Police Departments around the State (can't speak to other states), stopped responding to low level shop-lifting calls LONG AGO. That's nothing new. It boiled down to managing calls for service. I won't go into a long diatribe about the issue, but essentially PD's were spending millions of tax dollars/staff time on issues that resulted in little to no results in the court systems, and stores already had loss built into their pricing. These types of calls are LOW PRIORITY and it would be hours before police could even show up anyway (suspect is long gone, garbage video systems, etc meant nobody would be arrested unless a positive ID could be made...which was almost 0% of the time). So, these smash and grabs are at a level where it would still be impossible for PD's to actively respond to these calls anyway (and they happen so quickly). It basically becomes incumbent on stores to take additional precautionary measures to make these smash/grabs much harder to accomplish. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is the model the department I worked at used to work with 7-11's/CircleK/Target/Walmart/etc to slow down/stop beer dashes/thefts. NOT having cases of beer at the entrance to the store significantly reduced the numbers of these types of calls....keeping expensive stuff behind the counter...etc. If you make it harder for the criminals to steal, they won't. Just like vehicle break-ins...dirtbags won't bust into a car if there is nothing visible for them to steal. We would run big PR campaigns during Christmas to remind people to not leave presents and personal belongings in the vehicle in plain site. It's not hard to do. I won't go into a long diatribe. Promptly goes into a long distribe. Lol. I agree with you on a lot of what you said. I think there's a lot more of this going on, but not as widely reported if it's not a large group. |

just a note on the sophistication level of some of these car break-ins. My friend's car in SF had $30,000 worth of underwater camera equipment in it. He was pretty savvy and started calling dive shops to see if there were any leads. A local dive shop bought the equipment for $100 , knowing it had to be hot. So he ended up getting his gear back. definitely low lives and generally not pros.

The problem is..you never have a take. You throw stones from a distance, and troll. I grew up in the Bay Area and parts of Oakland and San Francisco were not safe even in 1970. I came out of a concert venue one night in 1972, and every car window was broken, on both sides, for 2 whole blocks. Mental health institutions throughout California were closed in the early 80's. Sheer population increase and lack of public services foretold this future long, long ago. It's easy to sit at home and watch right wing TV all day. Do you ever add a personal observation that is interesting or add something anecdotal that piques the interest? How bout a potential solution to any issue you see out there? You bore the hell out of me. |
