We still have over five months to go, but I'm putting my money on this thread as the Worst Of The Year! It would have to finish pretty high in the race to be named Most Embarrassing Thread of the Year, too. Well, it would only be embarrassing if somebody from one of the "major" conferences were to read it. It is the silly season, but really! AzWm you ain't seen nothing yet, chief.

Hey JD, Just bustin your chops... some of the fans of the BW seem to really value some of the other Olympics (such as soccer), not that they aren't important or that SDSU also doesn't value them, just that primarily football and basketball drive the bus. IMO the BW should do everything possible to make basketball priority #1. PS. I love how you actually have a sense of humor when it comes to this message board... Cheers! Having Big Ten connections in my family (parents Minnesota grads) personally drives home how important football can be, so don't worry about me in that regard. As far as basketball ideally being #1 in the BW, trust me - the top dogs get it. In fact, I'd say everyone not named Northridge gets it. Fullerton is an oddity but even they know the importance of hoops. With UCSB, Long Beach, SDSU, and Hawaii the brand will receive a shot in the arm locally as well as nationally. Boise remains to be seen but supposedly they have hidden potential so we'll see. If there is a lesson one can learn from Boise, it is to never neglect the olympic sports. Boise has had a difficult time finding a conference home because of this. While Idaho's poor football performance has much to do with their situation, them seemingly ignoring the olympic sports only hurts their cause. Whether a school has football or not you have to take care of the other teams. These sports also provide a well-rounded experience. I went to my fair share of volleyball, tennis, softball, baseball, and water polo contests in college. At the very least watching friends and classmates compete was great times all around. I dunno how many Aztecs care about these other sports but it's nice knowing you have them. One thing I love about UCSB, is the identity that has developed over the last decade. We know who we are: one well-rounded athletics program who is also a national power in men's soccer. Not only are we good at that, we make it fun to watch too. Kinda goes against the grain of college athletics but UCSB likes dancing to their own beat anyway. The bar for excellence has been set pretty high in Santa Barbara, across all sports. This is what men's soccer has done the last 10 years: - one national championship - two title game appearances - six Sweet 16's - 10 consecutive NCAA tournaments, each time advancing to at least the second round - numerous MLS draft picks, including two top 10 picks this year Basketball has held its own somewhat these last five years: - Three 20-win seasons, - two NCAA tournaments, - one NIT - one NBA draft pick. That said, I (along with all Gaucho fans, faculty and alumni) would be in nirvana if basketball ever came close to soccer's level of success. Don't think that is possible but you never know. It's a nervous and exciting time for Gaucho hoops and for the BW as a whole. PS: Thank you. Having a sense of humor keeps the mood light and the perspectives in check. Besides, this is a fun message board to begin with. I hope SDSU stays around for a long time because this could be the start of something special in our conference. Cheers!

Had enough UCSB propaganda for one thread? Oh, by the way, did I mention that UCI has won three of the last six Men's Volleyball National Championships?
As for the whole Boise thing, I try to look at it to see who won and who lost. I always want a win-win if possible, so let's see who won . . .
Boise? yeah, I think Boise won. They wanted in the conference and they got it. SDSU? yeah, pretty much ditto the BWC? well, not totally sure until the details come out, but let's say they probably won. They wanted travel subsidy and something extra. At the very least they got travel and Boise adds something to the conference, so that's a win.
Hey, looks like everybody wins. . .
. . . except The Show. You guys LOSE.

Had enough UCSB propaganda for one thread? Oh, by the way, did I mention that UCI has won three of the last six Men's Volleyball National Championships? you left out UCI's revival in baseball the last 10 years: - one College World Series - two Super Regionals - seven NCAA tournament appearances you also can't forget that an Irvine basketball alum led OKC to their first NBA finals and is a former coach of the year winner. Men's soccer is starting to make waves nationally as well. As for the whole Boise thing, I try to look at it to see who won and who lost. I always want a win-win if possible, so let's see who won . . . Boise? yeah, I think Boise won. They wanted in the conference and they got it. Boise won because they now don't have to worry about the baseball/men's soccer issue. SDSU fits right at home here. the BWC itself? remember it just picked up Hawaii. So even with Pacific leaving, all things considered I'd call the BWC a big winner.

Big Lots is the biggest winner of all the conferences in the last 3 years of expansurbation.
Pac got a huge deal, but they limited access to cali for their members, ended up with a sever plan B SEC got the fake army in Texas, but Mizzou is not a home run, some of those teams that had wars won't see each other much more than once a decade Big 12 now is spread out to one school that is 2 hours from a major airrport and burns couches and have lost some major names in Nebraska and aTm Big 10 did real well for themselves then named the divsions in an absurd manner and set them up so Penn State would be one of the anchors and now they are an anchor in a different sense CUSA lost more of its big names/cities, is a clear 3rd in florida and texas now MWC lost the most of anyone and has been thoroughly gutted and lost coverage with the mtn going down and a 1/3 of their payout (4 mil a year loss)
The Big West got a bit of coverage with Long Beach State and now adds a bball team that has been getting a ton of press in SDSU, household names, even if not in bball, in boise and hawaii and they haven't had to pay a red cent as both are paying subsidies.
The MWC is the biggest loser by a large margin, the Big Lots the biggest winner by the same absolute value

Of course, I DON'T know what it's record was and no offense to the young men - or women? - who play that sport, who I'm sure are great kids - I just don't care. That's because no REAL conference cares about soccer. But in the Big Lots, futbol es muy importante. Para UCSB y UCI tambien. These types threads are going to be plentiful once July 1, 2013 rolls around, you can bet your ass.

I dunno about it being biggest winner, monty. There are other conferences who have done well too:
The Ohio Valley Conference picks up Belmont. Increases their chances of becoming a two-bid league.
I'd call the Atlantic 10 a winner. Adding Butler and VCU more than offsets Temple and Charlotte leaving, and for one year they are all conference mates. This could be a ridiculous season with at least five or six bids (Temple, Butler, VCU, Xavier, St. Louis, etc.)
WCC is a big winner too. Gains BYU and Pacific, so far have lost nobody. BYU is a perfect fit culturally and athletically for this conference and their teaming up with Gonzaga and St. Mary's gives the league a top trio of teams for basketball. Pacific goes "home" to a conference they founded (they were also a Big West founder). It will be a new era for them as their long time coach Bob Thomason retires after this year.
Also worth mentioning (imo) is that in a couple years Pacific will start up men's soccer. It might have been a condition upon entering the WCC but it also probably puts to rest any chance of them bringing back football.

The MWC is the biggest loser by a large margin, the Big Lots the biggest winner by the same absolute value Big West has done well in conference realignment. Granted, it happened to be in the right place at the right time. But funny how these things work out: its status as a non-football league really paid off here. In an ironic twist, a low level of prestige - the Bus league identity - helped the conference stay intact to build up stability and remake its image. Give the BW credit. Unlike a decade or two earlier - when Davis, Northridge and Cal Poly were added for survival - now the Big West could deny Bakersfield and UCSD (and wisely did so). I do ultimately want UCSD in the Big West, but not for a while.

Zactly, James. There's a reason why Arizona, ASU, Colorado, Oregon, USC, Utah and WSU all don't play soccer.

So what does it say about them? that new Big East you want to be a full member of? everyone not named Houston plays too. The BE is barely a REAL conference either. REAL conferences don't let anybody in who doesn't play both football and men's basketball yet the BE has always had about a dozen such members. It's just a guess but I don't think it's coincidental that Cal and UCLA both play soccer. Once NOW sued California public schools, the universities needed to look around for low cost men's sports in order to play enough of them to maintain membership in their conference while not having to fund scholarships that would have to be matched with an equal number of scholarships for women's sports. Create a men's soccer team and you can give some HS boys a leg up regarding admission and if you can bus to most of the games, you can run a men's soccer program on a shoestring. And you're going to have to do so because except for the aberrations like UCSB, nobody cares about soccer so nobody is going to pay to watch and the games aren't going to be televised so you aren't going to earn money from the public which can be funneled back to the team. Kudos to UCSB for having a successful soccer team. However, the issue here is conference revenue and no conference is going to turn more than a menial profit from that sport. Not in our lifetimes anyway. For the next several decades at least, and probably much longer than that, it's football and to a much lesser extent men's basketball which earns conferences a profit.

So what? most of us don't know we're there, those that do know being there for soccer means less than nothing and we only sponsor soccer because it's lower cost and let's us be compliant for offering enough sports. Boise is in the pac for wrastling, doesn't make that sport matter or any of our fan bases going, yea, we're in the pac 10 because they need someone to offer a sport most of their schools feel are worthless.

Last year, this guy named Steve Cash wrote the song "If the Broncos had a Kicker." I've posted it on here a couple times. Who knows, maybe he'll write one for all the BW members. After all, Boise has to do something to help make this worthwhile for everyone. Although, he should cut back on the cat videos. Love that vid. I wonder if part of the Big East's help is assistance with the new TV contract next year. The new Big East commisioner would be a valuable resource for us (the Big West) in those negoiations. Yes, I did say "us".

please admit that your "Let's take our talents to the WAC if the BW doesn't add Boise" declaration was arrogant, baseless, and ultimately rediculous. Not ridiculous at all and your comment is absolutely speculative. It's obvious no effort was ever made to save the WAC since Boise decided it would eventually be admitted to the BLC. Boise's admission to the BLC simply took BE intervention. Once the BE settled with WVU, Pitt and Syracuse on exit penalties which, IIRC, were cumulatively ~$22.5M, a portion of that was designated to Boise to help defray travel expenses for BLC members other than SDSU. Had the BE blown off Boise's overtures in that regard, Boise would have made some effort to save the WAC but the fact Boise never made any such effort is proof the BE simply told Boise it needed to be patient in order to get the monetary commitment. Maybe Boise would have been unsuccessful in trying to save the WAC, but we'll never know since no effort was ever made. So your bold statement above is just silly.
