I really like Zeigler's work. But I think he was off base a little in criticizing the student section a this point in the season. It looks like, to me, that the student section is fuller than the rest of the arena. I agree that more students should be showing up, but more of our season ticket holders should be showing up as well. But, I think that percentage wise the students are slightly ahead. I don't believe there is any way they are significantly behind. Citing that the student's section was 2/3 full is not criticism. It was the same way last Saturday. I wonder if it has to do with needing a Red ID to accompany a ticket to get in. I suppose a question might be, how many in previous seasons were actually students? I consider the Show, as those down in front who are always there.

two thirds full! I remember too well when the student section had 50-100 students. It's the start of a holiday week, kids go home to be with family. I am much more disappointed with all of the other empty seats, I'd guess about 1/2 full on Monday. Also, for the first time I was really disappointed to see my fellow blue hairs bailing with 8 minutes left. Here was a team that took a giant step forward from one of the worst games played in years to one of the best. The kids should have been rewarded with cheers from everyone there, not bye-bye waves. I feel the crowd was with the team and did support their effort, tho!. As for the show-----right now I don't see the kinds of "leaders" the early show had. It isn't as spontanious with cheers and jeers. It is using the tried and true, on the tired side. Those of you who have been around should remember "cape & cowboy hat"," Ned afro", original show girls, gecko, dora fedora, nana, luchador, and others. They brought more freshness to the show. IMO, the show needs to freshen up. It's still great, just getting stale. Ideas? / none, I'm a blue hair.

I sure didn't want to do that when I was there and was happy to go along with whatever was going on up front. However, there is definitely less energy in the student section this season thus far. I'd be ok with an average student section--whatever they bring to the experience is a bonus for me at this point. But I no longer bring people to the games and tell them to keep an eye on The Show.

I could be mistaken, but it seems this this type of noise has popped up before in regards to games around Thanksgiving and students on campus. Not really an issue, to me.

I'd guess that there were around 10K+ in the house.
As for blue hairs leaving early, as one I am slightly offended when this has been brought up, so last night I decided to take a good look at who was in the wave of leaving early folks. About 20% blue hairs (55 and up) about 60% in the middle, (30 - 55) and 20% youngsters.

Classic problem of a leadership vacuum. Those loose band of rebels who formed the original show were visionary leaders in their own right. The problem is they all graduated (well, lets just assume that!!! ;-) ) and it's tough to find that level of tenacity year over year. While the students have been exceptional year over year in terms of showing up, the things that made the show great like costumes, big heads, unique chants, have gradually disappeared. They still cheer louder and longer than us blue-hairs up in the stands, so that's all good. Folks in the seats around us were pinning for the old days of Shownana, Showdora, etc...maybe make the bottom group an official on campus club and give them priority to the seats in order to entice some new leaders...or just let the flow happen naturally and maybe the season ticket holders on the other side of the arena can ban together to make up BLUEHAIRSHOW and show them whippersnappers how it's done?

Have to agree... the 'student section' and 'The Show' are definitely not one and the same. For the handful of games I've made it to over the past couple of years at Viejas... the enthusiasm in the student section drastically drops off once you get about 10-12 rows up. The guys/girls down at the bottom are great.

It was clear to me that, last night, when the joint (Viejas) got really loud, it was regular fans along the middle of the court, not at the student's end.

I consider the Show, as those down in front who are always there. a partial answer to how many originals were actually students. Of the very first show members: the leader was not a student, just a strong fan of Fisher and sdsu sports. His brother and best friend were graduates of state. They were all in their mid twenties-not kids. They were interviewed on several local sport programs. Even uncle teddy would comment on the jeers directed toward the other team without vulgarisms. Many of the first tier of show members were older students or grads. It took several years for the student body to catch on, which they did in spades. From sitting in the blue hair section you could see a steady growth in the number of students attending games. From 50-100 to a full boisterous excited base. I heard a university rep say to one of the originals, "look what you guys started," when the student section was full and rocking. I also disagree with your comment that the show is only the first 12 rows. According to the written tenents of the original show, EVERYBODY in the student section, old, new, student or not, is a member of the show, not just a few rows. All you have to do is stand and jump and yell.

The Show is living off its reputation... very average at this point. I'll throw in the ubiquitous "plateaued" mention.

One issue is making it mandatory to be a student to sit in the student section. Many of the Show's originals were alumni or members of the community. ConGod was a student when I was in the 90s.
Another is the Show now has a T-shirt most wear on game day giving it a homogenous look the oringal guys took pride in NOT doing. Hence all the crazy costumes.
The Show used to mock what it has become. It was once a band of crazy, loud fans who didn't have to be students who took pride in not looking alike like those in Cameron. Now it must be students who prefer to wear their Show shirts. That has permeated into their cookie-cutter cheers too. This was once a section who mocked an opposing coach into flipping them off, drew the anger of mainstream media and chanted "nobody likes us. We don't care."
That spirit is gone. But can be replaced with some of the solutions some of you posters suggested
