Here is the official policy of AztecMesa. Anything that refers to San Diego State University, be it sports related or not, is appropriate for this board. And, I might add, the president of the University plays a key role in the area of intercollegiate athletics at SDSU. WLR Nice call stretch ....so why on the first page do we have sub-forums? I guess they aren't needed ...so drop them Why did we put the player from WSU in the recruit section and not here? Wonders never cease? Why do you care? Just skip the thread....

Note to moderator: read the Post above dropping down into the slime to a discussion of McCathyism. Is that where SDSU athletics should go on your now lame board? Is that where you wanted a discussion of the SDSU president to go in a sports chat room? What I'm glad about is the lame brains above don't know where most of us are reading now about just Aztec sports. You might consider showing some leadership, some management skill on your "sports" board. LOL! Why are you even here if you think it's so lame? Classic...

Basically it boils down to his lack of meaningful response. Same sort of posters were put up by the ultra-right hate group on other campuses, but their administrations condemned them strongly. Hirshman not only failed to do that, but even his weaksauce response took 2 weeks before he issued it. He basically sided with a guy who has been called out by the SPLC as a modern hate-leader over his own students. Not a good look. BTW, the posters are essentially modern-day McCarthyism in poster form. Naming students who criticize Israel's policies as somehow aligned with Hamas & terrorism. That's messed up in all sorts of ways. I'm very disappointed in Hirshman's response as well, which amounted to, "Hey - criticize Israel and you get what's coming to you." Anyway...my 2 cents. The irony of anyone from the Students for Justice in Palestine, the National Action Network, or the Council for American-Islamic Relations complaining about hatred and intolerance is...astonishing. It's so scary to see students so willing to toss aside freedom of speech because they don't agree with the message - these people will one day run the country. Please do explain. Not sure how that's astonishing. Horowitz is a documented extremist. The SPLC has a file on him a mile thick. The posters amounted to defamation and slander. Hirshman decided to defend them, but other universities condemned them quickly.

I simply point out that those organizations are the last groups that should ever talk about hatred and intolerance - they are filled with it.

"It's ok for me to speak my mind, but you can't say what's on yours because it offends me." Except that it's not free speech that has people upset. Slander & defamation are not protected forms of speech. The posters named students as aligned with terrorist groups simply because of their disagreement with Israeli government policies. Policies that plenty of Jewish people oppose as well. That's not protected speech, and has nothing to do with the sorts of faux manufactured outrages we see on college campuses from time to time (which even as a left-leaning person, annoy the hell out of me quite often). This is an actual legit problem and needs to be treated as such. For example, if someone were to take a conservative's position on immigration and make posters saying that individual has aligned themselves with the Ku Klux Klan, and then place them up all over the person's school, business, and neighborhood THAT wouldn't be OK either. This is on par with that. Would the argument be made that the people making such posters were just exercising their free speech? Doubtful.

This is on par with out of town people who wanted to change our mascot because they didn't like the general idea of what it stood for. No way should our president or other presidents resign due to this nonsense. It was started to get their cause heard/supported. SDSU should resist the urge to overact to a group, whose main goal is to get a reaction.

The posters said the students supported the movement to divest, a movement created by groups that are terrorists. They used words that are true. How is it slander? Slander = the action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person's reputation. The students do support the movement to divest. If Hamas supports the movement to divest, and the students support the same movement, aren't they aligned? Using your KKK example. The conservative, (I hope you aren't putting all conservatives in a single box) would have the opportunity to explain how they are not aligned with the KKK. The students have the same opportunity. They (the words on the posters) are only words. Words are protected by the 1st. BTW, have you ever seen the "Wall" that similar groups have set up on campus. I have and it was sickening. The vile words, and hate was awful. But, the administration allowed it, because they encourage free speech. www.attheedges.com/2011/02/25/palestine-awareness-week-at-san-diego-state-university/

That is the wonder to me. There is a policy but to expect the Mods to agonize over little piddlin' crap is childish. Why insist on making it hard on those willing to provide this site? We should simply thank them from time to time. Thanks William.

Bearfoot commented: "The posters said the students supported the movement to divest, a movement created by groups that are terrorists."
That is a flat out lie. The movement to divest in Israel due to its continued handling of the occupied territories has been going on for years. The Presbyterian and Methodist Churches were early proponents of divesture. Does Bearfoot think the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches are terrorist organizations?

This is on par with that. Would the argument be made that the people making such posters were just exercising their free speech? Doubtful. Agreed to an extent. However, I don't agree so much on the free speech vs. "libel" bit though (as better illustrated by another post in this thread). Any chance you might be a little more sympathetic to one of the causes and not the other? As a nation, we've been taught to support one of these sides for years through dogmatic political actions. Anyway, the problem as I see it, is that yet again, it's simply a couple of groups that never have, nor ever will, be able to co-habitate. The fact that they're able to bring their thousands-of-miles-away and thousands-of-years-old fight to a campus like SDSU is ridiculous. But I suppose it's not all ridiculous, maybe just ironic; this is one of a few places in the world that allows/tolerates behavior like what has been displayed. It certainly wouldn't be allowed in any of the regions where the "protesters" are from. Heck, they wouldn't be in the same vicinity. I suppose I'll never understand though; I'm not a terrorist nor am I pointing out who is. These "groups" want us to choose a side, each one claiming they are the correct one. I don't even think we need to dive too deep into what's considered free speech or what's considered libel/slander, etc. in this case. There will never be a right or wrong as long as each of these groups exist.
