Right now I'd rank us between 20-25, with the ability to beat teams from 12 and on..... This... Houston is good and could and maybe should win this game, but I guarantee you that they are saying, really! The committee knew exactly what they were doing here. They put one of the hottest teams in the country and a team who without significant injuries would have more likely been a six or seven seed against a team from the AAC. No doubt it was intentional... Earlier I posted that IMO our success in Wichita is predicated on the performance of Pope and Mcdaniels.....Both disappeared yesterday when fatigue set in and that won't cut it come Thursday....Both in general, but Pope in particular has to be willing to mix it up and get down and dirty in the low post.... Obviously, without Kell's exceptional performance yesterday, we'd be in the NIT.....

The Aztecs don’t beat UNM without the play of Kell and to a slightly lesser extent Pope and they don’t beat Nevada without McDaniels and Watson, etc... and that is how basketball works, it is usually someone different each night. Pope had 42 points on only 26 shots with 10 boards and several assists and blocks. He was fantastic. McDaniels has 32 points on 20 shots with 24 rebounds, again fantastic! They combined for 74 points on just 46 shots with 34 boards... The tournament was a great team effort and continued what had been happening over the last three weeks... one or two guys shining a little brighter one night and others on other nights...

This is who State could’ve played as an 11/12: Kentucky W Virginia Clemson Ohio St Houston Miami Florida TCU The only teams I’d definitely rather NOT play over Houston are Kentucky and W Virginia. People here are seriously underrating Houston. I would love to get Kentucky. When would the Aztecs get another chance to play Kentucky?

( win vs. UNM) To beat Houston, and possibly Michigan.....Our thin bigs need to play bigger.....JMO!

At first glance, I'm not too keen on this matchup. But we'll see as the week progresses. What's going to change as the week progresses? I just want to hear more about their team. Is that ok?

I don't like the matchup at all, houston is the strongest 6 seed or higher. That being said we do have a chance

I dig on the cautious optimism, but I don't get the fear. What are poster's concerns? Lateral quickness? Are we not quick enough on the perimeter to lock these guys up? Don't we have the size and length to disrupt their guards? They got beef in the low post, but we have the length. And we have both more mass and length on the perimeter.
I half-watched most of their game today against Cincy, and they are good, no doubt about it. But I would appreciate it if some of the more pessimistic psoters ("worst matchup since NC State blah blah") would help me better understand - with clarity and specificity - why this is such a bad match up for us. We can run with them. We can lock them up.
That we opened as 3.5 pt dogs says something - that's a hair's width from being a one-bucket game and about as much respect and/or recognition for our very realistic chances of advancing. It's not like they would make an 11 seed a favorite, nor should they, in this case or in general. But two buckets is about as close as you'll get to doing exactly that. I wholly expect us to compete, and to be in a position to win.

Let’s not forget playing 3 games in 3 days can lead to things like fatigue etc... they won’t have to worry about that the rest of the way.

Houston lives and dies with their outside shooting. They are prone to defensive lapses. I have us losing to Kentucky in the FF.
Yes, it's early, it's too speculative, and I don't gamble, but a re-match with Gonzaga would be part of an EPIC journey . . .
. . . and a yuge middle finger to the trolls and jerks who hate us.
We don't care.

Well, if they have shooters Thee AZTECS will have to defend the perimeter. Rooks, Pope and McDaniels should abuse them in the paint/lane. I think Narain may have his way with these guys on missed shots!! JMO If Narain gets to play. I don't know why he's been exiled to the bench lately. I thought for sure he'd get in against NM since we could have used some fresh legs against their press. He had been playing pretty well, I thought. He was, though defensively he is still not there and Rooks stepped up down the stretch. I think Dutch valued experience over ability as well as going with a guy that was on a roll.

Clog it with what? Rooks can’t play 40 minutes. Have you not seen what thick bigs like Jordan Caroline do to Pope & McD? Hell, even Furstinger caused issues for stretches, and he’s bad. Fursinger was on one all tourney team! Exactly, Furstinger was very good.......He just looks like he'd be bad.

We don't care. I would take a rematch with Gonzaga since that puts us in the Elite 8. As for complaining about our matchup (not aimed at your post, just a general comment), we are not a #1 seed so any team we are matched up against is going to be tough. We got the seed we deserved because the committee didn't want us playing a #5 as hot as we have been. Anyway, just a couple of weeks ago I was hoping to get into the NIT. I see us playing with house money right now.
