As of today he would be considered a red shirt . They can remove that at any time and put him on the active squad . Say if JJ , Chol or Spencer get injured , then they could remove his status as red shirt , put him on the active list and play . Right now with the improved play of Allen SF, for Shepard, coaches are having Pope play(who they need to play more) as PF as reserve for JJ- who gets the most PT .so not sure where Zylan gets PT ? We do need to recruit a guy at least 6'9" to play in the middle no matter what you call C , or the 5 . Cage prefers to play PF not C 5 or whatever . He can be like Spencer , M. Thomas . Defender , Rebounder , or I would enjoy it if he even was a guy who was really involved in the offense and scorer . The more the Aztecs use Spencer and Chol that way could help the team recruit a quality C Doesn't Zylan seem more Kawhi like to you? From the video of his play he seems more like a guard to me. Isn't Polee being out a good reason to play Zylan?

I don't see how people keep thinking Cheatham is going to be a 1-3 year player. We haven't even seen him play, and he wasnt even rated all that high by rivals/espn/scout etc. He was toward the back end of the top 100, and there's countless players even in the top 50 each year who don't ever go pro, let alone leave early. To assume he'll leave early is totally foolish IMO. The chances of you guys being disappointed when he steps on the court is extremely high since a lot of you think he's the second coming of Shawn Kemp Look at some other high rated aztecs such as Abukar & Lo Wade. Both much higher rated than Cheatham and they didn't make it but were solid college players PS... I probably shouldn't have said all that since I don't want to de-rail the thread, but I had to say it after reading the previous post You are probably right. Its difficult to find actual game footage of Zylan but the one I found shows he tries to take it exclusively to the bucket. 95% of the youtube stuff of him is Dunk videos and camp invitations against no competition. Yes I have seen a video of him dunking from close to the free throw line but that is just for show. In one tough game in AZ he fouled out at the beginning of the last quarter because of charges so maybe he does not trust a jump shot. He is definitely athletic and has hops but that is alot in High School but you need alot more at the next level.

Here is what ESPN said about Zylan a while back: Strengths: "Long arms, big hands, and D-I athleticism describes this young thoroughbred. He is exceptional in the open court due to his clever handle and slick passing. He has the skill and basketball acumen to get into the lane at will and finish or drop off a pass to an open teammate. His vision is impeccable and his decision making in traffic can be high-level at times.
Weaknesses: Cheatham is a consistent jump shot away from being ranked among the nations elite. He slings his shot and as a result it's quite erratic and inconsistent. In addition, he needs to continue to improve his point guard skills in the half court set. Game management, pick and rolls/pops, and running a team will elevate his stock.
Bottom Line: Cheatham will be a heavily recruited prospect due to his length, skill, and athleticism. His point forward skills are very intriguing."
But maybe he has improved his shot. Who knows.

many people have said Zylan plays similar to Billy White but smaller at 6'7" . Takes the ball to the hoop , needs to work on his short jumper . We will need him to help with rebounding . He is not a top 50 recruit , closer to a top 100 . Would guess he battles with BJ for the PF position in 2015 , then could slide over to SF after he develops his jump shot . Will need a jump shot to play SF in the NBA . If he red shirts this year means he will be rusty to start 2015 . Most likely at least a three year college player. Believe we are trying to get Cage as a PF , so we also need to recruit a quality big the middle C/ 5 position

What person playing the 5 position for the Aztecs has developed into a quality NBA PF ? M Thomas is the closest . Do hope Spencer / Chol get more involved into the offense then just being the ball screen player and we use them more often as a guy attacking the hoop . Do guess Cage will want to play PF and have a decent C/5 and a quality PG on the team he goes to in 2016

Cage seems like a poor mans Big Fundamental to me. That's why I want him. Not a crazed I dunk or want to dunk all the time maniac.

Believe Cage wants to play a PF that faces the basket , that may take it to the basket or shoot a short jumper, similar in style to Billy White . Believe they see Zylan in the same way. As of now I see Spencer our starting 5/C plays a lot with his back to the basket . Chol maybe more of an offensive style player with more moves to the basket and maybe short jumper. I do not know how the coaches will use BJ next year , would help if he starts learning the 5 position along with the 4 . But we lose JJ so Zylan and BJ could share minutes there at PF in 2015. Or they could move Chol to the 4 ?? Various options . But we do need to groom some one for the 5 position. and the 4 .

Best 5 we've had (in at least the past 15 years) is Malcolm Thomas... and he's, what, a SF/PF in the NBA or Europe? For the love of god, stop making a big deal about Cage wanting to be an NBA PF as if it's any conflict with him playing for SDSU. That's utter and complete nonsense on top of being patently false.

What ever you want to call the position . Some taller player needs to be in the middle on D and offense . Cage does not want to play that position as he gets ready for the NBA, he prefers PF . To me our best C / 5 has been M.Thomas . Our development of both Center and PF have not been stellar the last few years . So I do believe Cage will take a look at what the Aztecs have been doing in those categories this year and next . Would guess he may want a decent center to play next to and how we use the 4 and 5 positions . Also a PG that can get the ball down low. Maybe we could say we have not done that well in those areas but see with his addition a change going forward. I hope we can sign him but time to start developing our offense down low .

Exactly how many college teams do you think line up with an NBA-ready Center for Cage Jr. to play off? That's right, basically none. He will play the 5 in college... and in comparing the college game to the NBA game... a collegiate 5 (especially in Fisher's system) is EXACTLY the equivalent to the prototypical NBA 4.
Stan, why do you continue to post this type of nonsense that, essentially, appears as if you are trying to wage an argument that Cage Jr. shouldn't come to SDSU?

He's not big enough for even a 5 in college... most teams don't even have a 5 in college. He'll play a 4 in college no matter where he goes, especially here. Malcolm Thomas was a 4/PF and so was Billy White...That team's only real center was Carlwell and he came off the bench

He could guard 5s, just because you have this idea of how tall centers need to be in the NBA, doesn't mean it is the same in college.

The traditional 2 guard, 2 forward, 1 center set up goes out the window when describing SDSU, especially on the offensive end of the court. The only way Malcolm Thomas could have been described as a center is in the context that he guarded the other teams tallest player, he was much more of a stretch 4 on offense.
With Skylar Spencers limited offensive game, he's primarily delegated to stay in the block which makes him our only real true center since Carlwell, who could still step out and hit a jumper. Because of that, Cage can play PF all he wants if his skill set allows, but he'll still be guarding the other teams biggest guy, whether that be a true C or a more common PF type these days, just based on him being our biggest guy on the court. MJ is all PF in my book, and it sounds like that's where he wants to play.

He shot very few jump shots.

First and foremost I hope the Aztecs can sign Cage . But have also listened to what he has been saying that he prefers to play the 4/PF position . similar to Billy White (PF/4) did as M.Thomas was the 5 . So would guess he wants to be next to another Aztec who is playing the 5/C position , guarding the other team's tallest player . The Aztecs will have BJ . Maybe also another guy that plays in the middle .? Yes not everyone has a true center , but do have some one who wants to play there at 6'8" to 6'10". Some teams do Kentucky, Duke , Arizona , Wisconsin , Virginia , they are doing pretty well . Hope they sign Cage . But it may make it easier if they also have a person who plays in the middle . I am NOT saying they need a 7 ft bulk in the middle but may need to know what Cage is looking for to sign . so he really wants to come here to play.Aztecs may need to involve the guys down low in the offense .

If you think all he did was take the ball to the cup off of low post entry stuff, I'm afraid your mistaken, Malcolm got buckets at the rim, but most were a result of offensive rebounds/run outs/with some low post stuff mixed in. He was the best big we've had in the open court in a long time, and could lead the break/finish the break. Not exactly "Center" behavior in my book. Maybe we just view the position differently, wen I think center I think of somebody like Mohammed Camara who never left the paint and just took up space down low.
