Alpine Brewing is pure gold. Glad they and Green Flash hooked up, 2 of my fav breweries. Too bad Green Flash can't get the Alpine recipes down. Green Flash should just give Alpine money to expand and stop trying to brew the beers themself. "It's the water…"

Duet is the best IPA I've ever had. But I think that Racer 5 is the best 'truly' commercially available IPA there is. In other words, you can get a Racer 5 in millions of bars, restaurants, and stores. I agree on the Racer 5, it is pretty good for bottled Ale. I have enjoyed draft Coronado IPA also. The last non-IPA Ale I had on tap was Mirror Pond Pale Ale and I could find nothing wrong with that draft Ale, very drinkable. JMO

I am also a big fan of sculpin ipa and grapefruit sculpin. Another really good one is a seasonal that is put out by Sierra Nevada. It seems to have double the concentration of flavor over their Torpedo ipa. It is a 10%+ ipa called Hoptimum. Comes in a 4-pack. It is out right now. They use the whole hop vs. hop pellets that most breweries use. Some on the East Coast claim that Dogfish Head 90 is the best beer in the world.
SIERRA NEVADA HOPTIMUM® IMPERIAL IPA
A whole-cone hurricane of flavor.
Hoptimum is a hurricane of whole-cone hop flavor. Hopped, dry hopped and torpedoed for incredible hop flavor and complexity, Hoptimum is the pinnacle of whole-cone hoppiness and the biggest Imperial IPA we have ever produced. It features resinous hop varieties: Magnum, Chinook, Simcoe and a new experimental hop variety exclusive to Sierra Nevada. With intense hop flavors and aromas of grapefruit rind, pine, herbs and tropical fruit, Hoptimum is an aggressive drinking experience. Originally created as part of our Beer Camp program, Hoptimum throws down the gauntlet to all other IPAs.
Dry Hops We work hard to get strong hop flavors into our beers and one of the ways we do that is through dry hopping. Dry hopping refers to the addition of whole-cone hops to the fermentation tanks. The addition of hops to cold beer allows the aromatic oils and resins to infuse the beer with flavor and aroma without adding any additional bitterness.

This seems like a nicer, friendlier thread than the Brian Sipe thread where some of you people almost came to keyboard blows. Be classy Aztec fans. Oh, I'm not a hops guys so my fav is still Yellow Tail by Ballast Point. Or, over at Coronado Brewing Co. their Coronado Gold.

One of the fringe benefits of living in Craft Brew Heaven (aka "San Diego"...) is that there is a brewer of fine beers and ales within a stone's throw (pun intended... ) of just about anywhere in the county you might be. Which one is "the best" is one of those great questions that will never be answered to the satisfaction of all, as it comes down to very individual preferences. With all the styles available (IPA, Pale Ale, Blonde Ale, Amber Ale, Red Ale, Wheat, Stout, Porter, Lager, Pilsner, many variants of the aforementioned, and plenty of others I missed) there's certainly something for just about every taste. Count me among the Sculpin fans. That's currently my go-to option, although I'm becoming quite fond of the IPA from Mike Hess brewery right here in North Park.

Sculpin has been my #1 for a few years now. Admittedly I haven't tried Pliny though.
The other day I had a beer that has unseated Sculpin as my #1. St Archer Mosaic IPA. Too bad it was a limited release. If you find it, buy whatever they have in stock. It is amazing.

Sculpin would have to be my #1 IPA Come on up to Santa Rosa and I'll buy you a Pliny on tap ? Was up your way last month visiting friends and that is indeed a quality brew. For bottled beer, I love New Belguim's 1554 ale. Wish they made it year round.

I've been consciously trying to find something better tasting (to me) than Sculpin, and just have not found it yet. I am more than willing to keep trying and of course need to keep going back to Sculpin to keep the taste fresh in my mind. Not an easy thing to do, but I am willing to make sacrifices for the better good of society. I'll let you know if anything changes. If you're coming up for the Cal game, check out the Quasar IPA on tap at Jupiter in downtown Berzerkeley.

Sculpin would have to be my #1 IPA Come on up to Santa Rosa and I'll buy you a Pliny on tap ? I haven't been able to buy a Pliny in Oakland for years, it's crazy how fast it sells out. People actually line up for it now at the Whole Foods so they had to limit it to 2 bottles per customer. Is it like that up there as well? It's good, but come on, it ain't THAT good. The upside is that it forced me to check other selections in their case and have discovered some great stuff like Knee Deep.

Agreed re the R5, and now Trader Joes carries it in all their stores, which made me weep with happiness the first time I saw it there
