The program is on the right track and is improving every week. I have confidence that Coach Lewis and staff are going to get us to where we want to be.

SDSU Football needs to accept the fact that they screwed the pooch for over 20 years starting back in the mid to late 90's and put out a terrible product.
These years of lack luster teams, year after year in combination with No real game day experiences in a ugly worn out stadium lacked any kind of excitement for the students or alumni are now a glaring issue. The same game promotions and activities were played out and needed improving.
Take away the KGB Sky show and the attendance numbers were not very good.
There is also another fact that SDSU being such a commuter college for soo many students, that were spread out all over San Diego and had no reason to stay or go to anything on campus up until Cox arena opened up and that was much more basketball with No spill-over to Football.
These are the alumni/boosters that are lacking right now, the late 20 years old's with kids running around the stands and the 30-40 networking and would really be helping support the program.
This University needs to understand they need to work much harder then they are now to win back and establish the fanbase, they basically need to start all over.
The first thing would be to lower the tickets and concession prices for a couple years, build the demand first then reevaluate the prices later. This is going on it's third season and the crowds are showing by dressing as empty seats every game. The look on TV is terrible and it's more then just a bad field and NO CANOPIES.
***The play on the field also needs to improve but look at what support they had in the grand opening season (Luke warm at best!)
Adela and JD this is on you guys, major improvement is needed in the Marketing and Promotions Department, the summer interns are no longer cutting it, Hire a real department.

I am sure they do some type of Revenue maximization program. Problem is you need good assumptions with regards to price points that would attract people to the game. I was a 30+ year ticket holder. When building Snapdragon, I did surveys that asked what we would be willing to pay for certain seats. I remember saying I would not pay any of the prices they were suggesting. So, the athletic department did do research. When we saw the pricing they came up with I thought a lot of folks must have said they would pay the prices. I guess the question comes down to whether you want max revenue vs. max attendance. Looking at the last two home games, Aztecs tickets are pretty much in line with what the Padres are going for, and they sell out nearly every game, so baseball fans are paying those prices for quite a few games each season. Aztecs football has fewer games, thus higher prices, but not that much higher. And if the Aztecs were having as good a year as the Padres, Aztec football would be near a sellout. Current Aztec football tickets are expensive for the casual fan when the team is mediocre to poor.

I agree with your comments. Lewis deserves our support for a couple of seasons. We really have to avoid quick knee-jerk reactions and see how things actually develop. Things are trending the right direction, and it will be interesting to see how we fare Friday night. Regarding the geriatric crowd, we're paying now for all those years in the late 80s and 90s when students never showed up. Anyone calling for Lewis to be fired after a 3-4 start are just being silly. They just want to bash on the program. But they are the first clowns to jump on the bandwagon. We're not bashing for the sake of bashing. We see what we see. Lewis simply wasn't a good hire. How is it some other MW programs made excellent hires this off season and SDSU's was rather tepid Jeff Choate and Bronco were excellent hires. Those programs are already showing improvement. 3-4 is a mirage of FCS level wins. Outside of the QB, this team performs like the last two squads have. Penalties, mistakes, and mental errors. The only difference is the Coaching Staff. Personally, Wickers two FB hires were mediocre at best. Perhaps AdlT should have used a hiring or consulting firm for the this Coach. JD got a Trumpian bargain when he bought into the flash and glitz of AztecFast

This team could be 5-2 if it weren't for Coach Lewis getting in the way of his team's success.
I'm not saying he should be fired yet.
But, he's a bad hire so far. Especially him playing Daddy Ball with his RB with a room of talented RBs gathering dust. His team is completely undisciplined and never improving on this as the season progresses. Every team should try a flea flicker at least once a game once they watch film.
Lewis even tried running sprints with Cooper as a PR move to punish him for flipping the bird during the game instead of pulling him off the field like a normal freaking coach. That made him look like Chuck Long.
This team has literally changed the way I root for the Aztecs. I used to cheer after every decent gain the offense made since the mid-90s. Now, I hold my breath and look for penalty flags before I celebrate

Hell, they'll support the college team they grew up rooting for as SDSU alumni. There's not much in this realm compared to the game day experience of an SEC school when being a student is the entry into the world of fandom and not the end of it.

Especially when your wins come against the bottom 1/4th. I engage with fans of UNM and UNR. They see the difference in level of play, less mistakes, better Coaching decisions than their previous Staffs. Because of who they are, those Schools will rarely be in the upper crust of the MW. But, these Coaches will move their programs out of the basement and into the middle tier and will be make a lot of Bowl games. I also hear what the former ballers on this board are seeing. Not much. The are disappointed in the discipline level, bad tackling angles, and other signs of what Constitutes a well Coached squad. I do see Lewis moving us back into the middle tier. Lots of 6-8 win seasons. But, in the MW where there are 3-4 guaranteed wins every year. In the new PAC, a Lewis Coached squad will be the guaranteed W.

Young folks have very short attention spans. For some, going to any sporting event can feel like going to traffic school or jury duty.
If SDSU's marketing dept can make a game feel like Coachella, we may get some traction from the youngins? (shrugs) But for now, it's just one stop before heading down to Gaslamp Quarter and getting their swerve on.
Yes, Lewis' brand of football is a bit more exciting than Rocky's, but it's barely moving the needle when you can't win games.
Winning solves everything.
Oldie Out

I was pretty dubious of Lewis after the first few games But now I am encouraged. In evaluating a coach it is much more than just therecord. The record depends upon the quaity of your players and very heavily on the quality of your opponents. One of my main criteria of a coach is, is the team better at the end of the year than at the start of the year. Is there steady improvement? If the WSU game is an indicater I think the team is much better than at the start. I think we will see even more by the end of the season. My one big concern is that in the 4th quarter Lewis seems to be playing not to lose and loses his aggrsivenes. I think in the 4th quater of the WSU game the defense went nto prettty much a prevent defense. In the 3rd quarteer there were a lot of blitzes and the WSU B was really bothered and mostly ineffective. But in the 4th quarter they stopped the blitzes and the QB ate us up.

Felt like the only fans there were from WSU … total embarrassment whenever the home crowd was prompted by the canned announcement to "make some noise" and responded with - Crickets. But that meter sure jumped -must've been measuring silence, though. The WSU Go Cougs call easily drowned out any wimpy SDSU effort to "make some noise" Whether it's the demographics of the crowd, the inability of the team to get people excited about them, the lack of a crowd, the crappy field condition, or the absence of canopies, the combination is absolutely brutal at home games. And it only seems to get worse at every game. I wish I knew what the answer is. I grew up in San Diego but lived in the dorms for two years while in college. I did manage to talk four or five guys into going to the games and we certainly got crazy while there. But getting people to go even back then wasn't easy. That was circa 1972. I'm envious when I see crowded stadiums with involved fans. Of course, we have managed to do it in basketball. I have a strong - and bad - feeling that things are going to get worse long before they show signs of improvement, especially with the advent of NIL and Aztecs FB status in the Group of Outsiders. More empty seats will be available in SD Stadium next season.

The new NLI day structure will be something to keep an eye on (still do not fully understand changes and affects) We all seem to know the NIL will be a serious issue for this team going forward in getting players (hope for the best, I guess?) Go Aztecs?

The exorbitant ticket prices have effectively canceled the "family outing" demo and the cost of everything else is just as bad. Beautiful facility, horrible field conditions, poorly coached team lacking the physical & mental toughness that were a hallmark of the Rocky Long teams--compared to attending an Aztec basketball game at Viejas is as stark as night & day. I'm not optimistic about the prospects for this football program in today's college football environment.

They lost at home to Montana St. Not sure what it is to brag about UNR. They did beat Oregon St at home but their only other victories are against Troy and Eastern Washington and they haven't won a MWC game. They do play AFA at home in a couple of weeks so they are unlikely to go winless in the MWC. We had 5 penalties yesterday. The game was lost on the LOS where we were outmatched. We need to bring in better talent and more depth on both lines. I would say that JD's hire of Hoke was a bad hire but he may have just been looking for a short term guy to have the job until we got into the PAC. Hoke lacked energy and really appeared to have retired on the job. The book is out on Lewis and I am willing to give him at least two full recruiting classes before making a decision on whether or not he is right for the job. He wasn't hired until the end of November and the only member of the previous staff to stay on was Lindley.

I do remember when Pat Hill was hired at Fresno. His first year was terrible. I remember when we played them I thought wow he is a terrible coach. But in the years after he proved to be pretty darn good. So it is really hard to judge the first year of a coach. If he comes to a team that has pretty good talent he can do ok his first year. If he comes to a team with little talent it may take a couple of years to build it up. Remember Lewis is coming into a team that was 4-8 last year. And now with the portal it is even harder.
