Most everything is more expensive in California, but gas prices are significantly different. To start I’ll suggest it is 100% on the backs of the left. Democrats are ripping us off. The Sidewinder Chevron Felicity, California $6.09 per gallon just a very short few miles away in Yuma it is $2.49 less. WHY? Continue east. Out in the middle of nowhere Blossom, Texas $2.55 a gallon. Keep going, Hot Springs, Arkansas $2.79. Let’s go north, Cadiz, Kentucky $2.99, continue north Sullivan, Indiana $3.09, Illinois $2.99, St Louis $2.89 and po-duck Missouri $2.69. My initial thought it was blue state versus red state. I’m wrong, even in the blinding blue states of Oregon and Washington are nearly $2.00 less than California. This 100% attributable to radical democrats getting away with rape and pillage. The obvious question, why would anyone with an IQ greater than double digits vote for a democrat in California?

Average price of gas in Oregon today: $3.67 Average price of gas in California today; $4.64 That's a gap of 97 cents. Average price of gas in Washington today: $4.06. That's a gap of 58 cents.

Cheapest prices (per GasBuddy) today: California, $3.63, near Visalia. Oregon, $2.95, in Newport. Washington, $3.08, in Wapato. In the Yuma area, $2.85, at several ARCO stations. Texas, $1.99, in Highlands. And in Sacramento, the cheapest gas is $3.89. In the San Diego area, it is $3.91 (Escondido). You can easily find expensive gas in certain areas of California--is it still over $6/gallon adjacent to the airport in San Diego? But California still has the highest average price for regular gas in the US. Which is just silly.

Answer the question, why are democrats ripping us off? The vitriol you display towards "Democrats" is disturbing and it's oversimplified. There are a metric ton of reasons why: Higher tax rates, refinery issues, environmental regulations, corporate dynamics and simple, basic human greed. Voters have approved gas tax rate hikes. Prices in California have declined by nearly two dollars in the last two years. California has logistical complications that don't appear in other states.

I live two blocks from a Shell station that runs right alongside the freeway. It's $.80 to $1.00+ more than the gas station I regularly go to which is just a few blocks up the road in the other direction. That's why we have things called "averages."

My gas has been $4.19 to $4.29 per gallon for the last several months. High, but not absurdly high when you look at where it should be adjusted for inflation over the last 50 years.

By the way, a big part of the price jump in gas a couple years ago was due to Trump's buddy, Vladimir Putin. If he hadn't invaded Ukraine then Russian oil would still be a major factor in the world market, keeping supply high and prices lower.
But Putin wants to rebuild the Soviet Union, so he invaded Ukraine and got his oil embargoed by 2/3 of the countries on the planet, shrinking supply for everyone else, and causing a big jump in prices.
Supply and demand. Funny how Republicans forget how that works when they let their hatred of Democrats get in the way.

Yep--it spiked, but retreated to price levels seen before the invasion by the end of 2022. Which doesn't explain why gas prices are still much higher in this state than the national average, and more importantly, why the prices are pretty much consistently the highest in the US.

California has it's own gas that requires special refining (for lower emissions). B.) There are higher gas taxes here than in the rest of the country. The benefit of A is that smog is hugely improved (much less) than it was 30 years ago. The benefit of B is that we have adequate money for roads. Of course, that road money is dipped into for other projects, which shouldn't happen, but we do have enough money, and the state is running a surplus instead of a deficit like a lot of Republican led states. Pros and cons. I'll take the cleaner air. It used to be brown, now it's not.

Pros and cons. I'll take the cleaner air. It used to be brown, now it's not. Yes, "A" is true--however, that has created basically a closed system, preventing California from getting gasoline from any other states (California ships gas to other states, but the pipelines only go one way). Only California refineries can make the special blend that this state requires, which drives up prices. When refineries go off-line or close (as is happening with the Phillips 66 refinery in Carson, closing by the end of next year), prices will go up. And if you think Newsom's hair-brained idea to require refineries to maintain a minimum inventory of gas (will there be separate inventories of winter and summer blend gas?) will keep prices stable--he has you fooled. Regarding "B", 2 years ago, this state allegedly had a $100 billion surplus, and even with the surplus, road monies were used for other things. This budget year, the DEFICIT is estimated to be as high as $73 billion, with preliminary estimates the nest 3 years hovering around a $30 billion deficit for each year. Most of these problems have been created by politicians in Sacramento, especially in the last 20-30 years.

Well I wouldn't understate the importance of cleaner burning fuel, especially in Southern California. Several cities in the region have bad air quality, which leads to health issues like greater incidences of asthma, cancer, and infant mortality. We definitely need to work on the refinery issue. Everyone in this country is paying less for gas then the actual societal costs of smog health effects and carbon emission global warming associated with gasoline vehicles. The gas tax rates do not adequately compensate for these societal ills of gasoline vehicles.
