how can you start 3 guards when they are 6'1" , 6'2" and 6'3" unless you have very strong guys that can defend and rebound at both 4 and 5 positions - major problem last year rebounding and defending 3 guards are not starting, and rebounding/defense was good down stretch with Mensah in starting lineup. Offense was the problem

Offense was the problem Defense and rebounding were a problem with a starting lineup that featured Mitchell at the four, Jordan at the three, and McDaniels at the five. If we roll out a team with three guards, Mitchell/ Arop at the four, and Mensah at the five we will struggle. Those struggles will start with defense and rebounding.

Why is everyone thinking we will start the 3 new guards? 2 will start and one will come off the bench. We will struggle with defense until the new backcourt figures it out. Hemsley was very good at defense, Watson not so much. Sieko even less. Will the new backcourt be better at defense by the end of the season? That is why they play the games.

I agree that they won’t be going with a 3 guard set. I am far more concerned with the front court than the backcourt

Agree, if Nate gets hurt.....
Also, at this time, there is no replacement for Jalen. I still don't see us going to 3 guards. My guess is that we would use Arop to replace Jalen.

If I am not mistaken, the coaching staff is still very much in recruiting mode. Talking about what the roster will look like on Nov. 1st on April 29th is a futile exercise. Well, I mean, do whatever you want, but I will wait until the recruiting window for the 19-20 season has closed to comment on what the lineups will look like. Pretty sure that there will be at least one more big man added before we start practicing in October.

People are way too confident in Arop’s ability to thrive in a starting role next year. He showed some promise but it is by no means a slam dunk that he’ll develop into the kind of player that you want playing 25 plus minutes as your primary PF. An Aguek and Nate front court would be bad.

An Aguek and Nate front court would be bad. I would have argued this point with you BEFORE he got injured... but now I firmly agree that we can't rely on Arop to be a strong contributor as a starter. Maybe he'll heal super-quickly and surprise me, but if he's still in rehab come Sept/Oct, then development-wise he's going to be playing catchup all season and better suited to being 2nd or 3rd man off the bench at the 3/4 (still a VERY valuable role).

Also, lots of teams will fill roster spots DURING, instead of before the summer... so doubly not obvious.

Strongly disagree, they didn't sign a JC player to sit on the bench. If you read the most recent article from Zeigler is it clear he is going to be part of the rotation with KJ and Flynn (I suspect they will actually start all 3). The specifically recruited him for his ability to play off screens. Not saying he won't get minutes, just saying you can't rely on it to be effective minutes. The Aztecs coaches seem to think so...based on this article it sure seems like Pulliam will be counted on to provide effective minutes. www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/aztecs/story/2019-04-25/sdsu-aztecs-basketball-kj-feagin-trey-pulliam-malachi-flynn

Has any coach ever signed a player without the expectation that he would some day make a contribution?

I think that he was signed with the expectation that he’s better than Seiko, a low bar indeed.

I think that he was signed with the expectation that he’s better than Seiko, a low bar indeed. ...which would then make him a top 8 rotation player. I also think Seiko will be good bench guy throughout his career, he was only a RSF and played double-digit minutes behind two guys that didn't come out much. He had a great rep for defense coming out of high school and though he didn't shoot much, was 70% FT / 37% from 3.

When Mitchell and Schakel were starting there literally were no other options to spell either of our starting guards. Schakel missed a handful of games leaving us with only one wing and two guards not named Adam. Who were the coaches going to bring in when Watson or Hemsley went to the bench? Ed? Joel? Narain? Seiko seemed to have been on a short leash. If the coaches didn’t tell him “get in there but for the love of god don’t try to do anything” he certainly played like they had. With an increase in volume and aggression I would expect his turnovers to increase and his shooting percentages to do the opposite. Sure, he was described as a defensive stopper in HS but he was also older and more physically mature than his opponents.

Sieko was a "glue guy" in HS and played on a Top 3 nationally ranked team at Sierra Canyon with Marvin Bagley(Duke) Cody Riley (UCLA) Remy Martin (ASU) Marcus Bagley, Devearl Ramsey (Nev/UCSB) . He didn't score alot, didn't rebound or assist, but did the intangibles and always defended the best offensive guard/wing. He has good size at 6'3 190, my fear is that he will never be JJ or Dakarai. He doesn't have offensive instinct, and we're going to need scoring. He doesnt rebound on the defensive glass either. He is a solid defender for a RS-F, however, never had to score in H.S. He is a very positive and upbeat dude, likeable.
