Alta Marea re-opened on Jan 17 after an extensive remodel. Better than ever. Need to get their phone number up and running then. But yes, I've had it in the past, and its pretty good. And I've had the BEST Italian food known to man.

Some repeats on my list and a couple not mentioned yet. 1) Carnitas Snack Shack. Seriously just do it. I actually haven't been but too many of my most reliable foody's rave about it. It will be happening for me in the next couple weeks. I hear the triple threat samdwich is a must. 2) Bluewater Seafood. Best fish tacos in town. 3) South Beach Bar and Grille. Across the street from Hodad's in OB. Second best fish tacos in town. Depends on who you ask. 4) Gaglione Bros. Best cheesesteak on the west coast. Imported bread from Philly. Just delicious. 5) Dood's Foods. I saved the best for last. Dive bar type setting in Bankers Hill/Downtown area. Cheap and delicious burgers. Just phenomenal. Seriously, just look at this thing. Damn. That looks really good! Gotta try this place now. Thanks for the tip!

Seriously, does Dood's have more than just sliders?

Lucha Libre is great for surf and turf tacos and they have great breakfast burritos. If going, call in advance and ask for the champion booth. It will be a special occasion and unforgettable experience. Point Loma Seafood is great, but I have Blue Water Seafood ranked higher. It's about 1 block from Lucha Libre. Extraordinary Desserts in Little Italy is a no brainier as one of the best dessert places in our region. More recos coming soon... Just got my confirmation from Lucha Libre that I have the Champs Booth reserved for breakfast on Friday, Feb. 13th. I can't wait! Definitely gonna hit up Blue Water for their fish tacos... despite using flour tortillas... they appear to be among the VERY best in San Diego.

BTW, I can say with a high degree certainty that Blue Water uses corn tortillas. Not sure why the author of the article got flour.

I dont live in SD, but thought I'd weigh in with some of my "go to" places when in town-
El Indio - OK I know I'm going to get shredded for this one, but this one is all about tradition for me. I still think it's pretty darn good, but I know other places that most consider better are even within walking distance, like Lucha Libre. It's just that I've been eating their stuff for 30 years, at Aztec tailgates and other functions. Somehow, my wife and I started going here for a quick lunch as soon as we land and get our rental car. So it's about convenience to the airport, quickness, tradition old and new, and food I still enjoy.
Phil's BBQ - was pleasantly surprised you can get Q this good in SD. Was very impressed. I've been to a great number of the best and/or most renown Q places in the county, this one stands up fairly well. Not the same level as OMG, change your life Q (Oklahoma Joe's in KC), but very, very good. A little secret- the lines are always long just to get in- go into the bar and stand, hover, make nice with a couple tables and see who might be done soon. Worth the wait and effort.
PB Fish Shop -now on my "try to visit" almost every trip to SD. Incredible Fish Tacos, some of the best and highest quality I've ever had. Have read some of the other options mentioned here, maybe they're even better there, but also love the vibe here. TVs all over, chill PB vibe, either tunes or the game audio blasting. Some of my buddies that live/work not too far away hadn't even tried when I mentioned it, it's now high on their list of faves.
Bub's at he ballpark- this will likely be my second criticized option, but hear me out. This is all about wings and tots. These may be the best wings I've ever had, and I LOVE good wings. What's unique about theirs is they smoke them. And they do a great job smoking them. They are so good, they're phenomenal plain even, with no sauces. Their sauces are tremendous too, I'm mostly a buffalo guy, theirs is very authentic and good- just what you want. Many other choices too, tried several others, all good. As a complement, they have tater tots!! which I have re-discovered as an adult- theirs are incredible. You can get them with all kinds of toppings, like nachos. Those are good, but I'm a purist- tots+ salt/seasoning + ranch/ frank's = perfection. If you are downtown, want a casual place with a ton of sports on a ton of TVs, maybe want to also sit outside, and are craving wing, this place is awesome. Lots of young, attractive females too, at least when I was there several rimes during my March Madness trip down this past March.
Haven't tried OB Noodle House, but on my list.

Kettner Exchange is one of the hottest new places in town. But be prepared to feel old as I went there on Saturday night as it was probably 70% girls to 30% guys and pretty much all the women are 22 - 32 years old. So an interesting experience that you feel old when you look around, but also feel young caused by what you're looking at!

Best wings: Twist on University around Florida. Uses real live dead chickens instead of vacuum packed in plastic steroid infused rubber chicken wings drenched in food coloring preservative laden factory made pseudo sauces.
Very crowded, tiny, a little dumpy, with rotten parking and soon to be your new favorite for wings.
Swims against the tide of mediocrity. Homemade wings.
