——Starting pitching depth is a close second, but Fernando Tatis Jr. is the single variable that could most dramatically swing the Padres’ fortunes. How effective will he be as he returns from suspension and multiple surgeries on his left arm? How long will he go before he sustains an injury? Where, exactly, will he settle in on defense? If Tatis is the Tatis of old, the Padres may have unmatched offensive firepower. If he struggles to stay on the field or shake off the rust, a top-heavy roster may be set up for massive disappointment. For Tatis, this could be a telling spring. — Dennis Lin theathletic.com/4155146/2023/02/13/mlb-spring-training-questions-for-each-team/?source=user_shared_articleThe team’s depth options include Jay Groome, Brent Honeywell Jr., Reiss Knehr, Adrian Morejon, Julio Teheran and Ryan Weathers. All of them have looked OK so far in camp, but only Knehr and Weathers pitched in the majors last season, and they combined for 17 1/3 innings. In any event, the Padres will need at least one of these pitchers to step up. The Padres perhaps were fortunate that Darvish and Musgrove did not miss a start last season (and that Snell also stayed healthy after a groin injury delayed his debut). Replacing the innings provided by Sean Manaea, Mike Clevinger and MacKenzie Gore always figured to be a challenge. Signing Wacha certainly looks prescient now. — Lin Yep, will Tatis be the guy that helps take them over the hump and get to, and win a WS this year? He's the X Factor.

Probably the deepest pitching they've ever had, if Musgrove has to miss a start or two. I bet they just push back the rotation and he misses maybe one start. I don’t disagree with the depth part. I should have clarified. I meant the back end is good but doesn’t exactly scare opposing teams, so Yu has to be an ace and Snell needs to be good Blake and not WTF Blake. I think that was true with or without Musgrove, but the difference is the offense is going to be insanely improved and you have a really, really good bullpen to cap it off.

And let’s not kid ourselves……anyone doubt Seidler is going to really restrict AJ at the summer trade deadline when an SP opportunity arises?

Well, SD and CLE have been trade partners for years —- maybe Bieber is dangled if the Tribe has a bad first half. 😉

Completely agree, I think now is the time to stop making big trades and focus on building a cheap, controllable group that can balance out Tatis/Machado/Soto/Darvish/Musgrove and the Padres top-heavy payroll.

Interesting. I doubt he’ll ever be a 7.00+ WAR player again but if he can average 5.0 WAR at least until late 30’s, it won’t be a complete disaster. He’ll be 34 when that $35m per season starts kicking in so they better hope they have a solid farm system at that time. "In the short term, the backloaded nature of the contract and the distributed/deferred nature of the signing bonus will provide San Diego with some additional payroll flexibility, though the year-to-year structure of the deal doesn’t impact the luxury tax hit, which is still purely based on the contract’s average annual value. That said, the lower salaries up front will dovetail both with Juan Soto’s remaining club control (through 2024) and with the eventual decrease in salary on Yu Darvish’s more frontloaded extension.” As a Cleveland fan (and SDP!), I am very grateful Jose Ramirez badly wanted to remain a Guardian. In my opinion, J-Ram is a very slightly superior player (its close) so boy, am I thankful he insisted on the extension to his agent and wanted to stay. Relative bargain, overall. Imminent free agent 3B’s like Matt Chapman are about to get overpaid. You have to admire Seidler's fierce commitment to a championship. Ramirez only became a bargain because he took less money to stay, Cleveland was never going to get to $200M+. Bad decision on his part economically, but money isn't everything to some guys. The only reason Manny may not be able to duplicate last year is the metrics see his defense in decline. Range-based numbers don't like his lateral movement, although I still think he's better than Arenado comprehensively. We have Tatis and Bogaerts, one of them can move to the hot corner and Machado can be a right fielder in a couple of years.

Padres sign Rougned Odor to a minor League deal. He'll compete for the backup of Kim. Bench role. The deal is pending a physical. Not a bad pick up. He has some pop in his bat.

I guess I missed his part of the statement saying he wasn't going to play for the Padres after this season. All he did say was he was opting out of his current contract. He could very easily decide to stay here with a different contract. He could. Will he, though? How many guys opt out and stay with their current teams? They usually opt out because their current teams won't pay them what they want. If he really wanted to stay he could just have said, "I could opt out, and I still might, but I'd rather renegotiate a new deal including an extension with the Padres." He was rather adamant about opting out. Emphatic about it. Why should someone take less than what they are worth? To help build a championship team? To make sure that they have the strongest, deepest roster possible? Manny already has a phenomenal contract. He could honor it, or work with the team on a renegotiated contract with an extra year or something, but, instead, he's opting out. I was under the impression that he was a team guy. But he's like 99% of the players in the league. "Machado and the Padres continued talking, even past Feb. 16. Still, it was clearly important to Machado that a deal get done before the start of the season -- and preferably before he left to join Team Dominican Republic at the World Baseball Classic. "That was one of the reasons why we did have a deadline -- not just for myself, but out of respect for my teammates," Machado said. "To answer that question every single day and have that continue to linger on, it's a big elephant in the room. I wanted this team to be focused on our goal this year, which is to win a championship." Sure sounds like a team guy to me.

Me, too. Looks like his, "I'm definitely opting out," was just a negotiating ploy/tactic.

He is a strike out waiting to happen and not a high obp guy either. Preller giving another one of his old Ranger pals a look.
