It's of interest that no amount of coaching seems to have helped Snell so far with his command issues. What is Rothschild doing? Do they sit down and watch tape? Do they compare these tapes with tapes from 2018 - when Snell was having an apparently once-in-a-lifetime season? Are they seeing where his arm slots now and where it slotted then? Are they analyzing why the curve and change up are missing the mark? Or are they just hoping that he'll "catch up with that dog" and everything will suddenly get better. Not counting on it given what we've all seen so far, but I'm hoping he's at least getting some good advice … whether or not he takes it is another topic. he was a guy early on that looked to me like he benefited from the old rules, this is a guy who is also affected by what is between the ears

For a guy with his arm strength, he should almost be able to just stand on the mound and throw. I think the pitching has gotten into his head.

Maybe his 82 Gold rating on The Show '21 - which he considers disrespectful - will make him angry enough to make the changes he needs to make? Not counting on it given what we've all seen so far, but I'm hoping he's at least getting some good advice … whether or not he takes it is another topic. Got to wonder how much of it is in-between the ears.

The results tonight look much better than Snell's actual appearance. Base-runners in every inning, too many pitches (105) and those that missed were not close - still, he got through 5 innings giving up only one run (a HR). Luck was definitely on his side tonight, but he also had some great defense behind him and an actual offense to thank tonight.

Snell has openly admitted to some mental health issues which have contributed to his struggles this season. The stuff is as good as ever, it's about dialing in adjustments and keeping the team in the game, which he did tonight.

He also got several swing and misses at key moments in the game when he needed them. I'll take a performance like that any day.

The starting pitching ERA was 5.97 for the month of July. That's just truly awful.
Will need to see a big change in that, to take this team serious in the playoffs. That's just being realistic, not negative.

He definitely battled out there and made key pitches, and got outs when needed. He can't continue with this trend though, since it will catch up to him.

So far, this is a very different Snell than what we've been seeing lately. Hitting his spots, firing away, getting swings, striking out batters. He just looks different out there. Confident.
And then the play at SS… could this be an epic afternoon for Snell and the Padres?
Stay tuned…

Well, it was epic until it wasn't. Getting through almost 5 innings of a no-no is definitely a huge step in the right direction, even if it is Arizona - because despite their lowly position in MLB, they've already shown that they can handle the Padres.
Keep it rolling, because the Giants and Dodgers just keep winning… and now, the Reds are joining them.
Ties a PB of 13K, so maybe it's not the no-no, but today's performance is coming in a very close second…

Snell didn't really bounce a breaking ball (that is, one really out in front of the plate) until pitch 41 today.
Great outing. Even the breaking pitches he was bouncing drew swings from the D-back hitters.

Decent appearance for Snell tonight; he just didn't get any offensive support. He also didn't benefit from going deep into counts, it really jacked up his pitch count. As far as the offense goes, they're still struggling just to get runs across.

Ditto. Snell's 9K in 5 innings is noteworthy, only two walks, but both of them scored. Suffered through the third inning again, but didn't completely fall apart this time. >90 pitches thrown again; I guess this is progress…

Little bit unlucky to give up three runs on 9K/2H/2BB. Only one of the walks scored by the way - walk, double, homerun scored three runs.

But you're right, his second scored run was after a walk by Pagan.

Another good start overall though. This was lost at the plate not on the mound unfortunately.

Yes, never any fun to get beaten by your own team. While the pick-off throw that Cronenworth muffed was a tiny bit off target it was close enough, and that error ended up resulting in the run that made it a 4-3 game. When you're scuffling, every error gets magnified, every missed AB opportunity gets magnified. Several 0-fers last night that ended up making a difference in the outcome.
