Don't worry, that game will never be forgotten by those of us there at that time. For all you guys that were at that game, you all need to get together and sit down with the EVT guys and girls and document it. These games you guys all talk about need to be put down in writings and collect all memorabilia maybe even find out if MCRD has any history of those games (pics, media guides....) These things need to be written down from the guys that saw them first hand Go Aztecs! No, not this old - wasn't yet born - but parents (apparently) were alive and well... based on some of this memorabilia … Apparently, the MCRD game expected such a crowd that it was the only game they played in Balboa Stadium that season - the rest were played at Aztec Bowl. made 'em big, for some of the older eyes out there hopefully they don't crash any flip phones.

Tom Ables covered everything pretty well in his book Go Aztecs! which is available through the Aztec Shops and on Amazon. The book also has lots of pictures by Ernie Anderson. I believe every Aztec football fan should have a copy.
Below is a link to the book at Aztec Shops:

Writes Jon Wilner of The Mercury News: “The eight remaining schools in the Mountain West will beg and plead for invitations to the Pac-12. But only two are likely to get the call. ... The six Mountain West schools that don’t get called up could be left for the dustbin of major college football. We are simply being honest, folks.”I've tracked the schools that have been linked by the press to MWC Expansion, but first lets recap the current MWC school status. MWC = 6-PAC Offers - Phase I * San Diego State, Fresno State, Boise State and Colorado State MWC PAC consideration - Phase II* UNLV linked to the PAC, AAC and even Big XII (Nevada Regents linked to Nevada) * AFA also linked to the PAC & AAC (Army/Navy/AFA) MWC six remaining * San Jose State, Hawaii, New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah State and Nevada * Stay as FBS Conference and add schools * Drop to FCS (?) * San Jose State, New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah State to CUSA * AFA & UNLV to the AAC or Big XII * Nevada Regents have linked UNLV & Nevada together (which conferences will be quick to separate) FBS Linked to MWC* CUSA Schools: New Mexico State, UTEP (both are extremely likely, unless the MWC dissolves) & Sam Houston State * Sun Belt: Texas State (said to be a PAC-6 target) FCS Linked to MWC (FCS must pay $5MM for FBS Membership)* Big Sky: Sacramento State, UC Davis, Montana State, Montana, Northern Arizona, * MVC: South Dakota State, South Dakota, North Dakota State, North Dakota * United (WAC/Atlantic Sun): Tarleton State (said to be an up-and-coming FCS program with tons of money and potential just outside of Dallas-Fort Worth), Idaho * USD Pioneer League, FCS non-scholarship team has NOT been linked to the MWC I like UC Davis a lot for the new PAC - great academic program, decent football school, nice sized metropolitan area in Sacramento. Fits the traditional PAC geography. If I was picking I would pick them, but I'm not sure how the new PAC views academic performance. Texas State is a big school (38K enrollment), solid football team, bad academics - just like most of the teams in consideration. Opens up Texas recruiting though, and isn't at altitude. I think they have a really good chance, although it will partly depend on how the new PAC views having a school in Texas - is it a good or bad thing? Utah State makes some sense, they are good in basketball and football. Their academics aren't great - same as UNLV. However, huge MWC exit fee compared to Texas State. UNLV only makes sense in terms of geography, their academics suck, as do their football and basketball teams. Plus the whole Nevada/UNLV Nevada board of regents thing. With Utah State, UNLV, Nevada, New Mexico, I think the new PAC wants to wait to see how everything shakes out - and doesn't necessarily see those schools as being as important as SDSU, Boise, Colorado St. and Fresno State. Air Force to the AAC makes way to much sense for it to not happen. New Mexico State and UTEP to the Mountain West similarly make a lot of sense. Putting New Mexico, New Mexico State and UTEP in the same conference is hilarious, and I hope New Mexico enjoys sharing a conference with their local rivals! I wish UCSD had a football team, they would be a great inclusion - their basketball team is good considering their resources and previous D-2 status, as is their academic prowess. Would be an interesting idea to add them for (non-football) sports - I bet their basketball team would get a lot better with more financial resources. Getting schools like UCSD and Davis in the conference could entice CAL/Stanford to come back. If this is supposed to be the the Best of the Rest League, why would you call up FCS squads who don't have the revenue, facilities, NIL, boosters and donors required to be in the MW let alone the Pac ? Isn't that the reason we want to get away from the MW ? The Schools that WOSU reached out to were chosen because they meet that criteria. As to the Academic side, outside of a now defunct Pac, does it really matter at this level. Being high and mighty is what burned down the Pac12.

I love this stuff. This was a bit before my time but the schools look so familiar. The first game I remember was Aztecs vs. UOP in 1958. Dick Bass ran through us like butter!!!! We lost 68-17 in Aztec Bowl.

As to the Academic side, outside of a now defunct Pac, does it really matter at this level. Being high and mighty is what burned down the Pac12. UC Davis has a 678M endowment, similar to UNM and Nevada, and double that of UNLV, Texas State and SDSU. UC San Diego has a 1.36B endowment. Booster and donor money would not be a concern with any of the teams that I suggested. Texas State has a 27K stadium renovated a decade ago. UC Davis does not have a real football stadium, true. UC San Diego would not be a football include, similar to Gonzaga or St. Mary's. I think that it matters to an extent, yes. Olympic sports do actually matter to CAL and Stanford. Tradition matters to them as well. Ultimately, I think the PAC wants to wait on the final two teams - wait to see what CAL and Stanford do, wait to negotiate with the MW first. The PAC may end up going with UNLV and Nevada as the final two, or Utah State and New Mexico, or Texas State and North Texas, if they can't get CAL and Stanford back (which undoubtedly is their goal). It kind of doesn't matter which two they go with out of those if they can't get CAL and Stanford, it won't move the needle ratings wise.

Not sure if this has been reported AFA is looking to join the AAC to be in same conference as Army and Navy Ironically, if that happens both conferences will be down to 6 members each. I think the Pac6 will win this tug of war. Not only do they have more money to play with, they'll get a bigger media deal than the MWC.

My guess is that the MWC will be willing to give UNLV and Air Force more of the pie to get them to stay.

Can AzTex or Zura help me out here - do you have an old rotary phone I can borrow? Or will it take one of those wall-mounted crank phones with a cylinder that I talk into? All this fancy new-fangled technology!

Today from NY Times/The Athletic regarding possible MW expansion: “Sources familiar with discussions believe UTEP and Texas State are potential targets, as FBS members who wouldn’t have to make a transition. Sam Houston might be an option, too. New Mexico State is in the region, but the school is going through a presidential search, and New Mexico may not favor adding the Aggies. FCS Tarleton, located in Stephenville, is another potential Texas option. The school just recently completed its transition from Division II but is growing rapidly and has a lot of money at its disposal.”
I alluded to this in an earlier post, but UNM would only advocate for NMSU if the conference's survival absolutely depended on it, and then they'd stab NMSU in the back at their first opportunity. That's how that rivalry goes. They'd rather take a school that was playing D-II football a couple years ago than be conference mates with NMSU.

For the most part the phone numbers were the prefix (using just the first letter of the prefix) and a 4 digit number. However, for some reason, some of the numbers were the prefix plus 5 digits.
In 1953 my family was still living in Texas and I was in third grade. We came out in the summer of 1954. I don't remember anything about the phone numbers back then. But, I did a google search for "San Diego phone numbers in 1953" and came up with the following link to a pdf of the 1953 phone book. If you don't know what a phone book was ask your parents.

I was able to look up my dad's name, address, phone number from the white pages before I was born (My name is still on the Sharp Memorial Wall of 'Shame', at least it was still there when my kids were born at Sharp Mary Birch and I wandered the halls waiting for my wife to hurry up and finish .) Brought a little tear to my eye seeing his name in the phone book. (kidding about the wife part)
