Hey, I gave you all a chance to see this thread closed, but there was no outpouring of support for that. Actually, the opposite was true. You had your chance! ! ! ;D AzWm (or WLR as the situation dictates) No problem for me on having the topic William. I was just always amazed on the other boards that this topic would come up and people would keep saying...."Steve, Stop talking about this. No one wants to talk about this. Let it go." Yet every time the topic came up, posters would come out of the woodwork to comment on it. I purposely stayed off this thread for approx 3 pages. I had about 2 posts of the first 60. So 58 other posters drove this thread before I ever got involved. "Long" Live this topic. I hear what you're saying Steve. Seems proof to me Steve that you're not the only one with an opinion on Craft or Long. Take out your posts and we're still at LEAST on 10 pages. Go figure.

Tom Craft was an Aztec coach and an Aztec player. Chuck Long was an Aztec coach. Fans obviously want to still talk about this or the thread wouldn't get to 10 pages and 2,000 views.

I'm going to follow how Craft does at Riverside. I hope he does well. I will always say that if the administration would have given him the support they gave Long he could have got it done.

I agree with you. Also, I Hope Hoke and Craft keep the lines of communication open for potential recruits from Riverside. I can confirm that Craft still bleeds that Red and Black.

Yep...This is a dead topic... Aztec fans don't want to talk about it. This topic will never get old. Hopefully someday we'll be looking back on all this in laughter rather than nervous fear... And the nervous fear will go away when the Admins finally step up and hire a coach that will put people in the seats AND win... That takes....$$$$$$$

That takes....$$$$$$$ I'm almost certain we could have gotten Terry Bowden for less than we're paying Hoke. So to me, at least as much as money, it takes a willingness to risk hiring somebody who might become a big personality on campus. Correct me if you think I'm wrong but it seems as though ever since Coryell got in a battle with Day or whomever was then the prez that they haven't hired anybody they weren't sure they could "control."

And yes SGF.....I think you are 100% correct. As I said $$$$$$ are so important, but control (or being afraid of someone they can't control) is the main problem. And that is the ONLY reason that we didn't hire coaches like Erickson, Skippy, and Terry Bowden.......who all 3 would have come here for less money than Brady Hoke OR Chuck Long.

I am a big Hoke fan now but I still wonder how Bowden would have done. Craft was and could again somedaay be a very good offensive coordinator at SDSU.

Though he did not bring the instant notoriety that would have accompanied Bowden, I believe that Brady Hoke is a very good head coach who knows what it takes to create a winning Div-I football program. The problem is this; SDSU has sunk so low for so long that time is a factor.
If Hoke (or someone like him) had taken over after Tollner was fired, the pressure to turn things around would not have been so great. There would have been pressure, but as the 2002 season opened, we were just four years removed from a bowl appearance. Today we are TWELVE years removed!
I will repeat what I have said before and what really worries me. Hoke started out with a very modest improvement last year, a season that was marred by a decline in the team's fortunes toward the end. That is not what you want to see.
If we had been 2-7 after nine games, and had then beaten Wyoming and UNLV, the final record would have been the same but the progress over the whole season would have been obvious. That did not happen, so 2009 went into the books as a slight improvement over Long's last team and nothing more. There was certainly no big increase in attendance.
Now, let's suppose that early in the season Ryan Lindley gets injured so badly that he never plays again. Ever. Where would we go from there? Hoke would almost have to start all over, at least with respect to the offense. We might be looking at 4 or 5 win seasons until 2012 at least. By then the program would be a decade and a half removed from a winning season and a bowl invitation.
Will that happen? Let's hope not! But it is possible. A program that has enjoyed three or four winning seasons during the previous decade (which would not be outstanding by any means) can suffer than kind of misfortune and pull through. A program that is bleeding dollars and can't draw flies might not.
Do you think that Long Beach and Fullerton would have folded their programs had they been winning more often than not during the late 1980s? Probably not.

Fisher had a name, won a national title, had been to two other championship games about half a dozen years before he got there, did his name increase attendance and excite the community? Wins turned the crowds from from 1500 to 5 or 6 grand to 8 or 9 on a regular basis. Perhaps he could have magically turned one of the worst offense, defense and special teams units last year into upper half bowl-eligible teams - but that is all we can argue, because we weren't going to draw 35k or something last year coming of a 2 win season where those last 2 games that year had maybe 15k there.

You know, it doesn't take much to bring the crowds for football since we only average 6 home games a season. If the bandwagon fans sniff a winner they'll check out a game right away. What to watch for is the AFA game at home. The crowd will be conditional based on our won-loss record up until that game. My prediction is as follows: Record.......................Attendance 5-0.............................40,000+ 4-1.............................30,000 3-2.............................25,000 max I don't even want to guesstimate if we're 2-3.

And a look at what attendance (my prediction) would have been with a 2-3 start (forget the 4-1 and 5-0) with Dennis Erickson, Skippy, or Terry Bowden... 35,000 plus every game in the first year, no matter what the record......And the salary would have been less than Brady Hoke OR Chuck Long. That is why I say this was a "lateral" hire. It had no effect on winning immediately or attendance immediately.
