Wrong. Daffy Duck would have been a lateral hire. There are many reasons unrelated to coaching why we may not go 3-1 out of the gate. Fred Dryer was on the radio last week talking about Coryell and the SDSU days. Dryer had nothing but praise for Hoke and the staff; he said "they get it". As we all remember, after Long's first year, Dryer had already seen enough and told Long to his face. So for now I'll stand by Dryer. If I recall when Fred lost it he said it to Weber, not Long. And we all know that Fred Dryer is a loose cannon. Not the guy I want speaking for my University and certainly not a guy whos opinions I respect. Now Marshall Faulk? Yes, I do respect his opinion and he is a class act.

If I recall when Fred lost it he said it to Weber, not Long. I recall Dryer said it publicly at a booster luncheon in late November 2006 after Long's players quit against TCU and New Mexico. In all fairness, those were Crafts holdovers who quit. This season is the first year to judge Longs recruits.

Right, Frantic, and if being correct about Chuck Long before almost anybody else and so stating publicly makes him a loose cannon, that's perfectly fine with me.

Isn't this the same guy who was recently quoted as saying he regretted going to SDSU? (It's from a past post on this board) As a graduate of SDSU I respect Fred. He's a true rep of the school and obviously wants what's good for it.

I am sure Marshall Faulk would say the same thing today as he said then, which is also what I've been saying for two years. Chuck Long deserved a 4th year. Neither Marshall or I have said he needed a 4th year because he was a great or even good coach. He deserved a 4th year, because of the mess he took over and no matter what, there was no chance to see progress in 3 years. The 4th year would be the year to judge, not 3rd. Fred Dryer? Yes, he wants the best for the University. But he's not a guy I want to be our spokesman and I will guarantee you Dr. Weber doesn't want to see it either.

Yeah, Steve, like you know how Weber feels about Dryer. OK SGF....Of course I haven't talked to Dr. Weber about it. (And I didn't pretend that I did) Let me ask you a question. Do you think Dr. Weber would like Fred Dryer to be a spokesman for San Diego State University? The Fred Dryer that on live radio a couple of years ago had this question asked of him and I will follow with his comment.... Sports Broadcaster---Fred, what do you think of the showboating in football, and staged acts after TD's etc?
Fred Dryer---It is very sad. I call it the "Ghetto-ization" of pro sports.Well SGF, do you think Dr. Weber wants that guy to be our spokesman?

I just don't know what to expect. Concerns: We don't know how to win and have shown an ability to fall apart when things don't go our way We don't create a lot of turnovers which to me isn't some luck quotient like Phil Steele believes, it is a sign of a lack of athleticism and either of the positions that directly lead to turnovers: pressure off the edge and secondary coverage skills - we don't hit QBs with our ends/outside linebackers, and our secondary was the worst unit on the field in my opinion We have no semblance of a running game Now those are all tempered by: new juco lineman that could/should(maybe better) make an impact and adding Hillman and the juco into the backfield - Sullivan full time at fullback/the other back in split backs Some newer, younger players in the secondary; Preston's athleticism could make him a great fit at the monster back At Chuck's introductory luncheon at the Hall of Champions, I told him our team didn't know how to win. He answered that they would be taught how to do so. I think turnovers are in part related to luck. However, I agree with you that Steele is wrong in concluded that is completely true. Rather, as you say, most of them are created by aggressive defenses and offenses inattentive to detail. On the running game, a former player told me last year that in his view, the absence thereof was as much a result of mediocre running backs as mediocrity on the line. In that regard, I don't hear Miller's name mentioned at all and therefore hope he will redshirt to pack on some muscle weight so he can compete to replace Sullivan at FB next year. While Kazee showed some ability, he's simply too small to be the primary guy as he was at the end of 2009 and with the talent coming in, I would expect him to become just a situational guy. Bottom line for me is I expect improvement in the running game even without much improvement in the O-line. (I'm actually more concerned that O-line mediocrity is going to negate what could be our best passing attack since 2002.) I agree on Preston's athleticism. Still, I'm hesitant to anoint him the answer at the Aztec position as I've just seen him take bad angles and be out of position too many times the last couple years to be confident he can get it done. (Sure hope he proves me wrong.) On preston - i totally agree: dude goes under blocks and gets stuck in the pile and overpursues and/or leaves his feet and misses tackles - I think that him in a little more space could be very beneficial though. I'm not sure if Hillman or the juco dude can run between the tackles, if they can't, then we're in trouble line or not. I'm not ready to sell-off on Kazee just yet, I think he can be effective carrying the rock 10-20 times a game for the next 3 years - dude was pretty effective as a true frosh runing the sweep once his feet got wet.

I believe Fred Dryer spoke well for the University when he prevented the rabble from taking down and burning our flag.

Muema looked like the guy who could do that but apparently as a result of his injury, he's going to redshirt. And although Miller is reputedly a power runner, he sure didn't show it in 2009 so as I say, he needs a full year in the weight room to become a DIA fullback. (He lacks the speed to play tailback.)

Of course you don't want to burst your bubble about Faulk, but a statement like that usually doesn't come out of thin air, especially about a beloved ex-player. I like the guy too, but I leaned toward it as being more than just a rumor. Fred probably wasn't singularly responsible, but his tirade certainly stirred up the boosters. As a result Weber too, whether he liked it or not. It got us a new coach with a quality staff. Your insistence on giving Long his 4th year is strictly on principle, not common sense. You can argue about it until the cows come home, but fortunately the majority ruled in our favor.

Muema to me could be the star of the class. If Hillman can catch the ball out of the backfield in D1, be serviceable in at lest choping down some free rushers, and show at least some toughness between the tackles, we could be in shape with him and sullivan in the backfield. Frankly, I don't think he's going to be doing all that stuff out of the gate and he'll split time with Kazee and Sullivan will get most of the carriers between the tackles and kazee will get a lot of sweeps, and hillman a lot of power, counter trey traditional I type runs. Sullivan is by far the most rounded-out back and will dot the I with a traditional fullback/hback, be the ace back, be up back in offset I with hillman and the other back in split backs with kazee (at least that is how I see them being used). If Muema were availaible, I though he might get 10-15 snaps as the Sullivanunderstudy; as it is, I think sullivan will get 30-40 snaps a game. That will reduce if JUCO dude catches the ball out of the backfield and can pass pro, as he seems like he could be a 3rd down back, ace back, and a tailback type in split backs.

I think he would have.

Because I have never before heard about any such comment by the man. I heard it live on radio. Jim Rome Show. And I think I can probably find a link given time. I will start looking around for a link. No guarantees but like I said, I heard it live and so did others. In the meantime here is your spokesman at his best...Naw, this type of stuff wouldn't be too controversial for San Diego State University and Dr. Weber... articles.latimes.com/2000/jun/30/sports/sp-46449/2___________________________________________________ Here is one little segment from that link... The topic was violence in sports, and Dryer went in several directions. He defended Rocker, saying he agrees with what the relief pitcher had told Sports Illustrated about the people who ride the No. 7 train in New York."The problem was, Rocker didn't articulate what he had to say very well, and he should have stood up and answered the media's questions afterward," Dryer said. He blamed leniency by police and the actions of special interest groups for the decaying of society."Race relations are worse now than they've ever been," he said. He called Jesse Jackson "a racist who never misses a photo op."Although a nonsmoker, he said it shouldn't be illegal to smoke in restaurants and bars. A strong advocate of the death penalty, he said looters who do not obey police should be shot.___________________________________________________ Now I'M SURE Dr. Weber would want that guy speaking on our behalf.

Having Googled it, the only thing anywhere close to what you assert that I could find was this: articles.latimes.com/2000/jun/30/sports/sp-46449/2Outspoken? Yes. But nothing close to what you said.
