4.9 Assists/Game
That is more than our top 3 returning Assist players. We really haven't had a point guard that can create for anyone but himself in a long time.

From the article, the finalists are SDSU, Kansas, Cal, and UNLV. I don't think UNLV has a chance simply because they are a dumpster fire right now (but who knows ). He was already getting significant playing time at USF so I think he wants to go to a team that can compete and win. I do hope that Derryck Thornton lands at Kansas, which would leave just SDSU and Cal as his final 2. Cal already has a PG verbal commit for 2017 as well as a sophmore JUCO commit coming in this year.

Watson would have to sit out and have two years of eligibility, which puts him in the same graduating class as Hemsley. Would he be a good fit? I think either Hemsley or Watson would have to split time at SG.

I think either Hemsley or Watson would have to split time at SG. Exactly. Just don't see Watson as a good fit as long as Germ is onboard. UNLV on the other hand... sits out next season and then has two years left to be THE MAN (on what should be an improving team at that point).

Assists per 40 minutes5.6 Watson 2.7 Hemsley 2.0 Kell Watson/Hemsley/Kell would be a nice backcourt in 2017-2018 after Shrigley/Allen/Williams are gone. Last year Shepard had about the same number of assists as Hemsley and Kell combined - 113 v 122. We need a player to step up and create some shots for our scorers who can not do that for themselves. Assisted 3 point tries (and 2s) are successful at a far higher rate.

I think either Hemsley or Watson would have to split time at SG. In 2018 we'd basically have a 4 man rotation for 3 spots with Watson, Kell, Germ & Teki, with Kell & Teki playing the 3. Germ definitely is a combo & could play the 2 (check out Kansas as just 1 example). Max could slide over to the 3 as well, but he's more a 3/4, so won't need all too many minutes as the 3. That's 120 minutes to split, or around 25-35 per player. Very doable.
In 2019 Kell's gone, so it's Watson, Germ & Teki, plus whoever else we've added.
We have and use flexible line-ups. No one is pigeonholed into being classified a '1' or a '2'. You want talent, and Watson has proved he's talented. He'd fit. He'd be the only true PG on the roster as of today.
PS. Watson, Germ & Teki would be a 3-senior guard starting line-up. Teams with 3 seniors handling the ball the most have a tendency to do very well.

Jemarl Baker is viewed as a combo, some like him more as a SG.

He would give us tremendous depth and flexibility in the backcourt for the 2017-18 season. And then, assuming Hemsley and Teki are still here as seniors, maybe the best backcourt in the entire west/among best in the country with Watson/Hemsley/Gill-Caesar.
Its silly to think about now, but still fun to imagine how stacked and experienced our starters could be in 2018-19 if all were still here and healthy.
Watson(Sr), Hemsley(Sr), Gill-Caesar(Sr), Cheatham(Sr), Narain(Jr)

So is he the best guard recruit we would have for 2017 ? including HS guys the coaches are looking at this summer .? On the other hand ,he would be locked in for 2017 ?

Realistically yes, he average 20.3 PPG on 54.1 TS%, and did it against a slightly below average schedule per basketball reference. I am a bit concerned about his defense as he had 0 blocks in 1700+ career minutes, shows a lack of athleticism plus potentially he doesn't close out. Gets to the line a lot, though him shooting better than 73% would be nice.

Interestingly, in those 5 we'll be losing a 1, 2/3, 4 & 5 in William, Allen/Shrigs, Pope & Izundu, meaning we wouldn't be looking to load at any 1 position in 2017. Watsons gives us depth at PG (3-deep), meaning we could sign a 2017 PG who wouldn't necessarily have to be polished. He could learn from Watson for a year or two before being asked to step into the rotation.
My guess is we'd look to sign 3 HS recruits in the 2017 class, and then add 1 trad-transfer, but time will tell. If Perez decides to stick around next year he could also be in line to earn a scholarship for 2018, taking 1 of those 5.
We'll see. Good stuff nonetheless.

If we sign Watson I don't expect us to add another PG in 2017 I would. A 2-year gap at the position is fine, although it might deter a few who want instant starting/big minutes.
We'd be ripe for a player like Hemsley who's more of a combo than point, as Kell would be a senior, opening up big minutes when they're a Soph.

We are ripe for wings, not a guy that can play point. Between Watson and Hemsley they'd get all of the PG minutes

We would be a top 10 team in the country if Watson committed to SDSU.
We would be so deep, so athletic, so many scorers, and still an exceptionally quality defensive team.

If Watson comes (and I'm not saying he will or won't just playing the hypothetical) and Pope leaves before then, in 2017-2018 this would be the scholarship roster assuming no transfers left on the team.
Freshman: None, from the sounds of things Jalen McDaniels is ready to contribute to what level who knows, but even if we get Izundu I do not see him redshirting.
Sophomore: PF: Nolan Narain (redshirt year used) PF: Jalen Mcdaniels
Juniors: PG: Devin Watson (redshirt year used) PG: Jeremy Hemsley SG/SF: MGC (redshirt year used) PF: Zylan Cheatham SF/PF: Max Hoetzel (redshirt year used)
Seniors: SG Trey Kell We need to bring in a center, and 2 wings at least to start. And it's doubtful we will use all 13 scholarships unless we get multiple high level transfers.
BTW assuming we get some decent depth around that, that team could be very special.
