What good lefty first basemen are out there that are available? And we lose in Coors. We continue to lose to bad teams.. Bad teams continue to beat the Padres. What should that tell us about the Padres? That we are inconsistent and certainly not "good". But it's also hard to call a team that just sweeped the Rangers "bad". Not sure what we are doing buy/sell wise at the deadline, but I will say that if we are buying, I really like the idea of getting Goldschmidt + a reliever or two. Pete Alonso is another name that I like. If we are selling, sell Snell/Lugo/Hader for some MLB ready young arms. Jake Bauers is probably relatively easy to get from the Yankees. Former Pads pick with the Yankees, plenty of years of team control. Mediocre production for 1B at .793 OPS, but he is a Lefty first basemen. Might not be that high of an asking price for him. Bad defender but decent lefty bench bat. Another player that was part of the Turner/Myers trade..

So we're selling? Snell goes, and Rich Hill is a replacement starter?

So we're selling? Snell goes, and Rich Hill is a replacement starter? Hill is 43 years old, although he still can get it done at times. Choi is all right.

Seems like a farce.. a couple of minor leaguers are leaving, at least that’s a roomer. Hill pitched ok against them this past week, didn’t Choi hit a HR? Doesn’t feel newsworthy though, unless they gave away some minor league stars.

So we're selling? Snell goes, and Rich Hill is a replacement starter? For Rivas, and a couple of Minor Leaguers.

We gave up little, while obtaining vets, including an innings eater with Wacha still a week or two away. Provides middle relief options, and an improvement over Carpenter and even Rivas from the left side.
It's not an impact trade but we didn't need to make an impact trade. ESPN gave it a B-, which seems fair. Above average.

This trade really doesn't do much for me, except maybe give us a serviceable option for another starter, instead of reaching down into the minor leagues, and hope that minor leaguer doesn't get lit up before being sent back down.

Really weird trade. I'm going to keep my eye on Wolf, the pitcher they gave up along with 17 year old outfielder Suarez, who is supposed to be good.

Lugo's max is 101 & he's at 89 now. Hill is a more than serviceable option & his experience is always good on the bench. You just made the point for the trade - he's better, or at worst more consistent, than anyone we have in the minors. That alone makes the trade worthwhile, especially when you add a guy with a .900+ OPS over the past month in the mix who's finally (semi) healthy.

Still expect another move before the deadline.
But in related news: Eduardo Rodriguez of Detroit vetoed a deal to Los Angeles.

It's an okay trade in that we aren't giving that much up, and it provides us with a lefty DH bat and rotation depth. Preller must have a lot of faith in the players on this team to close the wild card gap...
