DT had a good game against Creighton but still think Lamont is overall a better player on both ends of the court and especially his defense over DT's
Yes DT did make 1 of 2 FT's that really helped make him the MVP of the South Region
IMO there are numerous areas that he really needs to work on - and hope he does . And not just scoring but his over all play and decision making - maybe watch film of the Kansas State Guard
He has trouble staying in front of his man on defense and he relies on getting steals
Aztecs do have freshmen BJ Davis and Miles Bryd - will they need to ad another guard or would a good one even come with 2 starters coming back or will they need to add in other positions - there are only so many scholarships and hope they can use them wisely .
But do appreciate your thoughts -

First, he wasn't MVP of the south region because he "did make 1 of 2 FT's". Not even close. He AVERAGED 17 points a game with an eFG% of 53%, and averaged 5 rebounds per game while playing excellent D. He was ELITE! He was 3rd team ALL TOURNAMENT, along with Lamont. He DEFINITELY stays in front of his man. He's in their grill. He's quick. He's disruptive. He positions himself well. He struggled some defensively earlier in the year, but not once we hit February. Offensively he really came into his own down the stretch. Imagine that for 5 months next year! There's no doubt his comfort level will be higher. He was among our top 5 players on the season, per Miya & Torvik. There's a reason he played more minutes than anyone, and it's not because he's the best shape. Without him, we're not in the Final 4, and maybe not even the S16. He's an integral part of this team. Every player has areas they need to improve on, including Darrion. And Lamont. And Ledee. Etc. But to think we wouldn't want him back...that's just...insane.

Apologize for side tracking the BJ Davis thread
But IMO DT has a lot to improve on for a player that has now played 4 years - think there were better guards Aztecs could have gotten last year and wonder if they will have to add one this up coming season - could it be difficult if it seems the Aztecs have 2 starting guards returning

I was big time down on Darrion coming into the end of regular season, to the point of where a big part of me was hoping that we would recruit over him and he’d come off the bench next season in more of a limited, 6th man/microwave role. If he was good, he plays more, if not, have a seat.
He completely won me over and changed my mind… complete 180.
Not only was he tremendous- including very good on D… the deeper we got into the postseason… the bigger the stage, the brighter the lights … he continued to get even better. He was a HUGE reason we went in that historical run. Dude is an Aztec legend now, deservedly so.
He was not only not affected or intimidated… he was an absolute baller. Some of our guys were affected by the pressure and the big stage .. not DT- or Lamont for that matter.
So I am ALL IN on him next season, I think we will see him consistently be the better/best version of himself.
That said, I do think we need a stud combo guard who can play great D and can score including shooting the 3. We need this to replace Matt, we need this if we have our sights on killing it again in March.
So yeah Stan, you’re swimming upstream and uphill here vs most, if not all of, not just AztecMesa, but most of Aztec Nation.

I hope you are correct
So with Lamont , DT , Miles , and BJ would you add another Guard or what other positions from the Portal

I hope you are correct So with Lamont , DT , Miles , and BJ would you add another Guard or what other positions from the Portal SG/SF scorer (incl good 3-pt %) & of course defender PF/C rim-protector (offensive threat is a bonus) Bonus: combo guard with 2+ years of eligibility If KJ leaves... an athletic PF with some ability to stretch defenses with a respectable outside shot

I’m gonna have to agree with Stan, LB is a way better point than DT, LB might sniff the nba one day he has the size and the defense, maybe the only he lacks is the speed DT has! Don’t get me wrong both are good players but at times DT forces to many shots and his defense is know where near lock down he gets bullied by bigger 1 and 2 guards and they have there way with him. DT is great when guys aren’t driving against him keep them in front he’s great but guards like Hawkins it’s just no contest….. I’d also consider making DT a 6th man for a energy transfer infusion! I’d bet he sees 15-20 per game next season!

Lamont and DT both have their weaknesses as PG’s and both have their strengths. But idk why this is being discussed in a BJ Davis thread. On BJ I don’t expect him to play much, people in here yearly have too high expectations for freshman. He’s at best going to be our 4th guard, we will clearly add 1 from the portal. I’m excited about his future potential for sure

as mentioned in another post - at last night 's Event was a former USC guard in the Portal - Reese Dixon Waters who was 6th man at USC - 9 points ppg - 3.2 assists and 30% on threes
He has already had an in home visit from Texas HC , also after him , UCLA , Kansas , Alabama
But having him spend the day with the team and then attending last night was a very good idea
He has said he intends on signing by May 10

A big guard that can defend and, hopefully, shut down bigger guards. We tend to be a little vulnerable at times with Lamont at 6’2” and Darrion at 5’9” vs bigger opposing guards. Sounds like he embraces “getting after it” on D. It will come down to if he is truly a culture fit for us - and- if he wants what we offer … there is a ton of competition for him from big time schools. Kudos to Rodney Terry for getting in for a home visit, I hope Dutcher can/will, or may be even better if the parents were along for his visit this weekend. I trust Dutch and our staff. If we want him and offer him, that tells me all I need to know.

would guess that he or most of the other quality guys are looking for an opportunity to play at least 25 minutes a game but as mentioned is a very good defender . there is also a 6'5" guard from WSU T.J Bamba 13 points , 4 rebounds , 37% on Threes
