The Padres come out of the All Star Break 43-47 and will be trying to overtake Arizona, San Francisco, Miami, Milwaukee, Cincinnati and Philadelphia for one of the playoff spots. There are 72 games remaining in this season, which means the Padres need to go at least 45-27 to be in the conversation.
A key 4 game series in Philadelphia starts off the second half, does this team respond or flatline?
Musgrove, Wacha, Snell have been effective starters thus far and Manny Machado seems to be waking up. Can the bullpen rally? Can the Padres start hitting? Does Hader, Snell and Lugo go on the trading block?

Does Hader, Snell and Lugo go on the trading block? Pertaining to your last question, at some point it's possible. I've gone out on a limb and said we make a credible run at it, which means maybe no immediate trades. I say we get the Wild Card spot. I like how we've been trending lately.

Not sure 88 wins will be required.

These first few series are important in determining just that. A sweep or two and we will be over .500 and buying will be easy to justify. If we get swept once or twice in the beginning we have to at least listen to selling offers. Because honestly the difference between being 4 games under .500 and 7 games under .500 is enormous with regards to our playoff chances.

Not sure 88 wins will be required. It’s a reasonable number given the past results. Regardless, Soto, Tatis, Machado and company need to make some noise quickly, otherwise this season will be done.

Different playoff format and different regular season composition renders a lot of that moot. I'd be surprised if any team outside of Atlanta approached 100 wins this season.

Padres pick up Ben Gamel, likely for cash or a player to be named later. Gives us some OF depth and a left handed bat at AAA - compliments Azocar as OF depth as a righty at AAA. Any chance Jorge Alfaro opts out with the Red Sox and comes our way? Does Nola get optioned to AAA (does he have any options left)? I guess it depends on Campusano's timeline to an extent.

Alfaro isn't coming here. Campusano should be back within a week or two. Nola does have options.

The Padres lose 3 out of 4 in Philadelphia. This team most likely will not be relevant for the rest of the season.
0-9 in extra inning games, those are tough when there is zero clutch hitting and probably the worst bullpen in the NL.

Heard today that our BP is the worst in baseball in July. We had a 7 run lead in the first game of the series in the 9th inning, but eventually had to use Hader to get out of it with a win, and came from ahead to lose every other game of the series. And we are back to a point where we are just as many games out of a playoff spot (8) as we are from being in last place in the NL. Now 68 games left.

Yeah, I've said the same for several seasons - there's a constant flow of promise, but most of it is just a constant flow of sewage… of course "the numbers" always seemed to tell another story. Until now. And even then, those can be spun up to support just about any rationale. Bottom line is this, as a unit, the relief staff sucks. Part of the problem with this team is all the individual BS. It's a team game, and statistics for that team work strongly suggest a failure in progress right now.

It's looking more and more like we should trade Hader and Snell for some young controllable arms.

As I said a couple of weeks ago, stick a fork in the Pads. Time to start planning for an improved 2024 (which shouldn't be difficult after this debacle of a season).

Unfortunately, it's trending towards what you predicted, but I'm still hopeful for some series sweeps against Detroit and Pittsburgh to give some hope. Need to take 2-3 against Toronto, as well. We'll see.

I hear ya. Hopeless optimist, I am. Bites me in arse too many times to count, being a San Diego fan.

I'd like to see them turn this turd into something more diamond-like, but that takes time and extreme pressure; things they apparently have little of to work with right now. Hell, this team can't even play a spoiler role the way they're rolling right now.

they should sell, organizational depth is horrible. time to replenish some depth, namely pitching and the outfield.
