Former Assistant Long Hires Toledo to Help Him January 19, 2006 | Lonnie White, Times Staff WriterThe three-year coaching hiatus of former UCLA football coach Bob Toledo ended Wednesday when he was introduced as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at New Mexico. Toledo, 59, who had a 49-32 record at UCLA from 1996 to 2002, was hired by Lobo Coach Rocky Long, who worked under Toledo as defensive coordinator for the Bruins in 1996 and '97. While these stats don't tell the whole story here's a look at NM. Before Toledo - Total Offense 397 Scoring Offense 29 Toledo - Total Offense 316 Scoring Offense 21 After Toledo - Total Offense 372 Scoring Offense 24 He earned his reputation at UCLA in the mid to late 90's and hasn't done anything since that time. I wouldn't mind the hire but I hope he is just one of the choices. Hope there are others still to interview.

More ditties: ucla.scout.com/2/894493.html-- "One of the biggest curiosities for Bruin fans in this match-up with the Aztecs are SDSU’s two coordinators. The Aztec offensive coordinator is Al Borges, who was the OC at UCLA from 1996 to 2000 under Bob Toledo, and the architect of the great Cade McNown offenses. SDSU defensive coordinator Rocky Long was the UCLA DC for two seasons, in 1996 and 1997, also under Toledo. Borges and Toledo were the coordinators in 1997 when UCLA went 10-2, won a Pac-10 championship and ended the season ranked 5th in the nation. Borges, since then, has been the OC at California, Indiana and Auburn. Long left UCLA to be the head coach at New Mexico and was there until he was fired after last season. " Oldie Out

He is a bit old is my concern. Yeah, how much fire for the job can he muster @65-66?

He is a bit old is my concern. He'll be good for bringing out all the blue hairs to the game, right?

We could do a lot worse. I won't complain if they hire Toledo.

Kind of ironic how people $#!+ on Tulane in the other thread, and in this thread, we're praising the potential hire of Toledo..

Yeah, how much fire for the job can he muster @65-66? Ask Steve Fisher? Yeah, I don't give a $#!+ how old a Coach is. It's the interviewers (Rocky's) job to gauge a mans fire, determination, and will. There are tired and lazy young men, there are tired and lazy old men. What I want is talent. Anyone watch the Fiesta Bowl Thursday night? Kansas State has a guy named Bill Snyder whom is older than many of our Grandpas. He kicks young coaches asses in the Big 12 weekly. Just bring in a guy who knows how to score points. I think Toledo could do that. He's not my first choice, but I'll take him.

Interesting. I think he is more fit as a coordinator than a head coach. Wonder who the other candidates are?

Was he the HC at Pacific when Marshall went nutty on them? Naw, he was at Pacific from 79 to 82 according to his bio. Walt Harris was UOP's Head Coach when Marshall went buck wild on them. The guy that went on to have some success at Pitt and then flame out at Stanford. articles.latimes.com/1991-09-15/sports/sp-3523_1_marshall-faulk

He is a bit old is my concern. Same here. I was hoping to bring in a lot more youth in the coaching department.

Don't know why, but I think there's a big difference between football and basketball in the age factor. Perception only perhaps. Bill Snyder is 73. But the scarcity of coaches in 60's and 70s in football is very noticeable---even in the pros--- compared to basketball. Probably has to do with numbers and the more personal contact a basketball coach has with his players. More like a father.

called this at start. makes total sense - him and rocky coached together at UCLA, he was Rocky's OC for a year at UNM. Toledo was once a very, very effective play caller in the pro set and did lots of double tight end stuff and still loved to throw the ball down the field. We can do a lot worse. Agreed, the dude's name still has some pull with LA area coaches as well. Have met him a few times when he was recruiting some of our players when he was at UCLA and at the Pasadena QB club each time when he was king $#!+ in LA during the long winning streak and he came across well. Guy has spent nearly his entire life outside a couple brief stops in California, can't see how recruiting would be a problem
