Maybe Pope should redshirt Not a bad idea both need to bulk up.McDaniels needs to bulk up to play power forward and Pope could play center. Now that would be awesome!

Hmmm...seems a bit slow off the dribble...and finger rolls (ala Winston) a little too much for my tastes...
Really hard to tell as he was easily the biggest player on the court which won't be the case in D1 ball...
It was only one tape (and it didn't show any defense)...but I suspect that he might be best served to red-shirt. The one thing that new players seem to agree on...the college game is played with so much more speed and athleticism...just to learn the defensive and offensive sets along with the nomenclature can be a slow learning curve for a lot of freshmen...
I'll take a "wait and see" attitude on JM for the time being

Only way he RS is if we add 2 more bigs. We will add a PF/C 5th year senior next year. If not, Norain and cheatham can hold their own on the block with pope and Hotzel also 6'9+ We will always have 2 players in the game at least 6'9 with 3 big guards. We might lose size, but not toughness and we gain a ton offensively. We'll be so much better ... Although smaller.

Max isn't 6'9 though but is a smart player and at 6'8 he will be fine. Can play 3/4, like Pope. But think McD is the extra guy in that rotation, and will play to develop in NC in case he's needed due to foul trouble/injury in conference play. PS. Assuming there is a grad transfer available.

As you ask , we will not know if there will be a quality grad transfer available until March/ April ,after teams are done with their season ,plus do they want to play at SDSU ? We did not have much luck signing Cage, Kone, Stanfield .... this past year's HS options at the 5 We lose Skylar , Angelo , Winston down low . A lot of muscle , Defense , Rebounding . Nolan is a 4 learning the 5 position , could be our best shooting 5 in a very long time but not sure about his D or rebounding, learning is great but game time is different. Zylan is still learning to play against tall strong opponents , could he guard Zimmerman at UNLV if he stays ? Jalen is very lean 6'9" 180 pounds same weight as Dakari, has said he prefers to play away from the basket . Malik is more suited to play 3 then the 5 . Max another 3 - has primarily been a spot shooter similar to Matt . Could Leonard Allen provide some assistance ?
After PG the hardest transition for a HS , JC or even grad transfer is a guy coming in to play the 5 position or even the 4 . They are Not used to playing against quality guys the same height or weight or speed . They do not see that many in HS , JC or other lower level conferences - where we got our last two grad transfers that play down low .
What are we hoping for the 2016-17 team ? Good chance we play Utah in Hawaii T , will they have a quality 5 ? What is goal for the team win MW conference . Decent OOC ? SW16 or better ? If so then we could face some teams with quality front line .

2 points of interest: 1) The story lists him at 6'10 now 2) He was a football player until he got too tall
I'm not saying he's suddenly a dominate post player, but he grew about 5 inches in the last 18 months and his high school teams "post" player was injured all year forcing him to learn "inside" skills. The fact that he is a football player at heart is great for inherited toughness too. He just had a crazy growth spurt and will now fill out that frame. By his soph year I would expect him to be around 210 and a solid backup big.
But Next year ...I expect cheatham to be 6'9 225, pope to be 6'10 215 and Norain 6'9 225. J McD can take his time to mature.

He has a frame very similar to Metu IMO, who is adapting QUITE well. He's around 6'11 & 210-215 ish, so 6'9/6'10 & 205-210 would be fine.

He seems to fit the mold of very athletic guys . Do hope he can add some additional muscle to his frame . Would guess that after PG . Transition for a guy that plays the 5/4 position in HS then on to D1 college basketball is most difficult . Guys do not get opportunity to play against other quality guys with equivalent size or speed. Zylan has had a learning curve this year even as red shirt freshman . So not sure how much we can expect from Jalen next year . It will help that PG JH will have a year of experience . Nolan will also be a red shirt freshman next year .

McDaniels is the best player on the best team in Washington. www.thenewstribune.com/sports/high-school/article61008302.htmlNo. 1 Federal Way 58, Kentwood 48: When Jalen McDaniels impacts both ends of the floor, the Eagles do what they’ve done every game this season. Win. He scored a game-high 27 points to send top-ranked Federal Way (24-0) to the 4A district title game for the second consecutive year. And he had Kentwood coach Blake Solomon scratching his head afterward. “He’s a crazy mismatch,” Solomon said of the 6-foot-10 San Diego State signee. “He’s so long and athletic and he plays like a guard. But the biggest thing he does for them is he defends anything and everything. It makes it impossible for our guys. We got what we wanted, but he would either block or change it.” And then in the second half he was hitting turnaround jumpers from the post. “It’s impossible to guard him at that point,” Solomon said.

McD has BIG upside, which is why he exploded last year. He was the best guy on their team last year as well. Can't wait for him to get here & be able to compare his game to Z's and others. I think those expecting him to RS are writing him off WAY too soon.
The only thing I'd disagree with is that the best teams in the state of WA play 3A, not 4A, and the best team is Garfield, even though I still think Beach takes the state 3A title. Fed is very, very good & definitely the top 4A team, but probably the 3rd/4th best team in the state overall. Which goes to show the level of talent in that state.
I do wish WA allowed their top 4A & 3A teams to play for the overall state title at the end of the day. Would be very interesting. We could even see McD heads up against the hated Keith Smith. : )

Very difficult to judge most of the taller players , in many states that do not have many other taller players to compete against . No doubt he is a very athletic quality player . But next to the PG , a guy playing the 5 or 4 position in HS faces a difficult transition time as they start college basketball . Physical , mental , speed , travel, school work,... parts of the college game vs HS . For many of the taller players it does take longer . High Ceiling for growth . Zylan was a great HS recruit . Red shirted last year . Worked his way up to starter but has his ups and downs this year . Also we are losing a lot of experience in the front court next year , for leadership . So far our front line seems fairly inexperienced for 2016 , add up the minutes played in college by Nolan , Zylan , Malik , Dakari, Max not that many teachers there . Does Rivals adjust their ratings for 2016 recruits at the end of the year ? Believe he was rated somewhere between 75 and 100 to start the 2015-16 HS season ? Where will he be rated at the end of HS this year ?

I am of the opinion that no one should redshirt. Fisher wanted Jamaal Franklin to redshirt. I am sure glad he didn't. If a player redshirts, he loses the chance to get playing time in his freshman year which would make him better the following year. If he is good enough to leave early, playing his freshman year costs the team nothing. If he is not good enough to go early, we should be able to find a replacement that matches his level. If he later has an injury, he totally loses a year of play. If the dream scenario occurs and he is ready to have a really good season as a 5th year senior, he probably will have a degree and could opt to play anywhere he likes.

Yes shorter players such as Jamal at 6-5 are more risky three star players to redshirt than a 6-9 or 6-10 as the taller players tend to need more time to get NBA ready. So I agree and disagree with you.
