 points So basically Aztec Fast is 6 points worse than the minimum production of a below average offense

Maybe bring in a graybeard to take over the OC position and help support the Head Coach? Andy Ludwig is available and should have a couple more years of coaching left in the tank? I think you sdsuballer nailed it above, this program/team does not need anymore younger coaches without real D1 experience (they have enough of that already!) This program is really circling the drain and needs HELP?, there is nothing from within this group that is going to change the direction going forward.

it sure seemed that numerous passes by the SDSU QB were deflected by the DL and the QB also had problems when he tried to run
Lobos DB were injured yet the offense could not take advantage - they seemed out of sync -
Only 1 TD against a week Lobo Defense
still wonder would the UNLV OC have been better ?
let's also be real - coaches have to be able to use the Portal to the Max and it does not seem that Lewis can bring in the talent
He seems tied to the HS QB and the RB transfer - so will very likely lose the back up QB and numerous RB's
key as always you have to have dominant OL and DL - yes that is the hardest group to recruit
Q for those in the know - When the score was 14-12 Lobos why not go for two point after touch down to tie the score
The SDSU offense does not seem to be creative so how is he going to be able to recruit better players

Sean Lewis should have at least 3 seasons before his coaching seat begins to warm. Is he the second coming of Don Coryell? No. I’m convinced however, he has a system which is capable of producing winning seasons. In his first season (with the possible exception of Boise St.) his teams have played hard and a bowl game is still possible. This team was poised for the coup de grasse vs Wash St. (a late int derailed that) Every true Aztec fan should support our team and its first year head coach 100%! Failure to do so could mean another painful slide into mediocrity. Will you be satisfied with being the Wyoming of the Pac ? Eight wins was Craig Bohls crowning jewel. Does alternating between the Potato and Arizona Bowls every year satisfy you ? Will that put butts in seats ? Or increase NIL funding ? Because that is Lewis' plateau

This whole thing of comparing coaches from yesteryear to todays coaches and games is hard to do. There are all kinds of different issues that are in completely different areas now. -Recruiting system -NIL -Transfer Portal -Social Media -Declining Participation -Injury concerns -Funding discrepancies within the Division and Conferences Does this make one easier or harder, that is the question. The game is evolving in soo many different directions now in that coaches are now seeing everything running at hyper speed and coaching is soo much more then just the X's and O's Do todays coaches do things better or worse, hard to say it's just DIFFERENT Yes, you can. NIL has always been there. It was under the table. Don Coryells came in, replaced a garbage roster with JC kids, devised the power I formation, and got to winning. Hoke came in, found some really good Co-ordinators, trusted them, and the program went on a 13 year run of being on the top tier. This guy comes in with an offensive philosophy that has proven to not be effective, believes he is qb whisperer, and offensive savante. There's a reason why swiss cheese defenses look stout against the AztecFast, it's very predictable.
