The reality is that there is zero reason for the B1G to be in any rush to add Washington/Oregon. They knocked the Pac down by taking USC and UCLA and that's good enough for now. Washington and Oregon aren't joining the SEC and that's the only conference that can challenge the B1G for conference supremacy.
Next up is the ACC and unlike the PAC the B1G will need to battle it out with the SEC for those schools.
Obviously if ND becomes available then they instantly jump on that and if that happens then who knows if that would be a solo add or if they would want to add other schools as well (if I had to guess Stanford would be the pairing).

Story in "The Athletic" today quoting a lot from the Univ of Illinois Chancellor when questioned about possible further BIG10 expansion. This Chancellor is also the chair of the BIG10's Council of Presidents and Chancellors. "We’re doing analysis, the cost, the benefits of staying at 16 or moving up. It’s not something we’re going to do just to react to what other conferences may choose to do. We’re only going to do what’s best for our current membership, and there has to be some value added for expanding beyond.” "He said the conference has not decided whether it would only add future schools as full members, which earn the exact same share of media rights revenue as the existing members. “We don’t have a position on that yet,” Jones said. He reiterated that the league would need to know that any additional schools bring enough value to make such a move worthwhile. He said it would be a “data-driven decision that aligns with the vision of where we want to see the conference in the next decade and the decades beyond.”It certainly sounds like Oregon, Washington, Stanford and/or Cal are still on the table down the road. It would make more sense that their conference have a whole Western Division instead of just UCLA and USC. I read this a bit differently. It's a warning. He's telling Oregon, Washington, Cal, Stanford, etc. to make themselves worth it or if we invite you don't expect the same deal everyone else gets. As much as a Western Division makes sense to us, the B1G doesn't really need one. USC is no longer the big swingin D**k in their conference, that belongs to Ohio St., and Michigan. The entire travel onus is on USC/UCLA, so what if the midwestern schools have to travel to So. Cal every couple of years or less? Just treat it like a early season non-conference game or a bowl game. Basketball and the Olympic sports make a weekend trip and play both schools on Fri./Sunday. It might suck for Maryland and Rutgers but so what? A Western Conference isn't really needed for the B1G to function. On the other hand it's a huge deal for USC/UCLA but the power center of their new conference resides in the Midwest. IMO in their quest for financial gain they gave up a lot of leverage. They need the B1G not the other way around.

But the irony of Illinois talking about the value other universities and or musing about these institutions taking smaller share is very entertaining. Can imagine telling UW with a straight face that they can join but have take a smaller share than Rutgers, Illinois, Indiana, northwestern, Purdue, and Maryland. I just want expansion to end.

I agree. While it makes no sense to us in So. Cal, it appears that being conference mates for 125 years comes with privileges. I'm ready for expansion to end as well. The Pac12 is the premier western conference, the remaining schools should make that ironclad for the next 50 years. They should require every school to make minimum investments to improve. NIL, coaches salaries, facilities etc. Make themselves impenetrable to being poached. Once Texas and OU go to the SEC, the Big12 will essentially be SEC country. A fortified Pac12 could then poach the Big12 in the next round by taking schools like TCU and Kansas, and if they wanted to get to 16 swallow hard and take Baylor and Rice as well. Of course and to quote Stan "it all depends in the money." ETA: SDSU and SMU get them back to 12.

Of course and to quote Stan "it all depends in the money." ETA: SDSU and SMU get them back to 12. I have a question: Is it possible for the PAC to survive as a principally west coast conference over the long term? I recognize that Colorado and Utah (and potentially SMU) expand the conference beyond the coast but consider: The population of the west coast, less the LA Metro area, is about 40 million -- and that's if Oregon, Washington, Stanford and Cal don't leave. The population of the midwest is 68 million (81 mil if you include the LA metro area) The population of the southeast is 80 million. It "feels like" the PAC is in danger of being oversaturated in a shrinking footprint -- and therefore that it will be unlikely for them to be able to compete for the national championship. It "feels like" they have a desperate need to expand east while, at the same time, their academic arrogance is preventing them from doing so to any measurable degree. To me, the biggest reason to not add Fresno isn't our academics; it's the fact that we would add to that oversaturation problem, rather than alleviate it. But I don't see anybody in the Big 12 that would even consider joining the PAC. So how is this going to end?

But I don't see anybody in the Big 12 that would even consider joining the PAC. So how is this going to end? The only danger to the Pac is themselves. There will always be a need for a western college conference, as long as they stay together they will always run $#!+. The ACC is the next to go, maybe the the Big12 combines with whats left but at that point both conferences will have lost their best schools and will be confined to forever play in the shadow of the SEC and B1G. A fortified Pac12 plucks whatever they desire from whats left, any school remaining in the Big12 will jump at the chance, effectively making the P5 a P3. At that point your demographics are irrelevant, kinda like they are now. College sports transcended being regional long ago. An alum can watch their school anytime they want nowadays from literally any place in the world. As an example my daughter was recruited and is committed to playing lacrosse in college out of state, I will be able to stream everyone of her games I cant attend in person, thats WOMENS LACROSSE. How much more will football and basketball be accessible? It's one of the reasons I actually like Apple and Amazon being the frontrunners for the PAC contract, IMO within the next decade nearly all TV programming will be ala carte/streaming, the Pac should embrace being the forerunners to the changing viewing landscape. Edit: Another example. Just fired Tucker Carlson averaged 3 million viewers a night, dude posts a two minute clip on Twitter thats gets 70 million plus views in a little over 24 hours. The times are changing.

The only danger to the Pac is themselves. There will always be a need for a western college conference, as long as they stay together they will always run $#!+. But will it be competitive with other conferences. Add the MWC and the PAC together and you've got 22-24 schools chasing the talent in the least populated region in the country -- least populated by a mile. I just have my doubts... Understand, that's not a PAC issue.

What you're describing has been the situation forever, so nothing changes just because two schools will play most of their games in the midwest. If you think the B1G can now recruit SoCal because USC/UCLA joined them it's only fair the Pac12 can recruit Texas because SMU joins.

This is not surprising at all. We have known this since November. Yes we did. What we do NOT know is whether or not Washington and Oregon are secretly negotiating their own media deal to go independent. Just as we knew nothing about escape plans of USC and UCLA.

New Mexico is a new Pac-12 Expansion Candidate? Really? What has UNM accomplished athletically in football and basketball (of significance) over the past 20 years? Tulane & Rice offer so much more academically, and UNM and Rice have been bottom dwellers athletically in football. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bimm2kAdSd8

Big XII Expansion to Include Fresno State?Doesn't think we are a factor in Big 12 expansion but discusses SDSU to the Big 12 as possible. Mostly posting because the video includes some outtakes from a Brett Yormark video interview including what he meant by "open for business". Link ==> www.youtube.com/watch?v=8T8b30Iq5yk
