The Padres need an outfielder and some bullpen help. Mazara, Grisham, Myers, Profar, all of these guys are average to below average right now. I wouldn’t count on Tatis playing too much in the OF when he returns unless he has some limitations on his throwing or running. If they hope to stand toe to toe with the Dodgers in a playoff series, Soto would be a huge help. He is very young with time still on his contract. And he is the league’s best hitter. Right now the pen is very unreliable. Bring in a righty with a lights out change up. Obviously I was stating the obvious, but I’m glad to see every one of my boxes have been checked.

I cover prospects. Nobody loves prospects more than I do. Obsessively. I follow every game at every level. I love James Wood. Love him. I've been a Gore truther since he was drafted into Peoria. This is not a gamble. Juan Soto is a top three player in baseball. The team that gets the superstar wins this deal every single time. Juan Soto will be extended. He will definitely be signed to a long-term deal by someone--but I have my doubts it will be the Padres. And the two teams that always get these guys eventually - NYY and LAD - will likely get Soto, too. Maybe not, but paying a half BILLION dollar player is probably not in the Padres' future. But I'll never say never…

I cannot believe, on my birthday, that I'm typing this. Juan Soto has a deal in principle with the San Diego Padres. Happy birthday 🎂 Ryan!

Definitely a day that will live in Padres Lore forever - so it'll always be easy for you to remember it.

To put this into proper perspective and give some kind of context, this is about a FIFTEEN percent jump in playoff odds. It's like going from a replacement level, Jose Azocar type in center field and replacing him with Mike Trout from a WAR perspective.
The Padres went from 82.0% to make the playoffs two days ago...to over 97% today.

Annd something I think that's worth mentioning to dispel the myth about trading assets and where the farm stands:
The bonanza in 2020 where the Padres traded over half of their top 30 prospects and over two dozen prospects in all?
In TWO years, AJ Preller and Chris Kemp were able to rebuild the farm to trade for Juan Soto, Josh Hader, Josh Bell and Brandon Drury. TWO years.
And this is the second time AJ has done that two year feat.

I'm all in with AJ Preller. He's done a tremendous job. Even If these trades don't work out, which I HIGHLY doubt won't, I would not blame Preller. He goes for it!!! He's creative. He makes things happen and doesn't seem to bankrupt the team, depth/future wise, in the minor league system.
He has BALLS. He has the guts to take chances. I love it!!! We want to win NOW, and you have to keep up with the Dodgers, and Giants if you want to have a chance to win a World Series. He gets it.
I also want to add that Peter Seidler is the man, also!!! AJ can't make these deals without his blessing, so kudos to him, as well. I love how Seidler views San Diego as the 8th largest city in the Country, rather than a small market team, and it shows.

From Jayson Stark:
“THE MAGIC NUMBER — 160
Soto’s career OPS+ is 160. In other words, when you adjust for his era, league and home ballpark, he’s been 60 percent more productive than the average hitter in the majors over the last five seasons. He’s 23! Who does that?
Glad you asked. I checked. These are the only hitters in the modern era with an OPS+ higher than Soto’s through their age-23 season (and at least 2,000 plate appearances):
Ted Williams, 190 Ty Cobb, 171 Mike Trout, 169 Albert Pujols, 165
THE MAGIC NUMBER — 23
Soto is 23 years old. I counted 20 players in the Futures Game who were older than him. Those 20 players haven’t even started their major-league careers yet. Soto just got traded for the half the population of La Jolla.
GENERATIONAL TALENT? YES

Monday and Tuesday were great days in the history of the Padres--especially Tuesday.
But all of that great news was tempered by the passing of Vin Scully last night, at the age of 94.

Vin, wow —what an absolutely epic life. I mean, broadcasting ever since the 50s. Drysdale, Koufax, Jackie Robinson, he saw it all.
Loved listening to Vin.

The brain is an amazing thing. I can hear Vinnie say just about anything at any time - at least in my head. Probably comes from all those nights listening to him and the Doggers on KFI - Los Angeles - as a kid. Yes, the Padres also got their share of late night, radio under the pillow, attention, but they were minor league. I can even hear him voice some of John Wooden's best quotes - though I wish I could hear those in Coach Wooden's voice.
Two men who changed their sports for the better, always had time for others, exemplified the best of humanity, and left things on earth far better than they found them.
