I just hope we can continue to play those hayseeds from Fresno. Id rather Cal, Stanford, Utah, ASU, Zona, come back to OSU and Wazzu and then add SDSU and, perhaps, CSU and UNLV and create a really good western centric conference myself. That would have still guaranteed a slot in the CFP and been worth between $20-30M per school. After a few years, then UCLA would be begging to come back and we would have a vote as to whether we'd accept them. I can dream, right?

The longer WSU and OSU wait to build up the PAC2, the more they will be seen as nothing more than G5 teams. If they were smart, they would start making moves to protect their reputations for the long term. Another metaphor, penny wise, pound foolish. Both PAC2 schools are committed to scheduling agreements for the 2024-25 season with the Mountain West Conference (MWC) for football and the West Coast Conference (WCC) for basketball and Olympic sports. The MWC $270 million, six-year media rights agreement with CBS and FOX Sports, covers the period from 2020-21 to 2025-26. Football and basketball games televised on CBS, CBS Sports Network, Paramount Plus, FOX, FS1, FS2, and now TNT Sports (Max/TruTV). Schools have signed over there GOR to the league. Regarding the ACC lawsuits, Florida State and Clemson will not be moving for the 2024-25 season and will remain until the end of 2025 due to ongoing legal battles and the appeal process. This delays any expansion plans from the Big Ten, SEC, and likely the Big XII. Timing and opportunities are crucial. Currently, the PAC2 schools have a few options: rebuild the PAC and compensate the MWC on a sliding scale, pursue a reverse merger with the MWC to retain financial reserves, or potentially receive an invitation from the Big XII, which has yet to extend an offer. The ACC won't do anything until the multiple law suits have a resolution, so the PAC2 teams can't move there. The American Athletic Conference secured a $1 billion media rights deal with ESPN over 12 years, averaging $83.5 million per year. This is approximately four times the revenue from their previous agreement, which provided just over $20 million annually. The new deal began in the 2020-21 academic year and extends through 2031-32. Notably, the AAC did not sign a grant of rights, which would have restricted member schools from moving to a Power Five conference. This allows the PAC-2 to potentially poach AAC teams without worrying about exit fees associated with grant of rights agreements. IMO, I don't see anything happening for at least a year if not two. Thoughts?

I've made an executive decision on behalf of my addled brain and vulnerable heart to cease and desist any and all interest in or worrying about, possible expansion logistics that may or may not include the Aztecs.
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me 109 times, shame on me. I'll wait for it to actually happen before I concern myself again. The near-PAC12 thing was just too frustrating and painful.

We need your statement engraved somewhere...maybe on my forehead.

He makes some pretty good points. It would also be a good way of establishing why there would be a difference between the MWC and future PAC conference. Here are the highlights from the article: - There’s a considerable expense involved in a Pac-12 rebuild, particularly if it involves trying to poach MWC schools. The exit fee is $17 million per school and that comes with an additional $10 million (approximate) per school “poaching penalty” for the Pac-12.
- The Pac-12 has earmarked approximately $65 million in settlement funds for a possible rebuild. That would cover the penalties for six MWC schools.
- A full-blown reverse merger with the MWC has never been viewed as a desirable option for OSU and WSU. There’s considerable opposition to it, particularly in Corvallis. But officials at the two schools have been more delicate in recent months when publicly speaking about it. I find that interesting.
- The more collegial — and affordable — approach may be to offer a reverse merger with the Mountain West but require a minimum floor to each school’s athletic department budget
- For this discussion, let’s use $60 million as the annual budget floor. A three-year grace period to get there? That would motivate investment in athletic departments, and affirm the Pac-12 as the best football conference on the West Coast. That kind of conference champion would also frequently access the College Football Playoff.
- It allows the MWC schools to self-select. If only five or six schools decide they can afford it, so be it. If seven, eight, nine, 10, or all 11 get there, great. Those who can’t get to the $60 million floor aren’t serious about funding athletics anyway. Their campuses may welcome the reprieve and maybe they even collect a buyout fee. The real financial silver lining: It eliminates the costly penalties to the Pac-12 and exit fees for the joining members.
