This is why you can't fault any player for transferring. This is life altering money.

What a major overpay. Washington would’ve been better off filling out their roster with 3-4 guys in the $500-750k range. Osobor is good but one-dimensional. He was not as effective in the NCAA tournament going against P5 schools. He could get pushed around down low in the Big 10.

UDub FB NIL bought them into the Championship Game last season, now they’re shooting for the same in BBall.

dont believe any of those numbers. id like to see the tax return Agree $2m is a big number and could be with all incentives, like winning the Natty… Listen to the Gottlieb NIL series, amazing stuff

There has to be some controls in place somewhere…..or this can get out of hand quickly!
Eventually a kid making millions is not going to listen to a coach he believes is beneath him. It will be disastrous for the sport once the balance of power shifts.
Hell, I’m not sure I am ready for it and I am all in on paying the players their fair share!!

Sprinkle has to be getting a cut of that bag. By all means get paid, but the Big 10 is not the MW. As a reminder, Great had 14 points against Purdue, USU also got blown out by 40.

Listen to the Gottlieb stuff, really interesting… only one agent, but a successful one… A couple of points 1. Donors are asking about ROI on tournament wins, not seeing return, patient for now. 2. A $200k player last year is a $400k to $500k player this year. 3. Lots of players actually getting much, much less than promised

What a waste of money. I gave up on those teams and conferences long ago and haven't watched any game that didn't involve SDSU in about 40 years. There are so many better ways to spend two million dollars. Disgusting.

To put things in perspective...
My entire working career, I earned ~ $1.5mm. My wife earned ~ $2mm. I retired at 47 (2019) and my wife at 52 (2018). We live a very comfortable life (solid middle class) here in Las Vegas.
Some of these very good college players, who have a 0% chance of playing in the NBA, COULD (and SHOULD) never have to 'work' another day in the remainder of their lives.
By failing to compete in the NIL $$$ race... is it possible that SDSU won't even have a men's basketball team in 10 years, or sooner?

I convinced myself awhile ago these NIL figures are "all-in" amounts and not guaranteed. Wouldn't be surprised if there's contingencies on stats, all conference recognition, conference success, and of course march madness success. Donor fatigue will be a real thing. Putting $2million toward a new locker room or training room lasts awhile, buying a one year rental for a kid that might not pan out well and doesn't result in wins is going to hurt. There will be extra pressure on coaches to get these kids to perform...

Maybe a lower, scholarship only division will be created.
Unlike many here, I'd be happier with a team of actual student athletes that are playing for the Aztecs because they want to rather than a bunch of pro athletes earning tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars for wearing the Aztec uniforms. Not sure I can keep my passion for the Aztecs in the latter scenario.

This sets a bad precedent for semi pro sports (formerly college sports.) If Osobar is setting the market at 2M imagine what legit 5 star players are going to get in the transfer portal. Buckle up!

Did find it interesting that you don't need to be a financial planner/lawyer to be an agent. He didn't even go to college, but it's a good interview. I like that Gottlieb countered him enough to keep it balanced, such as the comment about how Poneman said donors will always be there & will donate to collectives instead of to facilities & Doug said a) the building is tax deductible (some collective donations aren't) & b) the name stays on the building but not the athlete. I also found it interesting that some of the numbers thrown around include money the athlete was getting w/o NIL (Pel/Alston/Cost of Living) & $$ that really isn't there, such as quoting the full price of a nice car (i.e., $80k) when the athlete is only getting the leased amount for X months. You literally could quota $100k when in actuality he's getting $6k via a 10-month lease. One of the guys who covers UW athletes basically said "don't believe everything you read" re: Osobor's NIL package. I do think a good portion may be real, but a lot of it could be based on pie in the sky measures (natty, X people buying various products, etc.). BTW, the theory is it's Steve Ballmer's money & it's incentive based, but it's just a rumor.

There's nothing semi about it when the amounts are as large as we've all heard quoted. They are nothing but pro athletes who happen to be going to college at the same time.
