I remember in 2002 when Cal hired a coach named Jeff Tedford to replace Tom Holmoe who went 1-10 in 2001. Tedford's first team went 7-5 on 02, 8-6 in 03, 10-2 in 04. He had several more great seasons in ensuing seasons. As someone who followed Cal closely during the Tedford years - season tickets close - he would faceplant late in his tenure as he changed the type of athlete he recruited ... the 4 and 5 stars that passed on SC, UCLA, UW. But he was instantly successful and brought back and lit up a checked out, apathetic Cal fanbase in year 1. Fast forward 20+ years ... I remember UNLV hired this new coach Barry Odom in 23 and he went 9-5 and is currently 6-2 in year 2 after UNLV football went 5-7, 2-10, 0-6 the 3 previous seasons. 🤔 There are scores of similar examples all over the country just over the past 10-15 years. Look at SMU these days. Look at Boise with almost every new coaching hire. When you hire the right coach, you usually know it right away, or at least pretty early. You at least know he MIGHT be the guy because you start seeing clear signs of inprovement in some aspects, as opposed to seeing no improvement in ANY area/phase of the game. I'm not 100% sure Lewis was a bad hire, but I've gone from 50-50 to start the season to at least 90% sure this won't work. By "work" I mean eventually (soon) be as good in football as we've been in basketball. Win more conference championships than any other program in the conference and in some years being one of the 2-3 best non-P4 programs with legit shot to make the playoff. If Lewis is "THAT GUY", I think we should have already seen things that make us say "wow, this is starting to look really good". Maybe not record-wise, but in various/most areas of the team. We aren't seeing anything IMO. To be clear, I don't think perpetual 6 to 8 win seasons are "success". I think some ... many? ... on here think that would be just fine. 6 to 8 win seasons aren't coming close to filling up Snaodragon and electrifying the fanbase, casual fans, open minded sports fans that don't currently care much about Aztec football and all current and future alumni. Just my .02. The good news it'll all play out and we will see. The bad news ... there ain't time to screw around and acccept mediocrity or worse if we want to actually have a football program down the road. While I realize that no matter how bad the rest of this season goes ... say we lose every remaining game ... Lewis isn't getting fired. He probably shouldn't be. But he'd would at many schools that actually prioritize football. Our football program will NEVER be what the basketball program has been. If Boise can do it we can too

Our football program will NEVER be what the basketball program has been. If Boise can do it we can too We've been saying "If_______(fill in the blank) can do it, so can we" for at least 30 years. Boise has done it with wildly less "raw material" to work with, in the middle of nowhere. The key factor that I can see---and others have mentioned this---is that WE do NOT know how to, or when to, pick HC's. Can't say if it's our president or AD, but we have a very poor record of coach selection. UNLESS that changes, we'll continue to be the Little Train That COULDN'T. Boise, and others, are succeeding in the "new era" of NIL, etc., while we make excuses. Lewis may turn this around, but this ship is taking on water, faster than we can bail. The way this team has been managed, it's hard to see great recruits signing up for next year, and easy to see, half the team running for the portal. The circus barker show Mr. Lewis used to get hired, won't work going forward.

Jerry Lewis, or whatever his name is, will never be Steve Fisher.

I like him as a coach, but I think he needs to step it up on the recruting front. Focusing on local talent, especially the ones in our own backyard (Ty Olsen, Honor Faalave) is the way to build this program. We won't be able to outbid any Power schools, so we have to develop and recruit local talen like HELL. There are only 3 local Daygo kids in the 2025 class committed here. Need to see better progress on that front before I start feeling confident again.

He had over 3500 yards at Cathedral HS averaging 10.5 yards a carry over the 4 years. AVERAGING 10.5 yards! He ran for over 200 yards when they won the State championship. He's a freakin' local legend and I bet he transfers out next year. Lewis falls in love with a kid and then will play them till they get hurt but defends it by saying the kid is "tough" and wants to "compete". He's an idiot and I wouldn't want my son to play for him.

Which is bonkers to me. You're telling me that Sutton couldn't get a few carries at the end of that Boise game? I watched Sutton play live. I thought he was destined for at least a low power 5 program. I hope some team takes him and actually develops him.

His press conferences are a joke. Pure fluff.

His press conferences are a joke. Pure fluff. So are the powder puff questions. I emailed Kirk Kenney asking him why no one ever asks Lewis about Cooper's ridiculous number of carries vs the rest of the RBs. Haven't heard back from him nor seen that questions put forth. Probably won't.

Our football program will NEVER be what the basketball program has been. Yet Boise has been. Looks like they might be again. You can make a strong argument they've been better than our basketball program. Given that football is substantially more important than basketball, they've really outpaced Aztec hoops. Yet, you say we will "NEVER" that good. That's typical Aztec fan mentality. You may be correct that we never will, but it doesn't mean that we never COULD. Just keep hiring mediocre coaches and that'll definitely be the case.

Probably won't. - or what has happened to the TE's? - the drop off in Special Teams play? - why still soo many penalties? - field conditions? - plans for next year with what looks like another big turn over?

The 2021 State Championship wasn't even his best game. I watched Lucky rushed for 431 Yards and Scored 7 Touchdowns for Cathedral to beat Orange Lutheran 71-62 to win the the SCal Championship to go on to play Folsom for the State Championship. The OC Register just reported that USC head coach Lincoln Riley announced that Jayden Maiava, Sophomore UNLV transfer, will start over starting QB Miller Moss against Nebraska. It would be nice to see Lewis make a change also. I would really like to see JTJ get an opportunity to get a lot more reps and not only when O'Neil gets laid out on the field and can't play.

What's really gonna suck is when Sutton transfers to someone like Colorado State or Utah State and then becomes the dude to run our D over annually
