Toledo's introduction to Aztec Football December 9, 1967 on ABC regional TV not pretty on his part.... Not many coaches had a good experience playing the Aztecs in the latter years of the 1960s.

Holy carp. I remember those teams at UCLA. They seemed to score 40+ every game. You said "Holy Carp!!", so just to keep it on a fish theme I'll say "Holy Mackerel!!", to the possible signing of Bob Toledo. The "Sacred Cod."

But the scarcity of coaches in 60's and 70s in football is very noticeable---even in the pros--- compared to basketball. Probably has to do with numbers and the more personal contact a basketball coach has with his players. More like a father. Saban is in his 60s, The Oracle believes.

How did he do as HC at Tulane? I don't think anyone has done well there.

believe Rocky in the past ,has let his OC completely run the offense , make the calls , other then 2 point decisions. So whomever he choses will be very important. So trust , confidence in the coach , ability to coach , maybe more important to Rocky then creativity or the ability to recruit. Would be helpful if Toledo has established some ties to some players from the South East area while he was at Tulane.

From an article a few years ago in reference to him taking back play calling duties. theadvocate.com/sports/723109-64/story.html“You’ve got to try to threaten deep,” Toledo said. “You have to make them respect the field vertically. I don’t think we did that very well last year. We were much more of a nickel, dime type of passing game while trying to get guys to run after the catch. Well, we didn’t run very well after the catch to be honest with you. “My philosophy is we are going to run the ball, run the ball and get people in the box, and then we are going to take advantage of single coverage. We are going to go deep. So you’ll see us take four or five shots at least during the course of the game.”

I'm just hoping that there's another sighting of a coach on campus today that's a little more exciting than Toledo.

It's how Rocky got Ludwig from Cal, which could be considered a step backwards in some circles, but Tedford kept meddling with the offense, which probably pissed Ludwig off enough and Rocky promised him free reign here. The next OC I'm sure will have complete control. Rocky's got his hands full as DC. That has to be an incentive.

Rocky said on the radio it's between Toledo, Horton and one other unnamed coach.

To all of the candidates mentioned in this thread. You say that as if you have a clue what you're talking about. Pretty funny graphic though.

Former Assistant Long Hires Toledo to Help Him January 19, 2006 | Lonnie White, Times Staff WriterThe three-year coaching hiatus of former UCLA football coach Bob Toledo ended Wednesday when he was introduced as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at New Mexico. Toledo, 59, who had a 49-32 record at UCLA from 1996 to 2002, was hired by Lobo Coach Rocky Long, who worked under Toledo as defensive coordinator for the Bruins in 1996 and '97. While these stats don't tell the whole story here's a look at NM. Before Toledo - Total Offense 397 Scoring Offense 29 Toledo - Total Offense 316 Scoring Offense 21 After Toledo - Total Offense 372 Scoring Offense 24 He earned his reputation at UCLA in the mid to late 90's and hasn't done anything since that time. Which proves another point I'm sure you forgot. When you don't have quality players with you there is not a lot you can do. Obviously, he had them at UCLA, and not much of anything at N. Mex. He won big time at UCLA, and had his team ranked high because they played well. He would be an excellent choice for our OC because he knows how to move the ball! ;D

As I recall Borges was the OC for Toledo when he was the HC at UCLA with Rocky Long as DC.
He was considered an offensive genius at one time, but a lazy recruiter who let Pete Carroll take over with all the best recruits once he got there leading to Toledo being fired.

My co-worker played at UCLA after Toldeo was there.. He said the players loved him as a coach but he let the players do whatever they wanted .. he called it a "country club".
