Yes, I agree. With the internet there's more to tell, so to speak. I grew up in the San Marcos/Escondido area and we never locked our doors in the 60's and 70's. If you don't lock your doors now, you're crazy, and just asking for it. That's just one example of how times have changed. There were certainly areas, back then, that you stayed away from, for sure. Don't give out my address, but I still leave my front door and car unlocked...but not that often and I pick my spots!..live in Poway..quiet street. I think I watched too many Datelines, etc.... Lol. But, I personally would still lock my car, and house if I lived in gated home with Security. That's just me though. I'm so grateful to have grown up when I did. No cell phones. Played outside until it got dark, or when Mom called us in. Always an adventure.

youtu.be/ztFJyX7FZHQIt's getting to the point that it seems like California Democrats want this to continue. Critical mass and carrying capacity were exceeded sometimes in the mid 70's or so. Too many people. Look historically, but this is on a grander scale. Name one place in the World that is better now than it was 40 years ago? I expect a slow, steady decline. Other than that, if you were the mayor of a large California City, you would do what?

Defund the police, cashless bail, decriminalizing shoplifting……Democrat ideals gone predictably bad, and people like Gov Newsome are shocked when this kind of thing becomes commonplace? Idiot.
Sorry, but these people are just a bunch of GD thieves. Governor Newsome should probably resign.

Well, all of the police funding in the world is useless if the politicians calling the shots issue stand down orders. That’s what we are seeing here. In today’s upside down political climate, no cops are going to risk their careers, pensions or personal freedom by busting a few skulls open. The democrats and the democrat media have completely neutered our cops with over regulation. That’s why our streets, stores, malls are under siege. The Democrat Party and their idiotic policies own this issue 100%. To say otherwise is just plain wrong and demented.

Come on...if he would do 2 seconds of research, he would immediately know how wrong he is on just about all of his talking points. But I did 10 minutes of research and I'll help everyone out: Far from "Crime is at an all time high!", California's crime rates for property crime rates are actually at all time low's...and violent crimes rates, while inching up since historic lows of the mid-2010's, are still in line with the "good old days" of the late 60's. I took the liberty of color coding the years with Red for Rep Governor, and Blue for Democratic Governor. Of course, there are LOTS of factors that determine what goes into raising/lowering crime rates, and not everything can be so neatly tied to whichever party is in office. Some things are economic in nature, some are changes in how enforcement is done (proactive enforcement pushes in the mid/late 2000's probably had some of the most profound effects on crime rates), etc. As always, perception of crime becomes reality, especially in the crazy social media/24 hours news sensationalism world we live in. Of course, you can live in fear based on balderdash and let it affect your life, or realize we're living in some of the safest times in the last 50 years. Lock your doors, don't leave a bunch of stuff visible in your vehicle, and just take common sense precautions. Have a nice day!!

I have friends who are police officers in Burbank and Los Angeles who tell me the rules of contact and laws have been changed over the past decade, clearly favoring perps. We have not had stores brazenly looted like this recent memory. Every store who gets hit represents a family whose income and livelihood has been destroyed. They pay taxes for police protection, and are clearly not protected. The confidence of the public has been shaken. calmatters.org/commentary/2023/07/crime-increase-california-fears-justified/Even Gov Newsom is concerned.

They say the exact opposite. So, Gov Newsom is concerned. The retail stores are concerned, but the thieves are not, because if they keep the larceny under $900, ‘they cool’. This will continue for only so long before retail stores just pack up and get out of LA and SF, in fact it’s been happening pretty regularly the past couple of years. abcnews.go.com/US/san-franciscos-retail-exodus-crime-experts/story?id=101100884#:~:text=The%20slew%20of%20closures%20of,Francisco%20Standard%20found%20in%20May. The only way you stop this is to grab the thieves, pistol whip them a few times and toss them in jail for 12 weeks. It seems like our cops have forgotten how to do that or the state policies won’t allow it. A wise person once said “you reap what you sow.” This is what Californians voted for, but I suppose Californians needed to experience the negative effect of liberal policies before they fully learned the lesson.

So, the only answer is "pistol whipping"? Even you know that's dumb. Cameras everywhere now, put a 45 year old shoplifting lady on TV getting pistol whipped, and you've got a riot. I think SF is in trouble if the retailers and hotels leave. However, the reasons are complex, including a downtown where offices remain empty because people never went back to work after covid. The issues in SF and Oakland go so much deeper than "the liberals"..but as usual, your points on here are not very deep.

Retail has been dying for over a decade. I live a block away from a mall. It's a ghost town...and it has nothing to do with shoplifting. You're seriously going to insinuate that the police don't have the power? Lol.

Includes more than retail. I know a lot about the Bay Area and grew up there. The broad daylight car break-ins are off the scale. My colleague had all his camera gear stolen in 15 minutes. There are issues there. I think it has to do with critical mass and societal breakdown. The issues are not made up.

The truth is more complicated than "liberal policies" and "blame Newsom." The pandemic has changed a lot of socioeconomic conditions and has exposed societal change. It's made people more aggressive, it's made people less afraid of authority. Inequality has widened. It's not just a politically-induced outcome.

Police Departments around the State (can't speak to other states), stopped responding to low level shop-lifting calls LONG AGO. That's nothing new. It boiled down to managing calls for service. I won't go into a long diatribe about the issue, but essentially PD's were spending millions of tax dollars/staff time on issues that resulted in little to no results in the court systems, and stores already had loss built into their pricing. These types of calls are LOW PRIORITY and it would be hours before police could even show up anyway (suspect is long gone, garbage video systems, etc meant nobody would be arrested unless a positive ID could be made...which was almost 0% of the time). So, these smash and grabs are at a level where it would still be impossible for PD's to actively respond to these calls anyway (and they happen so quickly). It basically becomes incumbent on stores to take additional precautionary measures to make these smash/grabs much harder to accomplish. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is the model the department I worked at used to work with 7-11's/CircleK/Target/Walmart/etc to slow down/stop beer dashes/thefts. NOT having cases of beer at the entrance to the store significantly reduced the numbers of these types of calls....keeping expensive stuff behind the counter...etc. If you make it harder for the criminals to steal, they won't. Just like vehicle break-ins...dirtbags won't bust into a car if there is nothing visible for them to steal. We would run big PR campaigns during Christmas to remind people to not leave presents and personal belongings in the vehicle in plain site. It's not hard to do.
