Sculpin is good, but there are a lot of better IPA's. I guess the key here is "commercially available", because most of the good stuff doesn't leave SD County...

I've been consciously trying to find something better tasting (to me) than Sculpin, and just have not found it yet. I am more than willing to keep trying and of course need to keep going back to Sculpin to keep the taste fresh in my mind. Not an easy thing to do, but I am willing to make sacrifices for the better good of society. I'll let you know if anything changes.

Alesmith IPA or X?

Good stuff but the moderator appears to be overwhelmed with spam. Why give him 1 more thread to shutdown and/or move? I kind of like the .394 put out by Alesmith. Speedway Stout is also a winner but strong.

Ballast point Victory at Sea or alesmith double nut brown aged in a whiskey cask
off topic, habanero sculpin should be poured into the ocean

Too bad Green Flash can't get the Alpine recipes down. Green Flash should just give Alpine money to expand and stop trying to brew the beers themself.

Love me some Sculpin no doubt (knew it the first sip I had), but just can't get into the Grapefruit version. My pet peeve with craft breweries these days is they are trying to get too cute (like the barrel-aged stuff).

It also probably helps that I'm a big grapefruit fan though.

I've really gotten away from CA breweries for a couple reasons. One, and agreeing with fredgarvinmp, CA breweries in particular seem to be getting way too "cute" (barrel aged, fruits & spices, etc.) Second, especially with the IPAs, there's just no sense of balance, it's all about MORE MORE MORE. DIPA, Triple, Quad... even the "regular" IPAs are cranked up to 7% or higher alcohol content, it's ridiculous. I love me some good floral, piney hops... but there IS such thing as too much. I'm having to largely bypass IPAs (esp. from CA) these days because so many of them have lost any sense of balance.
Founder's All Day IPA would be a good counter-example of a nice, balanced IPA that I still really like.

Had dinner about a month ago at a new high-end restaurant downtown and got into a discussion with the waiter about craft brews. He said he has moved to several different cities around the country the last couple of years and said that SoCal is obsessed with the hops more than any other region in the country. I agree, I would like to see a little more balance from some of these breweries.

Duet is the best IPA I've ever had. But I think that Racer 5 is the best 'truly' commercially available IPA there is. In other words, you can get a Racer 5 in millions of bars, restaurants, and stores.
