My co-worker played at UCLA after Toldeo was there.. He said the players loved him as a coach but he let the players do whatever they wanted .. he called it a "country club". Sounds like a good balance to Rocky's "hard ass" persona.

Absolutely, had a couple of guys I played with play there and that's exactly what they said. Part of that is that is how UCLA has been run since time immemorial, Terry ran it that way, Toledo ran it that way, Dorrell, etc. Look at some of the comments Mora Jr has made, he's tried to break that. Regardless, it's the HC job to set the tone, position coaches to crack the whip, Toledo is there to call plays and teach.

As I recall Borges was the OC for Toledo when he was the HC at UCLA with Rocky Long as DC. He was considered an offensive genius at one time, but a lazy recruiter who let Pete Carroll take over with all the best recruits once he got there leading to Toledo being fired. $#!+, they overlapped by what, one, two years. Carrol didn't exactly set the world on fire his first year. There is always more talent on the SC roster than across town.

Which Donahue let happen, and continued to take place after Toledo was axed per a couple guys on the team

Not concerned about his age since UCLA's great OC Homer Smith was old too. I think he was in his 70's before he retired. The fact that Toledo liked what he saw here before accepting the job is going to prove he's the real deal. It would have been questionable had he jumped at the opportunity before checking it out. As to that country club thing, that won't be Toledo's responsibility here anyway. That's up to Adam Hall, who in turn is directly wired into Rocky to report on who is or isn't dedicated.

That and let players drive "university" vehicles. This one also included tennis players too.
