Oh, for sure, but you don't sit idly around and wait for that. If you can pull something off, you do it. Grisham has had his run here. He doesn't produce enough, offensively. He doesn't steal enough bags. He strikes out too much, and on and on. Manny needs to step up like the leader he supposedly is, and start friggin producing. Boegarts gave us false hope. Hopefully, these two pull their heads out of their arses and get it going, or, like you're saying, it's going to be a long season. There's no universe where the Padres are playoff contenders with Bogaerts and Machado not being at their career norms. It's just impossible on this roster, given the payroll constraints. I think this is why we want a trade for a first basemen. Then you have 5 infielders, and you can rotate days off especially considering Kim and Cronenworth's versatility. You go get a first basemen and then entire infield's numbers improve with rest days. And no Odor doesn't count, he's a .200 hitter that hurts the Pads production, and not someone that we want getting a lot of at bats.

this topic should not be "Can Grisham really be this bad." it should be, "can the padres really be this bad?" the pirates are making them look like a T-ball team, not like a group of overpaid semi-pros.

Grisham is a big part of the Padres being this bad. His bat is afraid of the ball.
Cut him loose.

Because, you know what you've said about batting averages.

His average, OBP, RBI, and Runs scored are all pathetic.

If the league average hitter is hitting that badly then the league has gone WAY downhill. His average, OBP, RBI, and Runs scored are all pathetic. Not to mention his strike out ratio. It's absolutely horrible. He strikes out constantly. I could put up with him more if he could at least put the ball in play more often.

He has his moments, but most of his moments are not good at all. He does not put the ball in play NEARLY enough. He strikes out at an incredibly bad rate. He's only "fine" in the outfield. He's not an average, overall, hitting Center Fielder. He's a huge liability at the plate, mainly because he can't even put the ball in play most of the time. He can't even make a reputable bunt attempt. Like you said, he's a liability.

If the league average hitter is hitting that badly then the league has gone WAY downhill. His average, OBP, RBI, and Runs scored are all pathetic. So you don't understand the metric. That makes more sense. I'm curious what you think the league average in OBP is, or league average OPS is. All of that is covered in wRC+.

I do understand that he typically hits eighth or ninth, and you're usually not going to have a very productive guy in that spot, but like I said, he really needs to put the ball in play more, and strike out a lot less.

Exactly - if he could trade some of his slugging for some batting average to increase his OBP and put the ball in play more, that would be ideal. He has such a good speed tool that he really just needs to put the ball in play more to let his speed play in beating out ground balls and stealing bases. Or at least change his approach situationally, figure out when to lay down a bunt, figure out when to swing for contact vs when to swing for the fences. The Padres really have not done a good job of developing Grisham.

The Padres really have not done a good job of developing Grisham. It's really the exact opposite. In general, you want to trade strikeouts for additional slugging. The problem with Grisham is the same it's always been - He's too passive as a hitter and can be had in the strike zone, especially on the outer half of the plate. But that said, he's still a league average bat, despite the fact he's underperforming his expected numbers by a pretty considerable margin.

Get on base, then steal a bag. That would set up Tatis nicely.
