Jalen is a traditional Fisher/Hutson/Dutcher recruit. He is long and athletic and has ton of upside. He has really come on as player in his final two years. His team has been really successful. I could see him developing into a great player eventually. The fact that he grew 2-3 inches in the last year changed his upside from a solid wing to a PF/C with guard skills. He's extremely skinny because of the growth spurt but once he gets stronger he could be really good. He's not a shot blocker but his foot speed and quickness is excellent for a 6'10 player. Hope he's able to push for a few minutes next year. He still projects as a wing, for now. He is athletic for a guy of his height. He is just now figuring out what he can do on a basketball court and he is a winner.

IF both Malik returns( to play the 3 and 4 positions) . Izundu signs with the Aztecs, plays the 5 with Nolan - who is also a 4 , we would have 13 scholarships in use Watson has to red shirt . So 12 players . Possible guys that play the 5 and or 4 . Nolan , Malik , Z , , Izundu, Max and Jalen - 5 or 6 guys . Guys that play the 3 : MG-C(plays the 3 and 2 ) , Malik, Z , Max , Dakari( plays the 3 and 2) . could be 3 to 5 guys guys. IF Izundu does sign then major over load at the 4 and 3 position. Would it be advantageous for Jalen to red shirt , As Nolan did ? Also Z but it due to an injury .

We don't need a player pushed back a year. Jalen will be better in 2017-2018, 2018-2019, 2019-2020 if he doesn't redshirt. If he is really good he will leave early, if not we can reuse his scholarship easily. If he gets injured and has to sit a year after his redshirt year, he loses a year (Shrigley). If he decides to transfer, he will lose a year. If he leaves real early (Jamaal), we lose a year. All in all, I am against redshirting for no reason.

These days where it seems like 1 in 5 players transfer, first of all most players don't want to give up that option. So they don't WANT to RS their FR year (Nolan's a RARE case). They want to have that card up their sleeve in case they're not happy, so they won't lose a year.
Plus, as you note, it helps keep alive the medical hardship RS year, in case something like what happened to Shrigs happens over the summer or early in the year.
Also agree that even if he plays 5-6 minutes during OOC & the occasional game here in there during conference play he'll be more prepared than had he RS'd, and we're going to want/NEED him to be prepared for the 2018 season. We can't wait until '19 for him to contribute.

If you look ahead to 17-18 and assume Pope leaves early (assuming after junior year), our classes are very unbalanced: Seniors (1) -- Kell Juniors (5) -- Hemsley, Cheatham, MGC, Hoetzel, Watson Sophomores (2) -- Narain, McDaniels Freshmen/remaining scholarships (5) If McDaniels redshirted, we'd have potentially 6 freshman. My guess is that there could be a transfer in there somewhere so maybe we don't have a 5 man class, but I think that's also a function of how well recruiting goes for the '17 class. If the staff gets all the guys they are targeting, maybe they do go with a 5 man class. The other likely thing if they signed a full 5-man class in 17, they'd only have 1 available scholarship in '18 -- seems like maybe they'd go with a 4 man class and have at least 2 in '18 as there are already offers out in '18 (Norris, Cherry, Washington). Curious, anyone remember when/if we had a 5 freshman class? The closest of recent memory was the Pope/Zylan/Kell/Zabo class with 4.

The closest of recent memory was the Pope/Zylan/Kell/Zabo class with 4. 2017 recruiting is solved by taking a graduate transfer or two to add to Kell's class and a normal transfer who could be added to our current freshman if they have 3 to play 2. That way we could add 3 freshmen. That is much easier and will result in a better class (average). We could also add 3 freshman, a transfer, and save a scholarship.

I think that option goes away this summer; at least that's what I've heard. They're going to change so all transfers must sit 1 year. We'll see if that passes.
Definitely ways to work around it. Just take 2 regular transfers & 2-3 HS recruits, and you boost Narain/McD class to 4 & FR class is 3.
Another possible option, albeit less likely, is Perez RS's next year & is promised a scholarship for '17-18 school year, putting him in Narain/McD's class as well. Unlikely because it takes away his transfer option down the road, but if he's committed to staying here next year he's not going to see the court too often anyway, and he's already faced conference competition so sitting doesn't hurt his learning curve as much.

I don't think that you give up a scholarship for an extra year when the player in question isn't good enough to be a major contributor. If you can recruit, you simply recruit a player who can contribute.

His best chance is Malik staying in the draft or us not signing another big. Sorry but you are mistaken bruh. He is good but he will see very little mins if any if none of those things that I mentioned above don't happen. He definitely needs to add some strength and weight to his body especially after his last growth spurt.

although balance is great to have 3 or so in each year . More important for the program is to continue to recruit high level HS players . Transfers should be to fill a need or two , not the back bone of the program. Quality still needs to come first .
Grad transfers - student athletes who actually attend classes and graduate should be rewarded . Does Izundu deserve to play at a school of his choice for his senior season .IMO yes If Matt and chooses to graduate this summer and go another school for his senior season so he could start , shouldn't he be allowed to ? These are not superstars but students who have graduated , who may want a better situation .
Ben Perez ,had the opportunity to show case his abilities . Either he decides to transfer or stay with SDSU as a walk on . I would hope we can recruit some guys with even better talent moving forward . Message should be evident we brought in MG-C and Watson .
Jalen and red shirt: it only happens if both Jalen and the coaches think it is the best thing for Jalen and the team . We have 12 scholarship players- IF Izundu and Malik are both on the team .A lot of guys up front , He is a top 100 player , athletic 6'9" or 6'10" but only about 185 pounds ( Dakari 's weight ) would it benefit him to do the same thing Nolan did this year , add to his frame and practice against the guys .? or play ? Coaches will see him at the Summer School and fall practices with plenty of time to come to a decision as to what is best for Jalen and the team . If he says No , as Jamaal did then there is no red shirt .
