Not sure why some posters are being so hard on Shrigley. The guy supposedly worked his rear off last off season and was doing really well when he tore his ACL. Then came back and played in LESS than 6 months. That is incredible. He obviously was not sharp and not up to speed when he came back. Now he may not have the mentality to be a no conscious shooter and confident like Kobe Bryant, but I would definitely not write him off at this point since he could still be a very good shooter for the Aztecs. Sometimes seniors play at a high level knowing this is their last season.
Actually I find it funny when posters write off players and predict who will start since they are usually wrong.

I find it odd that fans expect a fifth year senior to develop his game in his final offseason. When we signed Shrigley, most fans expected, right or wrong, a good long range shooter. He has had some terrible luck with injuries and has not yet shown himself to be a big time outside shooting threat.

Yea, X, JJ & AQ didn't improve at all heading into their 5th year so why would anyone else, right?
I find it odd when fans dismiss history or fail to figure out that roles changes year to year, or forget to take into account the fact a severe injury happened may have tempered the improvement seen over the prior off-season.

Senioritis is very real in college basketball, especially since roles change. Once Matt worked off the rust last year he was a solid player. I would have loved to have seen what would have happened had he not suffered the freak injury. Hopefully he can stay healthy and take his game to the next level, like MANY players have done before him. If not, I'll take Matt shooting 38% from deep on the season & giving us another outside threat any time.
Agree on the starting line-up. It's fun to speculate, but to dismiss anyone who's been part of the rotation & relegating them to the back end of the bench is pretty funny. As is putting a player who's never played a minute in the starting line-up based solely on the recruiting rating.

It's only natural for fans to get excited about new players and their never before seen on court talent and skills. We have seen many of our returning players many years. Most of those players will be using the same skills to play the same roles that we have witnessed many times. He JJ was always JJ. He didn't suddenly develop new skills. He was able to do a variety of things on the court and improved some in those areas over the years. X Thames made a huge leap in his senior season and largely because his skill set required him to play a ball dominant role to be fully expressed.

JJ improved his outside shooting considerably over the last year and his passing even improved, as did his leadership skills. X improved light years, bolstered by the fact he was given more responsibility and the confidence which comes with being a 5th year senior. The same that many 5th year seniors acquire in their last year. AQ jumped light years as well.
A key component of growth typically seen is greater consistency, so fewer bad games & more good ones. It's very reasonable to assume seniors will improve over their junior years for a variety of reasons. Historically that's been the case.

maybe combine the two threads about Izundu into 1 . Stay on topic and start new one if wanted about 5th year senior Matt and not as part of recruiting section ?

To be clear, I am not trashing any of our current players. I am hoping that our vets improve in areas in which they've shown flashes of competence and skill and that our new guys who have been purported to have abilities not seen on the Mesa for awhile all pan out next season. Kell, Hemsley, and to a lesser degree Pope have shown that they can score in a variety of ways including knocking down jumpers. With Teki, Narain, and Hoetzel coming in this year we could have a team that plays differently than our most recent teams. Adding a healthy Shrigley, an improving Allen, and a sophomore jump from Zylan; we may finally be able to punish teams that pack the paint and dare us to shoot from mid and long range. Once we force our opponents to respect our abilities on the outside, we could see driving lanes open up for our slashers.

Not sure who is being so hard on Shrigley, Shrigley has worked his ass off no doubt, but the results speak for themself. I hope he can become some big impact guy Bill and SDCoug think he is, but there is little reason to think he will. Starters are near impossible to predict going forward on the wing, but Shrigley is not a part of that conversation, he's a bench player on any high major team (and no I'm not talking the WSU/Rutgers of the world)
