What's the short list of bats that the Padres could try to acquire before the deadline?
The Padres probably need a deal that keeps them where they are at salary cap wise, or lowers their burden.
Difficulty here is that rebuilding teams are also often trying to shed salary.
Some people are talking about Bryan Reynolds - such a deal might involve Myers being sent to Pittsburgh. Nick Martinez also seems like a possibility. Last season the price for Reynolds was sky high.
Andrew Benintendi's salary is a good half year rental. Wonder what price he will command on the open market in the offseason.
It does seem like the Padres could really use an outfielder that they control for several years, so that they can afford to shell out money to retail one of our starting pitchers in the FA market this offseason. In that sense Reynolds makes a lot of sense. Wonder what the asking price is now. I would assume it involves Hassell + some more prospects. Getting a guy like Reynolds would give us more options in FA.
Will Hassell be ready for the show next year, or will it be in 2024?
How long will it take for Abrams to figure out hitting at the major league level? He could always be moved to center or right.

They've inquired on Hays, Mancini, Mullins, Contreras, Happ, Reynolds, Benintendi, Soler, Cooper, Ramirez and others. They are probably more inclined to look at rentals given the CBT concerns, unless they can shed salary and get creative on a deal with multiple moving parts. Costs are still very high. Hassell's more likely an early 2024 candidate at this point, still has to get to Double-A and more advanced pitching. As for Abrams, he had barely 40 games above A-ball coming into this year. He's going to be a star.

Market is still pretty quiet (publicly) but the sense is that the Padres will try and trade Hosmer before the deadline, as they see CJ Abrams as the second baseman of the future. Would expect Robert Hassell and Luis Campusano to be heavily discussed in talks as the team will not move Abrams or James Wood.

I would hate to see them trade Hassell, I'm fine shopping Campusano. If we had more real bats in the lineup, our two catchers would be more than enough. I'm surprised they haven't tried Ruiz up here yet.

The point about Hosmer brings up an interesting question. Are there any good first basemen that the Padres are interested in trading for? Are any of them on a team that would take Hosmer's salary? While Abrams would be a great second basemen, it's nice having a power hitter at second in Cronenworth, and potentially getting another big bat at first.

Interesting news about Andrew Benintendi - he's on the restricted list (no Covid vax) along with NINE others from the Royals. Yankees are said to no longer be interested in pursuing him before the trade deadline. Presumably, Toronto's out, too.
Benintendi is one of the 'hot 10' tradable players this month.

I'm not sure how Toronto could use Benintendi: "Foreign workers: Travel restrictions and exemptions As a foreign worker, you must qualify as a fully vaccinated traveller to enter Canada, unless you have a job in 1 of the following categories: Agricultural or food processing worker Marine crew member Make medical deliveries Work with medical equipment or devices" travel.gc.ca/travel-covid/travel-restrictions/visitors-workers-students?wbdisable=true

Seems like they need more than hope. Maybe a few prayers?
Toronto could also just be yanking the Yankees' chains…

I'd love Josh Bell and Ian Happ because we're not getting Soto with CJ and Gore injured.

GM's are pretty split 50/50 on if Soto even gets traded before the deadline. Good news is that Rizzo publicly rejected the idea that they are requiring teams to take Corbin and his salary as part of the deal. Bad news is the Gore injury - CJ is fine. But still... 50/50 that he gets trades or not, and let's say IF Soto is traded, odds by team that they get Soto (these are just guesses): Cardinals 30% Padres 25% Giants 15% Mariners 10% Mets 5% Astros 5% Dodgers 5% Yankees 5% .50 * .25 = .125, or a 12.5% chance that we get SotoIf I was to bet, I would bet on Ian Happ being our right fielder here pretty soon.
