Speaking of SMU, when both of us do join the PAC, I presume they'll be our "rival" on Rivalry Week. I can't imagine the league disrupting the current rivalry format to appease both of us. What are the rivalry game would they switch? All the others are perfect natural rivalries. We won’t have one in the PAC….Fresno St is our natural rival. If we are IN, then the entire PAC is our "natural" rival. The only one that is NOT? SMU.

If and when we enter the PAC, perhaps one of the AZ teams, or Utah, will become our most hated rival. My guess is AZ in basketball, Utah in football.

That would make sense. Us & Utah have the shared hatred of BYU which could be fun for a 'rivalry' matchup with them... where most of the fans just bash BYU instead of each other
Both student sections wearing Red (them) or Black (us) shirts saying: "After further review, BYU still sucks"

OK, I'll make a prediction (guess) that we find out Thursday about the media deal, and shortly thereafter we get the official invite. Bold statement, inside info or guestimating?

I always felt like UNLV was our main rival in the MW, obvs especially in hoops UNLV was always the best fit to be our rival. But we’ve dominated them in basketball for a dozen years. And they’ve had one winning record (7-6) this millennium and haven’t lost less than 5 games in a season since 1984. I’ve always wanted them to be good so we’d have a legit rival. But it never happened. We were a sleeping giant that woke up. They are a giant who died at least 30 years ago and was never resuscitated.

It'll never happen for reasons that have been discussed here ad infinitum, but I still believe the best move for the PAC would be to add 4 teams: Aztecs, SMU, Fresno and UNLV. SMU and UNLV have academic cache. SMU gives the conference better access to Texas recruiting and TV markets. The Aztecs, Fresno and UNLV if not 100% 'capturing' the LA market would put a strangle hold around it. All have strong TV markets that are expanded by the absence of PAC football in the middle. This would also protect / strengthen recruiting in L.A. for the rest of the conference.
Sadly, all that matters is what the networks want.

I've never understood the fascination with UNLV.

Fresno is not our natural rival. They are just something in the rear view mirror. I think Fresno and SJSU are more natural rivals. Not a rival in football. They beat us too often.

Frankly, I would rather the PAC stayed more regional, by adding SDSU and UNLV. SMU is too far east, and the media market in Las Vegas is growing at much faster rate (and is larger) than in the Central Valley.

I think Fresno and SJSU are more natural rivals. Not a rival in football. They beat us too often. 30 Wins 27 losses and 4 ties in the series dating back to 1923.

A rival has to be felt by both sides and although SDSU and it's fans have considered BYU a rival, they never considered us one. They've always had more animosity toward both USU and especially UU than SDSU. We have just been a good tough opponent.
UU won't consider us a rival even as a conference opponent as long as they play BYU every few years. Plus Colorado makes much more sense as a rival to them as they're both the major university in neighboring states and they came into the PAC as the same time. That said, I still believe UU considers BYU to be their rival.
UNLV tried to grow into a rivalry with hoops, but their football team has been so damn bad, it just never materialized.
UA will never be our rival as theirs is ASU. We'll be tough hoops opponents, just like UCLA was (still is for another year) for them, but never a rival.
Disparage the MWC teams that we'll hopefully be leaving behind soon, but FSU is by far our most natural rivalry team. I would hope we'd continue to play them, but I think it'll be a "no win situation" for us if we continue to do so if we join a P5. We're just going to have to make the best of it with SMU or simply not have a rival, which is what I think is best as one can't be artificially made which is what SMU would be for us.
