Gore has gone 5 innings in today's game. A bit unusual for a starter to go 5. Has thrown 88 pitches, and gave up 2 runs in the 5th. All in all, a good outing.

And if Gore is done after 5, he is in line for the win, as Peoria has just scored 3 in the top of the 6th to go back in front 5-2.

And...Gore gets Pagan'd by the bullpen. Loses the chance for a win, then Peoria loses in the bottom of the 9th, 6-5.
At least Gore pitched well today.

Were you there today? No, but heard from a few evaluators that were. Torkelson got him for the two run double after looking bad on a pair of changeups. Pretty good hitter, though. The velocity coming back is a good sign, he was sitting 95 for the entirety of the start and actually threw all four of his pitches. Positive building block.

"Padres lefty MacKenzie Gore has been a cipher throughout 2021, coming into the year as the top pitching prospect in the minors but struggling so much with command and control that the Padres returned him to their spring training camp in Peoria to try to rework his arm action and just get him to hit the reset button. He started the first game in the Arizona Fall League on Wednesday, and if you’d walked in with no knowledge of his history, you’d probably wonder what all the fuss was about. Gore’s stuff was just about as good as ever on Wednesday, as he was 93-98 for his entire outing and hitting a lot of spots around the edges of the zone with the fastball. His slider and changeup were both plus, while the curveball was more of a grade 55 (above-average) pitch than the plus or plus-plus weapon I’ve seen from him before. His arm action is much shorter now, although the high leg kick is still there, and his overall tempo is faster, within the delivery and between pitches — he looks like someone who can’t wait to throw the next pitch, which is good to see from someone who’s had a hard time throwing strikes. Gore threw 88 pitches, 56 for strikes, with the automated strike zone in play at Salt River Fields, which tends to result in a smaller strike zone than we normally see from human umps. A little bit different outing for Gore in his 2nd start in the AFL yesterday:
1.1 innings, 2 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 0 K's, and 5 BB. 54 pitches, and only 26 strikes.

Boy, if he can't get through guys at this level, how is he ever going to pitch in MLB next year? At least Matt Bush pitched in the big leagues for a while, even if he was a different kind of head case. I feel sorry for the kid but don't hold much hope for him.

He may not make it to the majors, but that doesn't make him a head case.

If you supposedly have that much natural talent but can't use it when it counts, that can qualify as a "head case". It doesn't mean he's a bad or weak person, it just means he's probably more "in his head" than he should be.

MacKenzie's already back at Petco right now working with Niebla as we speak. They are doing some resistance/motion exercises in the bullpen. Hopefully the team gives Niebla carte blanche here.

Threw strikes, had good secondaries and velocity. All you can ask for in outing #1.

"Ah, the perils of prospect fatigue. Much has been documented about MacKenzie Gore’s fall from prospect stardom, but I’m still bullish on his future outlook as this ranking indicates. After turning in one of the most dominant seasons in California League history in 2019, lofty expectations and comparisons were put forth, perhaps unfairly. The soon to be 23-year-old North Carolinian blends elite athleticism on the mound with a dynamic repertoire that includes multiple above average or better secondary offerings and a mid-90s fastball. While the command took a sizable step backward in 2021 coming out of the pandemic, the raw stuff is still very much present. More importantly, the desire to be truly great is something Gore possesses in spades. There’s less room for error than there was two years ago, a firm reminder that prospect development is far from a linear process, but there’s still frontline starter potential here. Gore figures to battle for a big league rotation spot when spring training commences."
Battle, indeed.

Gore today: 3 innings, 1 hit, 5 K's. 1 batter over the minimum.
