Story below…Oregon State and Washington State are moving forward with a scheduling alliance with the MW whereby each MW school would play one of these two teams each season over the next 2 seasons with results not counting for conference standings and making those schools ineligible for the conference title. After 2 years there is likely going to be a full merger of the PAC-2 and the MW as financial penalties will preclude them from only taking a portion of the MW. Disappointing news in my opinion. I was hoping any merger would shed all the dead weight in this conference. Alas, it seems like we are stuck with them in perpetuity. sports.yahoo.com/oregon-state-washington-state-moving-forward-with-future-plans-after-victory-in-court-134733816.html

Why do you want a merger?
This is set up to end when the MW deal is up. We are joining the Pac. The only question now is who else is joining from the MW. Do Cal and Stanford come back in 2026?

If they're mentioning, "Penalties," in regards to MW teams joining OSU and WSU that means it won't be a true merger (there would be no penalties if it were a full merger).
That means only SOME of the MWC teams are joining the PAC 2. Fewer than the 9 needed to just dissolve the MWC.

A merger in the sense of joining MW teams with the PAC-2 and dropping a lot of the crap MW teams.

No penalty if they all go in some form of merger (under the PAC brand presumably).

I'm sure the MWC's media partners would love to have a new and improved MWC (under the PAC banner) to televise. I don't see a full merger happening. A PAC-14? Not a good idea.

Having now been to both the re-modeled Reser and Martin Stadium -- this is really great news for traveling SDSU fans (assuming it comes to fruition). Both are unique, and both are beautiful in their own way. True college town experiences. Do yourself a favor and go to both, and leave enough time to travel the surrounding area, whether it's the Oregon coast or the Columbia River Gorge, or the thousand places in between.

I have not been to a football game at WSU, but I have been at several game at OSU. The game experience at Oregon State is great. SDSU could learn alot from the atmosphere at OSU. I'm against the idea of this proposition of a merger with Significant penalties for taking the best of the MW over to a reconstituted PAC. This would not be in the best interest of SDSU.The winners of this proposals are the Nevada's, USU's, New Mexico's, SJSU's and Wyo. Yes I know we are crappie this year. This punishes the the SDSU, BSU,CSU, FSU, UNLV and AFA who have invested in their stadiums and facilities.

For two years, as the Pac 2, OSU and WSU will enjoy all the money left over from the Pac 12 which is a lot. The MWC teams will see little if any of that money. OSU and WSU will use that money to strengthen their athletic programs to make them more attractive to the P4 or P3 conferences. In the meantime, the MWC teams will struggle with the breadcrumbs we get. In two years, instead of inviting MWC teams to join the PAC, OSU and WSU will get invites to join the Big 12 because they have been able to take advantage of the financial war chest left over from the Pac 12 to strengthen their athletic programs. Like I said, I really hope you are right and that I am being concerned about nothing. However, I can see where the scenario mentioned above pans out and the alliance we are about to enter into only benefits OSU and WSU. Sorry, but I don't trust anyone from any of the power conferences....never have...never will.

I like the idea as a compromise. OSU and WSU must fill out it's schedule for next two years and therefore offer a financial incentive to MWC for scheduling alliance. Additionally, many MWC want to protect they will not be left out and therefore some penalty in place.
In reality, come 2026 there is no penalty for any MWC team to leave. Therefore if OSU, WSU and go the networks and negotiate the best TV contract based on the best next 6 schools I'm sure OSU and WSU is willing to pay MWC penalty with windfall of cash they will have from Pac12 coffers.

I don't know anything for sure, but I would be willing to bet some of that wealth (if OSU/WSU does indeed win their court case) will be shared with incoming schools at some point. Not equally, but a certain percentage. Otherwise, why would MWC schools merge/join? Just conference name recognition plus a couple of pretty good (but not prestigious) programs isn't enough incentive. In an odd sort of way, the MWC schools hold some leverage on that front.

WSU /OSU have done the heavy lifting here - so let them and the possible media groups take care of the selecting of schools they want besides hopefully SDSU
SDSU has to show that it can still draw fans to TV sets for the remainder of this season
In addition show that SDSU with its next FB coach will be a decent addition
maybe SDSU can lobby the Holiday Bowl to still include the PAC
Take care of business in our own back yard before we try to take over the PAC

disappointed that it doesn't include other sports as they make complete sense for all the other sports. these 2 schools fit the Mountain West. Vegas, San Jose, and SDSU are the only ones that don't.

Many are quick to "drop the dead weight" but you have to realize that someone will always be at the bottom. The fewer teams in the conference, the closer you are to the bottom. It's also nice to not face a really good team every week. Every conference has a team(s) that you wonder how they're still in that conference.

Let's not forget, had the Pac-10 stayed at 10 teams and we got invited our exit fee would have been $34 million instead of the $17 million if given longer advance notice. So in 2 years this will allow OSU & WSU to cherry pick which MWC schools they want to add. I can't see them going to 10 members. Only a minimum of 8 members(6 MWC members) if they can get away with it.

Would basically tell a merger is underway. Seems as of now the PAC-2 want to use their two years of conference eligibility to feel out what assets/liabilities are while keeping PAC brand while finding schools to play in bulk. If you're somebody who wants SDSU in any PAC related conference things are progressing... it seems.
