And this is surface level thinking that gets you nowhere, illustrating my point. Not surface level thinking at all. I'm actually trained in supervision and associate management. It's all about PERSONALITIES. The rest almost handles itself once you've gotten them to buy in. Melvin hasn't gotten anyone to buy in. They're doing what they want to do, not what he wants them to do. You're not trained in professional baseball, though. Structural problems existing far above Melvin matter a ton more than Melvin himself.

I don't follow MLB closely enough anymore to know the names of all the managers and position coaches. I have no idea - but if you don't believe that there are better managers out there every year then you haven't been following MLB for the last 45 years. There are always veterans who got screwed at their last job. And there are always young up and coming guys who become hugely successful. Always. Flaherty isn't one of those guys, though. He's failed here, so promoting him makes no sense. Yet you want the manager fired, the GM fired, Grisham sent into orbit and a whole other slew of moves...and you don't even follow what's happening. www.thebiglead.com/posts/san-diego-padres-aj-preller-change-01h8xebnfyghThis was written today by a good friend of mine and echoes a lot of the same things I've talked about in the past. If you think it's just about "better"....we are back to the surface level thinking that isn't enough. The Padres did make a run at history this season--just not the history they were hoping for.

And it gets worse. They lose ten spots in their draft status if the pick doesn't fall in the top six.

Preller has had 7 or 8 hitting coaches during his tenure. It's not the hitting coach, it's the lazy-ass players. Who's having the best years: Snell, Hader, Kim Who's playing for new contacts: Snell, Hader, Kim Who's sucked most of the season; Manny, Bogaerts, Cronenworth Who got big, long-term contracts before this season: Manny, Bogaerts, Cronenworth The Padres have had lots of hitting coaches since moving to Petco Park--not just under Preller. If you're going to be a Padre/Preller apologist, get your facts straight. This is from an East Village Times article from two(!) years ago: "During Preller’s reign alone, the team has turned to seven different hitting coaches: Mark Kotsay, Alonzo Powell, Alan Zinter, Luis Ortiz, Matt Stairs, Johnny Washington, and Damion Easley (this season’s doomed hitting coach)." I think we've even had a couple more since then. www.eastvillagetimes.com/surprise-the-san-diego-padres-hire-a-new-hitting-coach/

The fact is, there have been lots of hitting coaches in the 20 seasons the Padres have played in Petco. The Padres had 6 different hitting coaches from 2004 until Preller took over. I accept your apology.

I accept your apology. There won't be an apology as you said there just weren't many hitting coaches under Preller. I'd say 7 or 8 qualifies as many. I know the Padres have had a history of hiring a lot of them before Preller but Preller has more than kept up that legacy.

That needs to happen independently of the other changes. And yes, it makes absolutely no sense why the Padres invest as much as they do in their payroll and FA, when their front office and analytics are so bad. Agree with that sentiment 100%. It's penny rich pound foolish.

Educate me here: Your profile says you were born in 1986 Agent Orange production ended in the 1970s So I assume you were being "funny".

My father served in Vietnam from 1965-1969. He was exposed to Agent Orange during his tour in some of the worst parts of the war. His exposure was linked to my spina bifida. birthdefects.org/agent-orange/#:~:text=These%20included%20spina%20bifida%2C%20oral,higher%20in%20Vietnam%20veterans'%20children.
