Breath deep the gathering gloom. Watch lights fade from every room. It's a game that we love to watch and the team will be fine but some fans may not.

Gosh, I like Butler and he did make "the shot." But, if he ends up leaving I'm pretty sure we will be alright. He played great defense for us but was't exactly Stephen Curry on offense. Maybe he'll go to FAU

Ziegler just updated the article with quotes from Lamont and his family. Sounds like we can consider him as good as gone.
Wishing him the best.

Oof. That’s definitely not a tournament team. Will we see what magic Dutch can pull off. Those are just the ones who got significant playing time last year. Now add: BJ Davis Goon Pharoah Compton Taj DeGourville Thokbor Majak And then we still have 2 scholarships available, three if Johnson transfers. I highly doubt any of those guys except Magoon plays any significant role next season.

College sports is quickly being ruined for me with NIL. This sucks Totally ruining college sports, IMO. Yep. And it will destroy that which made money for them as well. I don't watch the NBA and no longer watch the NFL. I am starting not to even watch Golf because of what LIV is doing to the sport. The thing is, "professional" sports have tendencies towards socialism. But, we are seeing unbridled free market capitalism now in collegiate sports. People will quickly lose interest in that. Reading Ziegler's article, Butler's decision is all about money. He made $200K last year in NIL and he and his family feel they left money on the table. Damn, I wish I made that much, even adjusted for inflation, when I was his age.

Because of Dutcher’s own words. You enter the portal he considers you gone. Guess you didn’t read Ziegler’s article. His dad basically said he’s gone…the quote about them “leaving money on the table to return” sounded real bitter.

I don’t mind Butler entering the portal but it’s off putting to read that they sacrificed last year and if things don’t work out with more NIL somewhere else they will come back to State.
If this is just business, then the best business decision would be to move on from State’s perspective.

College sports is quickly being ruined for me with NIL. This sucks Totally ruining college sports, IMO. I agree 100%. Many of us here spend a lot of our hard earned money on season tickets and now MESA FOUNDATION. We are so loyal to our players and unfortunately it isn't the same with them. Would I do the same if I'm in their shoes, quite possibly, but it really hurts. The volunteers that run MESA are dedicated and I commend them but I am greatly disappointed in our fan base and major corporations with Aztecs in ownership positions that are NOT stepping up with donations to keep these players here. We have just as many wealthy alums as other universities but I just don't see it happening. This totally sucks.

New quotes in Zeigler’s article make it clear this was a decision solely based on money. Also sounded like his dad was sort of bitter that their family sacrificed financially last year for Butler to stay here. He traded a couple hundred thousand difference in pay for a year for his lasting legacy in SD. We all saw how fans turned on Keshad, it’s gonna happen for Butler too. Sucks all around.

Why would Dutch even want him back when his family is making it clear he only returns if he doesn’t get paid enough elsewhere. That’s a real bad look by his family. You can think that, but it’s stupid to say it publicly.

Butler probably wont play in the NBA unless he dramatically improves his game. he did enough here, so did KJ. let them get their monies before they have to go play overseas. why deny them what everyone else is getting? not their fault our fan base wont pay.

Because they went for the cash instead of finishing out their careers as Aztecs. I’m sure Washington State fans weren’t rooting for Thames and Flynn when they came to SDSU. Or Ohio State and TCU fans aren’t excited for LeDee’s success. I know they are doing what they think is best for their situation but watching Lamont in another school’s jersey is hard to swallow. It wasn’t like he was making zero dollars. He made $200,000 last year. If Lamont would have stayed he might have had his jersey retired but not now. He could have had a lifetime of adulation from San Diego and been in the Faulk, Leonard category but He just traded that possibility in for cash. When their playing days are over do you think Johnson and Butler will able to sit court side at Viejas knowing that they finished their college careers at other schools? Transferring doesn’t destroy their legacies it just puts a tarnish on it.

Next man up!!!
He's capitalizing on his fame from "The Shot" and great defensive play. Announcers gushed in the MM Tourney about his defensive prowess.
He'll get paid, and I can't blame him. It's legal, and he can help his family and himself. "Get it while you can", as the saying goes.

If he is graduating, he should move on. It's what we are told anytime we are thinking of grad school. Him getting another school to show what he is capable of in a new system, while doing what is academically common seems like a no-brainer. He is an AFL, and I wish him all the best, and thank him for what he gave us while he was here.

I'm not questioning Butler's character in the least, but I am questioning the reactions from a few of our hissy fitting fans. Let the kid decide what's best for him and his family. We got 4 great years out of Lamont. Hell, I'm so old, I remember when 4 years was all you ever got. That said, I hate the NIL and the portal too. At least we have a program that can absorb these hits, unlike the San Jose States of the world.

Brutal with only a week left in the transfer window. Roddie Anderson homecoming if he’s gone gone? I love Lamont. LOVE HIM. Additionally, I've met his his dad and had several conversations that I would describe as having some depth. I wish him nothing but the best ... but ... BUT ... I have an issue why he took so long to decide this and has kind of left Ditcher out to dry a bit. We have passed on some other guards (Dusell, others) that would've fit in pretty well IMO... especially next to Boyd. I think it's possible Boyd can be better than Lamont will next next season. So if we'd known Lamont was going to the portal, could've gone after taller combo guards or a tall 3 & D wing. Still can but many have already gone elsewhere, including to schools that are comparable. Heck, maybe we could've nailed done Cardenas ... him, Boyd and Watwr could've been a heckuva backcourt. Disappointing on several levels. NIL really sucks for us because we've deserved way better than this based on our BB program's success. At times it feels like almost everything in our world gets worse as it is "improved"
