Among the players to be worse offensively than Trent Grisham this year: Nick Castellanos, Javy Baez, Marcell Ozuna, Nelson Cruz, Whit Merrifield, Adam Frazier...and the list goes on for a while. What criteria are you going on? The only guy on that list that is maybe worse is Frazier and his BA is still 50 points above Grisham's. And before you talk about what a great defender is, he's only the 7th best Center Fielder in the National League in Fielding % and tied for 11th (!!!!) in Assists. Grisham .191 10 HR 35 RBI Ozuna .219 18 HR 40 RBI Cruz .231 8 HR 52 RBI Castellanos .250 8 HR 47 RBI Merrifield .243 5 HR 40 RBI Baez .221 10 HR 39 RBI Yep, you're right, they have better numbers than Grisham. Ozuna with 18 HR's, for one example. Big difference.

Making up random hypotheticals doesn't change the story. It just weakens your position. But you're validating the Eric Hosmer experiment, certainly. Dude, come on. Were the 1984 Padres really the most talented team in the National League that year? Hell, no! But they were the most cohesive and were a true TEAM. An extended family. The same can be said of the 1998 Padres. It's often not the most talented team that wins, but the most cohesive team with the best locker room atmosphere. Sports are just as much mental as they are physical. I can’t speak intelligently on the 84 team, since I was two — but the 98 team was friggin stacked. Especially after acquiring KB and it really helped when Hitchcock showed up big and paid the rent.

I don’t get the absolute losing mentality of “we’ve never won, so we never will.”
Take it from a Cleveland fan (who also follows SD). 52 years, buddy. And some of the most heartbreaking losses you can imagine. Jose Mesa in game 7, ‘97. My earliest Browns memories were “The Drive” and “The Fumble”.
Id like to think it made it taste all the better when I attended the championship parade after the Cavs 2016 title. What a great time!
I’m sure some Saints fans (God, they were so awful most of my childhood and before) thought they would never see a title. Kansas City, how long was that drought until the Royals 6 or 7 years ago then Mahomes?
I don’t buy curses. I believe in smart people in place, that are left to do their jobs and given RESOURCES.
I do believe in bad breaks/bad luck. I do know that SD would have won the Super Bowl over Philly the last Marty year, if Mccree just goes the f x x x down and we finish off NE. Then the egomaniac AJ Smith brings in Norv (ugh) and LT or Rivers suffer key injuries at the wrong time in the playoffs.

That SD NE game was tough to get over. Watched it with my best friend who is a Charger maniac.
An hour after it ended, just sitting there in shock…….shaking our heads and sipping a warm beer.

Eked out a victory today despite another craptastic offensive performance. BP got the message and got serious today, nailing down the last three innings.
Still glaringly apparent that without some consistent power, it'll be more of these nail-biters. And I don't really see them winning half of those as others have expressed.

I doubt he leaves either, but it depends on the market, and the number of millions of dollars more he might get elsewhere. The only thing that changes for me is the Hosmer situation. I doubt Manny leaves for financial reasons. I hope you are correct.

I’m not as worried about the bullpen with so many guys coming back. I want to see Tatis in CF where he is way less likely to separate his left shoulder. Give me either Soto in RF or Contreras and Happ at C and in RF.

Try 54 years of true Major League sports with zero championships. That's where we're at in San Diego. And since I'm 14 years older than you, it clearly has worn on me a lot more than it has you. I can remember Randy Jones being the best pitcher in the Majors, and the Padres still couldn't manage a winning record. I can remember the Chargers having arguably the best team in the league from '79-'81 and couldn't make the Super Bowl. I can remember TWO Basketball teams up and leaving the city. The Padres finally got to the World Series in '84, but faced up against an All Time Top 20 team and got crushed. The Chargers make it to the Super Bowl, and faced off against a team that cheated on the salary cap to get there! Then the Padres finally got back to the World Series, and faced one of the 3 best teams of all time and, again, got crushed. Since then? Nothing but losing or crushing disappointment. PTSD, man. PTSD.

With how crazy prices are on this market, I wonder what you could get for Blake Snell.

Josh Hader to the Padres. For Rogers? And others?

Taylor Rogers, Dinelson Lamet, Robert Gasser, and Esteury Ruiz
Rogers had fallen off the bus, Lamet was run over by it, and really, Gasser was the only one on that list I'm sorry to see on the bus.
Hader's much better than he's shown this season. Maybe the change in scenery will help snap him back to more career like performance numbers.

Hader > Rogers - it's a downgrade for the Brewers' roster, for sure.
Now get someone who can hit a baseball hard and consistently…

But you get an extra year of control. Yeah but at an estimated $15M in arbitration next year. This deal does not help us from a salary standpoint, and its (about) salary neutral this year. This deal is terrible. We have bullpen help coming and Rodgers was a solid reliever. Not a good closer, but so what? Garcia/Pomeranz.. Not to mention, we don't need a closer right now - we need bats. And we need salary relief so that we can resign more of our good players, like Clevinger. Not to mention Hader has an ERA in the 4's this year. He's a good closer but why do we have to have Ruiz in this deal?? I would have loved to trade Grisham for value and use Ruiz as a cheap CF, with the option to put Abrams in CF. God I hate this deal. We give up a cheap controllable asset in Ruiz (important when you are trying to land Soto, are resigning Musgrove, etc), and we give them 3 pitchers for an upgrade at reliever? Preller isn't seeing the bigger picture - this deal is awful.
