The new ESPN top 60 2016 players came out.. Cage was previous #29 (i think) and now he's #36... not a big move. Also noticed that they list Justin Moore as a 3 star now (previously was a 4 star). Brandon Cyrus is still 4 stars, but not in the super 60. Thornton is a long shot but according to ESPN we have an offer out and he's now the 10th best player and the 2nd best PG overall. Leaf is #15 overall. Vance Jackson who we just offered is #32.. he'd be an incredible addition if we could land him espn.go.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/playerrankings/_/class/2016/order/true

After 2015 season we lose Chol and Spencer .So we have 2 scholarships plus whatever scholarships we do not use for 2015 or if players leave the program for NBA or transfer .

In 2015 we have one chip left with Hemsley and Jones committed. In 2016 we have three scholly's Chol, Spenser and WIII. However, WSIII will most likely leave this year if all goes as planned. WSIII is a wild card, if has has upped his game he is gone. It's his to lose. We have 4 total for 2016 as it stands now.

If XThames can't make it in the NBA, what makes people think WSIII will?

If XThames can't make it in the NBA, what makes people think WSIII will? Different size, skills, positions, and upside.

If XThames can't make it in the NBA, what makes people think WSIII will? Remember all the talk about X going the NBA before last year?? Me neither. Point being, X made a big jump and got drafted. Winston had physical gifts X doesn't...no reason he can't have a breakout year and fulfill his dream of going pro.

He might not make it but he has a better shot than X ever did.

For sure. Winston Shepard has so much natural athleticism, whereas with X it was all effort and heart. In Shepard's case I think too much thinking and trying to look cool/nonchalent hurt his game some. An improvement in his physicality and quitting the finger roll stuff will go miles with his game. Wishing him to have a great season. Myyyy Man! Go Aztecs!

WSIII should be paying close attention to what has happened to JF. If he is NOT right around the All American level this season, then stay in school and continue working his butt off to improve his game. That would give him the best chance to succeed in the NBA, I think.
JF was not ready for the NBA.

Jamaal was also 6'5" with questionable outside shooting skills and not nearly the lockdown defender that Shep has the capability of being. 6'8" guys with length who can defend and have court vision don't grow on trees.

Like JF his shooting can be sometimes rather suspect, I believe. Also like JF his decision making could be improved. JF does also have the ability to defend very well.
Improving those areas of WSIII's game will enable him to rise to the level of an NBA player. He certainly has all of the raw tools needed.

This thread is devolving to OT pretty quickly, but if I may help that right along...
Shep has a much better chance to make it because he has a much better shot at getting a guaranteed first round contract - something X and JF didn't get. Had it not been for the guaranteed money in JF's rookie contract (verrrry rare for a second rounder), I think the Grizz would have cut ties a lot sooner than they did.
Shep will get his chance in the NBA based on talent alone. How he plays this year will go far in determining how big a chance that will be.
And lay off the kid about "attitude". It is the most insulting thing ever - to assume that you can decipher through body language what would take his game to some new, magical level. Everyone has a personality while playing sports and just because it rubs some the wrong way doesn't mean he should change (and that coming from someone who hated JF's demeanor).

So recruiting wise maybe better for the Aztecs to hold onto their #13 scholarship for 2015 , to see what position or player is needed . Plus the opportunities for 2016

Shepard had serious attitude issues during his Freshman Year...and realized it, worked hard and came back for his Sophomore year a much different person/player. I really suspect he will make another huge leap in overall play and leadership. As much talent as SDSU has this season, the difference between a good and great season rest on Shepard's shoulders.

Should be interesting seeing how the 2014 - 15 squad performs and what the team is looking for 2015 as transfer ? or holds onto for 2016 options > As for Shepard , he has a wide variety of talent , would be great if Zabo / Williams can handle PG . The 3 or 4 guys can take care of the PF/C position . So Shepard can just relax and play his game at SG or SF as needed , do not need him thinking he needs to carry the team but do what he can do to the max for the team . This team could go 10 deep with a lot of guys making contributions on both ends of the court . Share the ball and the team will do well .

WSIII got a reality check at the end of last season. He hit 7 of 51 shots in the last 5 games MWC conf + NCAA MM and averaged about 22 minutes per game in his last 7 starts. He stunk up the end of the year and X carried the team. HE needs to get his head right and kill it this year. Wait a minute is this a WIII thread or Michael Cage Jr post?
