Only a few hours of "off-season" left to discuss before play counts.
And then, of course, it won't matter if they win or lose because, hey, it's too early in the season to matter…
I say every game they lose now they'll regret later. L.A. hasn't gone away, and San Francisco isn't going to roll over, either.
The one huge point of variability that hasn't really been talked about much should be the so-called balanced schedule this season featuring a significant reduction of divisional meetings (from 76 to 52 almost 1/3 fewer meetings) and a doubling (from 20 to 42 games) of interleague games Guaranteed meetings with some pretty non-competitive teams from both leagues should generally help the Padres record this season, but it will also help their strongest opponents just as well.
Whether it's good for baseball remains to be seen. It'll probably take a few years to fully evaluate the changes this scheduling brings to the game.

As I said in the other thread, the scheduling is dumb. How I would do it: 18 games with each of the other teams in your division (72). 9 home/9 away. 6 games against each of the other teams in your league (60). 3 home/3 away. 6 games against all teams from a division in the other league (30). 3 home/3 away. All teams from a division (example, NL West would play AL West in a season) will play all the same teams in the other league's division, and the divisions rotate every season (west, central and east). There is your 162 game season.

My main question is who really benefits from the new scheduling? Do I care if I see Washington (we have Soto, so who've they got worth watching?), Pittsburgh (unless we want to see if Bryan Reynolds implodes on the field, maybe), Cincinnati (they'll lose another 100 games this season, easily), Oakland (their best move ever was sending their manager to us), Colorado (besides Buddy Black and Jerkson Profart, who cares what they do, they'll still be fighting with Arizona D-Bags for sole possession of the bottom of the NL West).
Maybe it looks different for those teams' fans, though, getting to see NYY, Houston, and other high powered teams. It'd just make me mad if I was a fan of one of those teams and had to watch those teams come in smacking their lips… knowing that my team's ownership didn't really give a rat's AZZZZZZtec to spend any money on my team to make it more competitive.
Oh well, we'll see how this plays out. It'll definitely be easier to fix than some of the other "changes" that've been made this season - if this one doesn't work out well. And then we'd need to define what would make it work out well. I don't see too many ways - at least from a Padres' fan's perspective.

Snell K's 9 but throws lots of pitches in his opener. Then Crismatt comes in and clears the bases. Just like old times…

Some pretty unfortunate bounces thus far tonight.

Rockies will soon run out of pitching. Marquez is their best, but he won't be around much longer with 85 pitches already thrown. Their BP is not up to the task… but the Padres' BP doesn't look any better so far. Tapia. WTF? Horrible BP performances so far tonight. Tapia finally gets an out after giving up B2B HRs and a double, and immediately gave up a SB moving the runner to 3rd.
Boo birds are already out in force. Ugh 7–2. This was not in the script.
Maybe Dinelson will do his "thing" and Padres will catch a break.

Some pretty unfortunate bounces thus far tonight. You mean like the ball that was hit to Kim that he booted😩 A couple of balls that probably should've been played better (Soto, Bogarts), but nothing that really cost them runs. That was the BP tonight. Chief arsonists: Crismatt and Tapia.

The only two numbers that matter right now are 7 and 2…

Not what one would call an auspicious beginning to the season.
Luckily, the pressure is now off on going 162-0 this year, and there are still 161 games left to play - and win - this season.
