“I am standing right here beside myself!” Malachi, Malachi, Malachi, Malachi, Malachi!!!!!
Iowa was introduced to the “Malachi Crunch”....(I think the old timers will get that reference)...

That could have got so out of control in the first half. That late little run to get it under 10 points was absolutely crucial to the eventual win. It wasn't any big secret what they were doing wrong: Ball security and boxing out was atrocious; Dutch could correct that at half. Once he/they did... Game on! I think it did get a bit out of hand in the first half! Down 16....I turned to my buddy and said if we get it to under 10 at half we have a chance. And the boys almost got it within a few points before half. IMPRESSIVE GAME!!

Coach Dutcher must have given a stellar motivation speech during halftime. The Aztecs exploded! Nice games from Flynn, Wetzell, Shackel and Mitchell. Aztecs......best team in Cali. Dutcher Haters........you know. I think Dutch finally put the right mix of players on the floor in the second half. Coaching was huge in this one.....playing the right guys at the right moments was a huge help in turning around that game. I was thrilled with coach’s personnel decisions in the second half.

Casey Jacobsen doing color - CA guy, Stanford. He’s really good and has done his homework on the Aztecs Son of Von Jacobsen, Aztec basketball player from early 70's.

I like to read the boards of opponents just to see how their fans view us.
I was shocked at the number of Iowa fans who not only had respect for SDSU as a program but they knew a lot about this team pre-game.
During the game, they noted how athletic and skilled our guys are without the back-handed for a mid-major qualifier.
I saw no "I can't believe we lost to a mid-major" nonsense after the game too.
I thought that was cool coming from BIG fans

I got -1.5 this morning but I assume more money came down on the Aztecs so the line had to move. I’m staying away from this line. Not super confident in -3 and I’ll never bet against the Aztecs. I didn't bet against the Aztecs, I took them and gave up 1.5 points to Iowa.

Iowa was spending a lot of energy on defense and hit far more than their share of contested shots in the first half. Things were bound to even out and they did. Our depth really ground them down. Gritty win for our Aztecs. Having this one in their belts will really pay dividends during tight conference games or the MW Tournament. Iowa doesn't have the depth to keep up the intensity for 2 games in 2 days. What I see about the Aztecs is their ability to shoot foul shots. No more of those 10 point leads getting whittled away at the end of games with missing the front of a 1 and 1 or clanking the 1st of 2. No more having 3 players you couldn't pass the ball to because the other team would foul them right away.

Then in the last 3 games, they've gone 48-54 (89%)!!! We're over 70% now as a team.

We have so many ways to score the BB. Malachi, Jordan and KJ all have to be given respect from beyond the arc. Wetzell is really establishing himself as an inside presence and playing against Iowa, who are used to playing against good big men, and doing well is certainly impressive. Nate is athletic enough that you can't really double team Wetzell who made some excellent passes in Vegas for easy layup opportunities. Then you got Mitchell coming off the bench who brings a different, more physical dimension to the 3.
Then you've got someone like Pulliam who is most definitely more of a pass first guard. Arop comes in with energy and defense though still a bit raw offensively. And, I cannot say enough about Seiko. Both Feagin and Malachi started slow and Malchi got a couple of quick fouls so Seiko comes in and helps keep the game from getting out of control. His minutes in the two games helped keep our starters fresh and that will be something very important come conference tournament time..
Would like to see a bit more from J. Mensah and Johnson for more depth at the forward position and have to wonder if Narain is still not healthy or just not good enough to break into the rotation.
And our defense is playing with more intensity than we've seen the last few years.

Johnson is a freshman and, as expected, plays like a freshman frequently. However, it looks like he's got the ability to really improve. But we probably won't see the benefits until next year. With our depth, his minutes will be limited this year.
There seems to be a total black out on information about Narain. I heard early in the season that he was recovering from some injury, but nothing in a long time. I don't think it's because he hasn't been able to break into the rotation because of ability. He didn't even get into games where the walk-ons played. Curious.

Swap out Mensah for Matt. There are starting line ups ... and then ... There are finishing line ups. That’s was freaking awesome Mensah will be fine!

Something I noticed, the unsung heroes are the second teamers, J Mensah, Seiko who helped stop the bleeding in the first half and closed the Iowa lead to a manageable 9 pts at the break. Iowa was up by 16 with 4:00 left, these guys along with Mitchell and Shackle went on an 8-2 run just before the half.
After that, it was the Flynn show. Nice win all around, replay showing now on FS 1.
