I will not try to give a grade to this year's Aztec FB recruiting class. (If I had to do so, I would say a B or even a B+, but such an effort is about as accurate as trying to hit the bullseye on a dart board in a large room lit by a birthday candle.) I do think that some who have criticized (if only in a minor way) the class have neglected to consider the context in which our FB recruiting occurs.
It is, I think, foolish to grade our recruits in comparison with those of well established programs. The sensible question to ask is not, "Why didn't we get more 4 star recruits?" The correct question to ask is this; "Given San Diego State's recent history (i.e., 1999-2009), who could have done a better job of recruiting than that of Coach Hoke and his staff?"
When we ask the correct question, which is the second one stated above, it seems clear that this staff's job of recruiting in 2010 has been pretty good. Frankly, given the unfortunate collapse at the end of last season, I'm impressed that the Aztec recruits for 2010 are as good as they are.
Of course, we will not know for sure until about 2011 or 2012.

I am satisfied with this years class. Hope that we get some early help from the JC kids and that most of the High School kids can red shirt. You can't really tell what we have for a year or two.

It looks real good to me. I like the JC Olineman and beefing up the DLine.
We got some Db's and corners.
Ricky Seale would have been the kicker on the class. To bad we didn't get him. I am very anxious to see the JC running back play.

The JC linemen need to pan out or we could be in trouble at that position. I think this is the key to the season.

The JC linemen need to pan out or we could be in trouble at that position. I think this is the key to the season. All too true. Building formidable offensive and defensive lines is crucial. The USCs, Ohio States, Texases, etc., always get good recruits in those areas. The also-rans are continually playing catch-up where linemen are concerned. I expect to see general improvement in 2010, including improvement in both lines. How much improvement remains to be seen. You know, it may not be until Hoke's third or fourth year that we break through. That's a bitter pill to swallow, considering how long the program has languished, but there may be no other choice. (And that is why the poor coaching hires in 2002 and 2006 have done such damage to the program. If we had brought in competent men a few years ago, the rebuilding would have been yielding results by now.) AzWm

It took quite a few years at Ball State.

It took quite a few years at Ball State. and Ball State was 119 out of 119 for a decade. A little tougher to recruit to the "Beautiful" State of Indiana. Add- not quite the concentration of quality athletes either...

It took quite a few years at Ball State. Yes, it took Brady Hoke 7 years at Ball State. Are Aztec fans willing to wait 7 years? History says no. They get jumpy and nervious at year 3 and 4.

As bad as we have been the last decade, we were and are light years ahead of where Ball State was.

It took quite a few years at Ball State. Yes, it took Brady Hoke 7 years at Ball State. Are Aztec fans willing to wait 7 years? History says no. They get jumpy and nervious at year 3 and 4. Depends on momentum. When it's readily apparent the momentum is negative, any rational person would get jumpy. As to Brady at Ball State, another big difference which hasn't been mentioned is who his coordinators are. At Ball State it was Mark Smith, who is now simply a position coach at SDSU and works for a guy with a national reputation, Rocky Long. (Granted, a few Aztecs have expressed great skepticism about Rocky, for no good reason IMO. He'll prove them wrong.) On offense, Al Borges similarly has a national rep. HS kids may not recognize those names, but their fathers will and that's going to continue to be a benefit to recruiting that Brady didn't have at Ball State. Then there's recruiting to a league which is on the cusp of gaining AQ status with the BCS as opposed to the Mid American Conference. Finally . . It didn't take Brady seven years to get to a bowl game at Ball State. It took him five.

I wish our o-line line looked like BYU's. But they're all over 23 years old. I think their "missions" include a gym membership. Oldie Out

I have absolutely no idea how the 2010 recruiting class ranks, and I don't see how anyone can. My fingers are crossed that he brought in talent, strength and a winning attitude. Oh, and speed.

Are Aztecwin's Tea Bagger bull$#!+ propaganda icons going to be a permanent part of the sports forum? Can't they be reserved for the miscellaneous section?

Are Aztecwin's Tea Bagger bull$#!+ propaganda icons going to be a permanent part of the sports forum? Can't they be reserved for the miscellaneous section? I can remove one of those and I will if the suggestion is worded in some sort of civilized manner. Your ill advised post just stiffens ones back. I had thought I would remove that when it became apparent that this board would be much more widely read.
