from the 7/30/2024 Alb Journal article:
Seven of the 10 Division I teams on UNM’s 11-game nonconference schedule have played in the NCAA Tournament in one or both of the past two seasons.
“I think it’ll be the hardest nonconference schedule that Lobo basketball (has ever had),” UNM coach Richard Pitino said in a media scrum after a practice earlier this month, before joking that the Journal “checked” him on that statement and questions if it is actually the toughest schedule.
“It’ll certainly be the top two or three. You never know when you schedule. You didn’t know JT (Toppin, the MW Freshman of the Year who transferred to Texas Tech) was leaving until the last day. You don’t know what the other rosters have. UCLA loaded up. St. John’s loaded up. VCU got their best player back. So that’s the fun in it. But certainly, we will be challenged, our fans will be engaged very early in the process.”
The Lobos reputation for weak nonconference scheduling is largely accurate — due in part to good teams genuinely having little to gain by playing in the Pit and the fact that the Lobos must play a large number of home games to generate large ticket revenue for a school that has never been able to rely on football to do so.

We may be starting conference play with a losing record. The good thing is that we collectively have talented players. The big question is at what point will they become a cohesive unit?

There are 4 to 5 games that are TBD/TBA, I imagine those games will be 'buy' games scheduled at Viejas or another neutral location. On another note, I would assume we would play Long Beach State (Coach Acker) and have additional Big West, WCC or WAC home games coming soon.

Dutcher knows the importance of putting together a solid OOC schedule - while he is not the first school to complete their schedule he importantly sets up what is best for the team

Now that the Gonzaga game has been locked in, it should be easy to slot the buy games.

I talked to Coach Acker at Cali Live and he said nothing is scheduled with the Aztecs. It didn't sound like it would be anytime soon, but you know this stuff changes season to season so maybe in the future. I think Coach Acker needs to get a better feel for his team, bring in his players, have some time to get his system in place, and then maybe get us on the schedule. I didn't get a sense that he felt it would be much of a game at this point. Besides, I am not sure the Aztecs benefit at this point because if we win, we are supposed to, and if we lose, well bad loss at this point. I didn't get a chance to talk to Bland, but I saw him with his UW gear on. Good to see him back in college basketball and that would be a good home and home.

Much rather play them than a SW Arkansas State or NE Montana.

Much rather play them than a SW Arkansas State or NE Montana. Ironically there really is a Southern Arkansas University (SAU) in Magnolia, Arkansas + Montana State University - Northern Campus in Havre, MT. SAU is located in S'Western Arkansas in MSU Northern in North Central Montana. But, yes, I'd like to see us play Big West & WCC teams and perhaps a top WAC school to fill the remaining buy games at Viejas, since we're already playing Texas A&M, Creighton, Oregon, Gonzaga, and a revamped CAL team.

Of course I was actually referring to the infamous DII Southern Arkansas Muleriders and the Montana State Northern Lights. The Montana school has an acceptance rate of 100% with 683 students.
I don't think I've ever seen an institute of higher learning with a 100% acceptance rate.
